Now Playing Radio’s Sub-Basement Sessions

Sub-Basement Sessions Cover Art
Now Playing Radio is a show on Wednesday at 1pm, I listen to on CHUO 98.1 in Ottawa.
Right now they are on week 2 of their Funding Drive.
Which ends on May 13th.
They just released this five track compilation with the likes of Phantom Shores (Ottawa), Woodpigeon and The Mountains and the Trees.
Really amazing live acoustic tracks at the CHUO FM studios.

Check out two of my favorite tracks from Woodpigeon and The Mountains and The Trees

For more info on the tracks, go to Now Playing Radio’s Bandcamp page.

Here is another installment of the best of 2010: Canadian albums.
This time its from #51-#60.
This section I had trouble listing since I had extended from 50 to 75.
What is surprising is that only one album in the list which I actually did a review on the album.
Overall these albums were still great to listen to.
Now you have to wait for the last week of December to find out the Top 50 Canadian albums of 2010.
Let’s the guessing and waiting begin.
Check out the list.

Running up & down Dekcuf/Mavericks: part V

After OCFF, I headed up to Cafe Dekcuf.
Hoping to see Yukon Blonde, found out that couldn’t make it because something happened to their drummer.
In last replacement, Leif Vollebekk played their set.

Its always great to see him play live as always.
The only thing missing was his violin.
Great set as always.

Next up was The Gallop.
A Ottawa band that has members of Brights and The Ethics.
Very surprised with the turnout, more like friends of the band showed their support for them.
Their music was rocking fun. Some of their music had instrumentals and some had singing.
People you should check them out.

After them was The Polytones.
Haven’t seen them play in awhile mostly because Ben Wilson has been doing his other band That’s The Spirit.
Always a fun poppy set and always bring out the fun out of a show.

Lastly, Woodpigeon played.
I was hoping for a band set I saw at NXNE.
It was mostly Mark and another member with Catriona Sturton doing harmonica.

Glad I stayed for most of their set and see Catriona play with Woodpigeon.
I liked the intimate acoustic set they did. Not sure if he was previewing new material for the upcoming album Die Stadt Muzikanten.
It was an amazing lovely set.
Hope they come back to Ottawa with a full band.
They are a band that you have to see live.

While that was happening, I went down to Mavericks to see who was playing.
They were:

It was a folk rock night happening down at Mavericks
I’ve see Winchester Warm various times, I alwasy like to called them Poorfolk -2 or acoustic Poorfolk.

My prediction on the Polaris Prize Shortlist

I haven’t been focusing on the Polaris Music Prize

I might be wrong on the prediction.
Jill Barber – Chances
Bell Orchestre – As Seen Through Windows
Bruce Peninsula – A Mountain Is A Mouth

Elliott Brood – Mountain Meadows
Timber Timbre – Timber Timbre
Chad VanGaalen – Soft Airplane
Martha Wainwright – I Know You’re Married But I’ve Got Feelings Too
Women – Women
Woodpigeon – Treasury Library Canada C/W Houndstooth Europa

If you don’t like my prediction, why don’t make a comment on who should be on the shortlist.

NXNE: Day 4

My last night in Toronto for NXNE.
I decided to hit up The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern.
Playing there were:

During the times I missed Jason Collett and Hot Panda, I went to the Reverb.
Playing there were:
