Data Romance – Other [Review]

Around 2012, I was surprised to hear that Dine Alone Records signed (?) Vancouver’s Data Romance.
Is this Dine Alone Record‘s first electro-pop dance act in their roster!??
Anyways, I’ve been a big fan of Data Romance since I first saw them two years ago.
They only released two EPs.
Very eager that their first debut full-length album “Other” dropped on February 19th (The day before my birthday! :P)
Definitely the wait was worth it!
If you aren’t familiar with Data Romance they are a duo consisting of:

  • Ajay Bhattacharyya
  • Amy Kirkpatrick

Other is twelve tracks of hypnotizing luscious electro-pop album!
Ajay is at time brilliant on the electro-synth sounds.
Amy’s vocals is at times haunting (Caves, Others, mysterious (Cargo,) dark (Something to Me), brilliant (Can’t Keep Your Mind Off) and full of emotions.

Parts on the album has that slow dark electro-mellow brooding feel on Caves, Others and Finish Round.
While you have tracks to that you can sort of dance to on Can’t Keep You Mind Off, They, Guard and She’s Been High.
Best tracks:

  • Caves

  • Others
  • Can’t Keep Your Mind Off

  • They
  • Only A Few
  • Guard
  • She’s Been High

  • Finish Round

They may not have the big buzz and push from the likes of AlunaGeorge and Purity Ring when it comes to electro-pop male-female duos.
But sure is a start for those curious and like dark electro-pop dance music.
Overall I totally dig Other!
I’d give Other 10/10.
RIYL: AlunaGeorge, The xx, Digits, Massive Attack and Purity Ring.
