I hadn’t been to a show at Gabba Hey! at Ottawa’s City Centre in quite a long time, so it was great to finally make my way back for a night of local music.
This was also the reason I had to skip The Halluci Nation at Soundscape Ottawa, but getting back to Gabba Hey! made for a pretty good alternative.
The layout of Gabba Hey! has changed somewhat since the last time I was there, but it still has that familiar feel when a show gets underway.
Things were starting somewhat late, but at least I didn’t miss the first band of the night.
Opening the show was Double Judy, featuring members of Bonnie Doon and Matt Miwa on vocals.
They delivered a great post-punk rocking set that got the night moving in the right direction and it was Matt’s birthday too.

Next up was D.Druff, the new project from a member of Slow Dawn.
Their set leaned into moody, loud psych-punk, bringing a heavier and darker energy to the room.

The Retrospects were up next and, as always, they never disappoint.
Their fun indie synthpop sound came from a mix of material from their self-titled album and Vaporwaves.
They brought plenty of energy and catchy moments to their set, making them another highlight of the night.

Ending the night was Jim’s Plumbing and Electrical with a raucous indie-rocking set.
They were the perfect band to close out the evening, bringing the night to a loud and energetic finish.

Overall, I had a wonderful time back at Gabba Hey! It was great to see the venue hosting another night of Ottawa’s local music scene, and I hope they continue to do more shows like this.
