Official Polaris Prize Shortlist

Here is the official shortlist nominees for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize.
Elliott Brood – Mountain Meadows
F*cked Up – Chemistry of Common Life
Great Lake Swimmers – Lost Channels
Hey Rosetta! – Into Your Lungs
K’naan – Troubador
Malajube – Labrinths
Metric – Fantasies
Joel Plaskett – Three
Chad Vangaalen – Soft Airplane
Patrick Watson – Wooden Arms

Apparently my prediction was way off and only two that I chose made it in the official shortlist.
My guess on who is going to win will be either in percentage form:
Metric 60%
K’naan 65%
Joel Plaskett 70%
Great Lake Swimmers 75%
Malajube 80%
F*cked Up 85%
Elliott Brood 90%
Chad VanGaalen 95%

Overall I am kind of not impress with the Shortlist.
Because everyone minus F*cked Up, Great Lake Swimmers (?), Hey Rosetta! and Elliot Brood are repeat nominees.
Wasn’t Polaris Prize suppose to find out new or recognize lesser known Canadian acts?
Half of the nominees are already established in their own ways with their success and fans.
We just have to wait until September 21st for the winner.

Let the debating begin.

  1. François

I’m quite disappointed in the selection, especially considering that this is not the best work of some on this list(Malajube, K’naan…even Metric). Even if they are still good albums.

Too bad there is no: Bruce Peninsula, Handsome Furs or Coeur de Pirate.

  2. Alicia

Actually K’naan is a repeat nominee, too. He was nominated for Dusty Foot Philosopher in 2006.

  3. Robert Brockie

The Polaris Prize isn’t about recognizing new or up and coming artists. The award is given to the best full-length Canadian album based on artistic merit, regardless of genre, sales, or record label.

Previous winners Final Fantasy and Patrick Watson where not truly “new”artists when they won either. Both had quite a big fan base already (similar to the artists on the current list).
