da nang – IYKYK: A Cathartic, Chaotic Indie Rock Breakup Anthem

Recently, Ontario (Toronto?) indie rock trio da nang dropped their new single, IYKYK.
This is a moody, fast-paced emo rock tune that sounds like a queer rock version of PUP — full of raw emotion, catchy gang vocals, and just the right amount of chaos.

“IYKYK” is a fast, cathartic, and deliberately unserious breakup anthem inspired by lead singer John being ghosted after a seven-year relationship.
The band affectionately describes it as a “sea shanty for the heartbroken,” and that description actually fits.
It takes frustration, petty rage, and heartbreak and turns it into something you can scream along to with your friends.
The song came together during a writing trip to Picard Lake in the Kawarthas, north of Toronto, shortly after the breakup.
Instead of turning the experience into a serious meditation on lost love, da nang decided to turn it into what they call a “polite middle finger,” writing the entire song over one chaotic day.
The title itself is an inside joke of sorts.
When the relationship drama first surfaced, it played out like a live-blogged soap opera across social media, with seemingly everyone getting a front-row seat.
When things fell apart again, John took the complete opposite approach. He told almost no one, stayed off the proverbial timeline, and quietly started rebuilding himself.
If you know, you know. And if you did? Congratulations on making the inner circle.
That mixture of genuine hurt and exaggerated irreverence is what makes “IYKYK” so much fun. Rather than searching for closure or trying to make sense of seven years together, da nang finds catharsis in being a little petty about the whole thing. Sometimes you don’t need closure — you just need to turn the volume up and say the things you probably shouldn’t send to your ex.
Musically, da nang aimed for what they call “unfiltered chaos with a beat.” High-octane indie rock and emo collide with the communal energy of a jaunty sea shanty, complete with full-throated gang vocals that practically beg to be shouted back over a pint of cheap beer — or a few tears.
There is something wonderfully messy and immediate about “IYKYK.” It captures that weird space where heartbreak, anger, humour, and friendship all collide. It’s emotional without taking itself too seriously, and the gang vocals make it feel like the kind of song that could become a live favourite.
da nang have taken a painful breakup and turned it into a loud, funny, and cathartic indie rock anthem. If you need a song to scream along to after a bad breakup, “IYKYK” is definitely one to add to the playlist.
