Here’s one great reason to go to the Ottawa Folk Festival:
You can meet members of the bands you love! I managed to catch up with Joey Burns after Calexico‘s jaw-dropping jam session with The Acorn, Tanya Tagaq, Namgar, and Kim Beggs during the “A Place Called Home” workshop on Saturday, August 14. I was able to ask a few quick questions about how he was enjoying the festival and details on Calexico’s upcoming tour!
On Friday, August 13, 2010, as the sun went down, The Acorn took to the stage at the Ottawa Folk Festival.
That liminal time between day and night seemed a fitting hour, considering The Acorn’s most
recent release, No Ghost, and the nature of the band itself: filled with dichotomies, opposition, and transformation. continue reading…
Photos from Frank Turner‘s set on the second day of the Ottawa Folk Festival.
He played at the Dance tent and it was a wonderful set.
He made a surprise for a long-time volunteer of the festival and played a song with him on stage.
I got a chance to speak with Frank on the last day of the festival. NOTE: It was raining that day so it might be hard to listen this interview, also there is a part in the interview where you hear the sounds of thunder.
That was when Frank’s manager makes a monster of an entrance. Listen to the interview.

Photos from Aidan Knight‘s set on the second day of the Ottawa Folk Festival.
He played a longer set on Saturday and he was truly amazing to see and hear live.
Emily McQuarrie got a chance to speak with Aidan on the first night of the festival. Listen to interview 2.0.

The second last day of Ottawa Bluesfest.
It was a rock and country theme on Saturday, July 17th.
I was wondering if Nicole Kidman was around with Keith Urban??
The acts I saw were:
Nice to see that the Born Ruffians are becoming more popular these days – they totally filled Mavericks!
The majority of the people that attended were female, I guess ratio wise it was guys 30, girls 70.
I didn’t really expect the crowd to go insane, and they didn’t. It was pretty tame in comparison to the crowd last Saturday at NXNE. continue reading…
The lovely and talent Gianna Lauren stopped by Canteen for the “season finale” of Bands Undone.
She was accompanied by and touring with Field Assembly (aka Adam Fox).
At first I thought it was “Field Music” who I saw awhile ago opening up for Plants & Animals but it was someone else.
But it was totally a different musician.
Through telling Gianna in person a few months ago, I told her to try contact Kara and she did.
Gianna and Adam played a wonderful song set.
My favorite was Gianna and Adam playing the glockenspiel.
Both their vocals melded right together.
Listen to the interview Emily McQuarrie did with Gianna and Adam of Field Assembly.

If you want to know what Gianna Lauren sounds, listen to “Sorry I Couldn’t Be There” from the album “Fist In A Heart”. Which is my favorite song.

If you want to know what Field Assembly sounds, listen to “Don’t Go Running” from “Broadsides and Ephemera”.

Guess that is it for the end of season one for Bands Undone.
More to come in the fall time.
Despite it being a choatic May 29th, 2010 what with the Great Glebe Garage Sale and the Ottawa Marathon, Bands Undone braved the insanity and hosted two fine musicians at Canteen. Erin Lang and David Simard took a bit of extra time to do this great Bands Undone session.

Connor Mercury is a Ottawa singer/songwriter.
He dropped by Bands Undone at Canteen on May 17, 2010
A very talented musician when I saw him play outside Canteen.
It was so nice out that it was the first time it was outside.
Here are the photos.
Listen to the audio interview I did with Connor.
