The Toronto music scene works in crazy and closely knit ways.
This is the case for Shawn Clarke.
It’s one of those blink and you miss kind of things when you see a musician/band live at shows.
Looking through the photos that I’ve taken, I was surprised to capture Shawn in other bands he sometimes or used to play.
So why not check out what his music.
Shawn Clarke is a folk singer/songwriter from Toronto.
He previously played in bands like Olenka and the Autumn Lovers (Yay! Love them!) and Timber Timbre (Ugh! Really! LOL :P).
Like Birds Too Tired To Fly is 11 tracks of great indie folk pop tunes.
It is like listening to Iron & Wine or some famous Canadian folk singer who I can’t think on the top of my head.
Or I can say he is like the male version of Olenka and the Autumn Lovers/Ohibijou/Forest City Loves/Basia Bulat.
The album begins with a country twangy of Empty House.
Song For Kathleen is a very mellow intimate track and has that Ohbijou/Forest City Lovers feel with the violin.
Wow I was like no way he used the F-Bombs on the angry post break-up song Hurt Before.
It nice that Olenka and Wilderness of Manitoba helped out on the album.
Considering the album has been out since 2010, it does have a start of the fall kind of album.
Overall it is a great album filled with great lyric, melodies and of course the music.
- Empty House
- Song for Kathleen
- Sick Song
- Hurt Before
- I’ll Miss You When You’re Gone
- Secret Bear
- Requiem for 33 Yale
I’d give Like Birds Too Tired To Fly 9/10.
Don’t forget that Shawn Clarke will be playing Ottawa on September 14th at Umi Cafe. (Same night as Cousins at Raw Sugar Cafe).
I suggest try going to both since Shawn’s set will be very early and Cousins won’t play at around 10pm.
