SUMMARY:Shazamfest 2022
DESCRIPTION:ShazamFest’s musical lineup includes the likes of Toronto’s devilishly good fusion legends the Shuffle Demons; the quirky compositions of Canada’s Zappa-esque mad genius Friendly Rich; the Acadian country folk vibes\, served with a twist hyper-pop glam\, of New Brunswick sensation P’tit Belliveau; the 514 femme-forward hip-hop musings of Fidès; the swingin’ rockabilly stylings of Sherbrooke’s groovy good-time kings Sloe Gin Fizz; and the intoxicating old time ragtime wanderings of Montreal’s Homebrew Remedy — among many more. \nNot to be outdone\, dance-seeking festivalgoers will surely delight at this year’s lineup of talent on the ones and twos. Battle-tested since 2005\, DJ Risa’s globetrotting style incorporates everything from reggae and dubstep to nu cumbia and post-trap. Fancy something a bit more exotic? Something a bit more indebted to global trance fit to bliss out to? DJ Prana Papa has you covered. And how could we neglect to mention the peace\, unity\, and mindfulness both represented and exemplified by the Worldwild Soundsystem — whose very presence all but ensures the vibes will be immaculate for the party people in the place to be. \n“Part of the festival’s mandate is to support local/regional art and communities\,” says Ziv. “Fifty percent of the acts are from the area\, the Eastern Townships. People are going back to shows\, and we want them to know that they can buy a ticket to a major international artist coming to town\, or they can come to ShazamFest for not just one local act\, but a whole slew of them!” \nFor the complete ShazamFest 2022 lineup\, click here. \n⚡ NOT TO BE OUTDONE ⚡\nAs usual\, music isn’t the only thing on offer at ShazamFest\, as the festival’s neo-vaudeville cabaret of all-encompassing entertainment once again brings forth talents including but not limited to the big-hearted world-travelling love & laughter merchants of Clowns Without Borders\, the physical/intellectual hybrid circus artistry of LaboKracBoom\, the daring and revolution-tinged multidisciplinary carnival stylings of Carmagnole\, and the irresistibly exotic rhythmic bliss of the Tribal Roses dancers. The complete list of performing artists is available here and of workshops here. \nGot a beard\, a moustache\, or a mullet you’re especially proud of and want to show off? You’re in luck\, because there’s a competition just for you with trophies and prizes awarded to those whose hairs are deemed to be most fair\, including the ultimate crowd-pleaser Best Fake Beard category for children and adults of all genders and ages! And\, for fans of the proud Canadian tradition of heroes\, heels\, and gravity-defying leaps off the top rope\, wrestling will make its return to ShazamFest this summer\, with the beloved local grapplers of L’Académie de lutte estrienne set to piledrive and bodyslam their way into your hearts. \n⚡ FUN FOR THE FULL SHAZAMFAM ⚡\nThe festival’s KidzZone component is back by popular demand to spread the ShazamFest magic to all ages and keep the little ones entertained! A unique space devised for children is set to dazzle once again with a weekend-long program made up of age-specific performances\, workshops\, activities and a talent show! \nKidzZone also offers 3 daily meals + snacks throughout the entire run of the festival for a modest $25 per child\, with discounts offered for multiple children — in addition to free unlimited spring water tapped right at the source\, free festival access for children under the age of 13 and free camping! Find out more about KidzZone services & programming here. \n⚡ KEEPIN’ IT REAL\, REAL GREEN ⚡\nShazamFest’s commitment to environmental and ecological responsibility is a defining feature of the festival\, and has been since its very beginning. In 2019\, the last pre-pandemic edition of the festival\, 2000 attendees produced a mere 12 bags of trash over 4 days — a far cry from the unconscionable amount of waste generated at mainstream gatherings. \nAs in previous years\, the ShazamFest team discourages festivalgoers from bringing single-use plastics onsite. The festival will have stainless-steel travel mugs readily available upon arrival\, as well as reusable dishware and cutlery\, compostable cups\, and unlimited free spring water tapped at the source. All of the stages and structures are hand-built with recycled or reclaimed materials found on the site\, and the annual post-festival garbage sorting party is back as well with free drinks and meals for anyone wanting to lend a hand! \n⚡ A TRUE CELEBRATION OF ARTS & CULTURE ⚡\n“In a way\, ShazamFest is the antithesis of corporate festivals\, the anti-Coachella\,” states Ziv. “Here\, you won’t see advertisements onsite. You don’t feel like you’re at a big commercial event because you’re not. I’m an artist at heart\, and that’s the spirit behind the festival.” \nShazamFest is a festival for artists\, a place where even the misfits fit in and where those in need of an affordable break from everyday life can seize the opportunity to both find and build community. “It’s a party\,” says Ziv\, “but it’s also so much more than just a party.”

SUMMARY:OMBIIGIZI\, frown line\, Kosmavermo @ Club Saw
DESCRIPTION:OMBIIGIZI – Sewn Back Together Tour\nSewn Back Together by OMBIIGIZI\nwith special guests\nfrown line (ottawa indie pop)\nSeptember by frown line\nKosmavermo (ottawa instrumental/post-rock)\nLockdown Sessions (Side A) by Kosmavermo\nlicensed 19+ – 8pm doors\ntickets available here https://bit.ly/3dSHfei and Vertigo Records \npresented with the support of Ontario Creates and FACTOR \nOMBIIGIZI – pronounced om-BEE-ga-ZAY\, meaning s/he is noisy – is a collaboration between Zoon (Daniel Monkman) and Status/Non-Status (Adam Sturgeon)\, Anishnaabe artists who explore their cultural histories through sound. An amalgam of their unique Indigenous heritages and personal musical architectures\, Daniel and Adam imbue their lyrics with their families’ storytelling\, revealing truths and finding common ground amidst their differences. Introduced today with the first single “Residential Military\,” the debut album Sewn Back Together is a fusion of individuality – a reflection on Adam and Daniel’s commitment to each other as collaborators and distinct members of community.\n\nPutting aside the tonal nuances of their previous work as Zoon and Status/Non-Status (formerly known as WHOOP-Szo)\, OMBIIGIZI strips back the waves of distortion to reveal themselves\, their voices\, writing and improvising for the sake of the song. The family on Sewn Back Together includes the production duo of Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene and Nyles Spencer of The Bathouse Studio. Recorded there in fast and intentional sessions during the summer of 2021\, Drew and Spencer – along with musicians Eric Lourenço and Drew McLeod from Status/Non-Status and Zoon\, respectively – helped steer this collision of divergent artists into some glorious sonic territory steeped in shoegaze\, dream pop\, anthemic rock\, Chicago post-rock\, and 2nd wave emo. While not always getting to play and perform alongside other members of their community\, OMBIIGIZI is a coming together – with Sewn Back Together\, a resounding statement shaped by healing and the guidance of culture.

SUMMARY:Joel Plaskett @ NAC Theatre
DESCRIPTION:In a world increasingly defined by disconnection under the guise of digital bonding\, Joel Plaskett is an analogue holdout\, making his most solid connections the old-fashioned way\, through the electrifying\, uplifting experience of his live shows. The warmth and care with which he works shines through on his albums\, self-produced and recorded to tape at his New Scotland Yard studio in downtown Dartmouth. But there’s no better spot than under the bright lights of the stage to catch one of Nova Scotia’s favourite sons\, shredding in reverie alongside his band\, The Emergency\, harmonizing with his dad\, Bill or spinning tales and songs on his own. \nSetting his impressive catalogue aside\, Plaskett’s legacy is in those communal experiences\, the ones that have fans old and new belting out his songs for a couple hours before they stumble wide-eyed onto the sidewalk outside the club\, buzzing with the life-affirming electricity that gets generated between the stage and the audience.

SUMMARY:Edwin Raphael @ Club Saw
DESCRIPTION:Dubai-born\, Montreal-based songwriter Edwin Raphael will be stopping by Ottawa’s Club Saw on May 12\, 2022.\n\nHow do you anchor yourself when occupying multiple geographic identities at once? For Edwin Raphael\, it requires an intentional and intensive form of world-building. By developing an unmistakable style of folk that merges Eastern scales with the Western pop canon\, Raphael reimagines his music as a exploratory tool that allows him to construct an interior and sacred home to retreat into.\n \nGrowing up in Dubai\, as the son of parents who immigrated from the city of Cochin in India’s coastal Kerala state\, Raphael studied classical guitar before deciding on the keys. As he developed an affinity for John Mayer and Ben Howard\, he felt at odds with Dubai’s distinct sense of “placelessness” — and the bewildering feeling of being immersed in a culture where everyone claimed an alternate homeland. It wasn’t until he moved to Montreal to pursue a business degree that he felt a sense of stability\, and became deeply entangled with the city’s indie bedroom pop scene. \n\nHis debut EP Ocean’s Walk (2015) paired stirring\, melancholic instrumentals with a fierce self-reckoning. It would set the stage for a string of releases that would dive deeper into the psyche; like confronting the aftershocks following a significant heartbreak\, or relearning your emotional baseline as you mature. Subsequent releases\, Cold Nights (2017)\, his acclaimed debut Will You Think of Me Later? (2019)\, and its follow up Staring at Ceilings (2021) on

This selection of paintings showcases the stylistic breadth of his intuitive\, experimental and process-based approach to visual art\, leading to unexpected interplays of colour\, line and space that invite the viewer to see anew. The exhibition opens on May 12\, 2022 at Alliance Française Ottawa with a reception attended by the artist. \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nView this post on Instagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nA post shared by Jose Palacios (@opencloseddoors) \n\n\n\nInformed by his experiences as a musician and DJ\, Palacios approaches painting in a way that is similar to how ideas come together when he makes music: layering and sampling ideas\, looping phrases and repeating patterns until all the different parts reveal a finished whole. Palacios uses a variety of media – acrylic\, oil sticks\, watercolour\, and spray paint – to enrich\, layer\, and interrupt surfaces with multiple textures\, creating curious contrasts and tensions within a single work. \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nView this post on Instagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nA post shared by Jose Palacios (@opencloseddoors) \n\n\n\nWhere locatedness is loosened through a playful tension of differently weighted focal points – as in Analogous\, where the fluid verticality of intentionally-placed lines contrast with heavier\, constrained blocks – the paintings seem to contain circuits of energy that follow a complex internal logic. Other works\, like In Your First House and In Praise of Melancholy\, draw upon electric and calming colour palettes to channel a spontaneous and uncontainable force driven by an intuitive impulse that leaps off the canvas. When Palacios’ works include figurative elements\, as in Death of a Party\, they tend to emerge in a dream-like way\, entangled with bursts of colour\, textures\, and layers.\nEnlivening and evocative\, the paintings in We Can Start Over Again are a delight for the eyes\, rousing curiosity and offering the possibility to look again at what and how we see.\nThey evidence a raw vibrancy at the root of Palacios’ creative momentum that continues to propel his work forward in new and exciting directions. \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nView this post on Instagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nA post shared by Jose Palacios (@opencloseddoors) \n\n\n\nJose Palacios (b. 1978\, Lima\, Peru) is a visual artist\, musician\, and DJ who works and lives in Ottawa\, Ontario. His paintings\, which include both digital works and those on canvas and paper\, have been shown in exhibitions at Galerie Annexe at the Ottawa Art Gallery\, and the Ottawa City Hall Art Gallery.\nJose Palacios acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts\, City of Ottawa and Digital Originals.
