SUMMARY:Shaya Ishaq. Library of Infinities [Opening] @ Club Saw
DESCRIPTION:OPENING RECEPTION FOR SHAYA ISHAQ. LIBRARY OF INFINITIES.\nFriday\, August 6\, 5PM-midnight\nSAW outdoor courtyard (67 Nicholas Street\, Ottawa)\nMusic with DJ JFUN\nFood prepared by Chloé Berlanga\nFree admission and cash bar\nThe exhibition Shaya Ishaq. Library of Infinities is an attempt at a collective envisioning of the liberation of the imagination through literature\, solidarity and the narratives of resilience woven through Black diasporic communities across Turtle Island and beyond. From August 6 to October 30\, 2021\, SAW’s exhibition spaces will transform into a crowdsourced library of books and listening material that will be available for visitors to explore. Community leaders\, artists\, writers\, activists and teachers in Halifax\, where the project began and was first presented at the Khyber Centre for the Arts under the title Black Libraries Matter\, have contributed book titles to the project\, with more titles to be added during the exhibition at SAW. Library of Infinities will feature architectural shelving and modular seating in an immersive environment designed by the artist\, and will include a participative website and events to be held throughout the summer and fall such as community-led reading and listening groups\, film screenings and art-making workshops co-facilitated with local Black artists. By activating a space that highlights the multiplicity of Black voices on this land\, the artist has created a portal of resources and stories that can empower and open minds\, one that does not boast of a monolithic understanding of Black people but holds space for a boundless constellation of interrelations.

SUMMARY:Vernissage : Marisa Gallemit\, Claudia Gutierrez & Guillermo Trejo - Manila-Acapulco
DESCRIPTION:MARISA GALLEMIT\, CLAUDIA GUTIERREZ and GUILLERMO TREJO\nManila-Acapulco\nJuly 22 to October 3\, 2021\nOPENING\nThursday\, July 22\, 5:30 to 7:30 pm\nARTISTS TOURS\nSunday\, September 12 at 2 pm and 3 pm\nFree admission. Presented in English.\nEvent protocol\n– Masks required\n– Sanitizer stations available\n– Staff on site to greet visitors\n– Limited number of people permitted in gallery at one time\nPlease check the latest Ottawa Public Health safety guidelines prior to your visit: \n \nEXHIBITION BOOKLET: https://tinyurl.com/5b97ehd5\nThe Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade Route was officially established in 1565. Spanish navigators had been charged with finding a route from the Philippines\, an island region claimed by Spain some forty years earlier\, to Mexico\, which had been conquered in 1521. The new trade route remained active until 1815\, extending the umbilical cord between Spain and its colonies by tethering the Asian archipelago to American channels of commerce and communication.\nThis exhibition invokes this historical juncture – a particularly poignant period when the artists’ countries of origin converged – while also proposing an alternative fold in the fabric of the surrounding narrative. Rather than evoking a linear course plotted between two disparate points\, the exhibition triangulates Marisa Gallemit\, Claudia Gutierrez and Guillermo Trejo\, creating a trine in which two entities are relied upon to locate the third. Individually\, each employ process-based techniques that at once interpret their ancestral lineage and conceive of new understandings of it within the present. Plaited together\, the three artists reshape traditional material hierarchies\, redirect flows of information and remake ancient objects as a way of reorienting towards the future.\n– Exhibition booklet excerpt by Rhiannon Vogl\nBIOGRAPHIES\nMARISA GALLEMIT has been exhibiting her work in Ontario and Quebec since 2010 and will be contributing to the Parkette Projects as part of Toronto’s Year of Public Art in late 2021. She has been awarded a SAW Prize for New Works\, a City of Ottawa Creation and Production grant and has received the Critics’ Choice Award from the Ottawa Art Gallery in 2019 and 2020. http://marisagallemit.com/ \nMarisa Gallemit gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the City of Ottawa\, the Ontario Arts Council and Galerie SAW Gallery.\nCurrently working as a curator and arts administrator\, CLAUDIA GUTIERREZ is an artist and activist whose practice has been deeply informed by residencies in Canada and Mexico. She has been exhibiting her work in Ontario since 2010 and has completed numerous public art and cultural outreach projects in Ottawa. She was awarded the SAW Prize for New Works in 2020. http://claudiagutierrezart.com/\nClaudia Gutierrez gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Ontario Arts Council and Galerie SAW Gallery.\nGUILLERMO TREJO has been exhibiting his work for over a decade in Canada\, the United States\, Europe and Mexico. He has worked as an arts researcher at the National Gallery of Canada and as an instructor at the Ottawa School of Art. https://trejoguillermo.com/\nHe is a past recipient of a City of Ottawa Emerging Artist Grant and a Young Artist Award from Mexico’s National Fund for Culture and Arts (FONCA). DESCRIPTION:Peel Dream Magazine (NYC dream-rock)\n\nFounded by New York City-based musician Joe Stevens in 2017\, Peel Dream Magazine released their debut album\, Modern Meta Physic\, on the much loved and venerable American independent label Slumberland Records the following year\, 2018.\n\nDriven by a DIY aesthetic and initially very much a ‘home recording project’\, their debut recalled the likes of Yo La Tengo and Unrest and harkened back to the early 1990s\, when The Velvet Underground resurged as an inspiration to a new set of bands wielding synthesizers and off-set guitars. \nAcapulco Gold (T.O. dreamy folk)\n\n“Mellow ballad machine” – Exclaim! \nFire Antlers (Ottawa synth-rock)\n\nFire Antlers melds twangy pop with primitive electronic beats and glittery synth waves\, painting absurd sketches that jump abruptly from sarcastic to heartfelt. \n——————————————-\nShow Details: \nSaturday\, February 1st\nCinqhole (5b Fairmont Ave.)\n8 PM / $10 / All Ages\nCheck out the photos.\n\nPeel Dream Magazine\, Acapulco Gold and Fire Antlers at Cinqhole30 photos

SUMMARY:Chilly Gonzales @ NAC Southam Hall
DESCRIPTION:Chilly Gonzales\, Grammy-winning Canadian pianist and entertainer currently living in Europe\, is known as much for the intimate piano touch of best-selling albums Solo Piano I and Solo Piano II as for his showmanship and composition for award-winning stars. Gonzo\, as he is known to close collaborators\, aims to be a man of his time\, approaching the piano with classical and jazz training but with the attitude of a rapper. \nChilly Gonzales holds the Guinness world record for the longest solo concert at over 27 hours. He performs and writes songs with Jarvis Cocker\, Feist and Drake\, among others. With Never Stop\, Chilly Gonzales composed a global hit for the inaugural Apple iPad 2 campaign. In 2014 he won a Grammy for his collaboration on Daft Punk’s Best Album of the Year and composed the best-selling book of easy piano pieces Re-Introduction Etudes. With his last album Chambers\, Chilly Gonzales devoted himself to finding a modern take on chamber music. \n2020 sees the return of Chilly Gonzales to the NAC stage with an intimate hour of pieces from the Solo Piano album cycle\, after which he is joined by Stella Le Page on cello and Joe Flory on drums to perform hits and hidden surprises from the rest of his repertoire\, interspersed with his unique playful explanations about how music works. \nPhotos from October 22\, 2018 concert.

SUMMARY:Nick Schofield: Ambient Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Nick Schofield is a musician\, producer and radio host with a BFA in Electroacoustic Studies. In 2018\, Schofield released his debut solo album Water Sine with Backward music\, described by Paste Magazine as “soothing and pellucid\, meditative and transportive.” Continuing the tradition of ‘environmental music’\, Water Sine is an offering of softness and simplicity\, a sound that beckons for tranquility and release. In concert\, Schofield has performed at the Getty Center in Los Angeles\, NYC’s National Sawdust and MUTEK Montreal\, previously opening for acclaimed artists Sarah Davachi\, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith\, Colin Stetson\, and Hauschka. \nThis concert will feature Nick Schofield (synthesizer) performing alongside Yolande Laroche (clarinet) and Philippe Charboneau (bass) as ‘The Ambient Ensemble’. The first half of the concert will be a live presentation of Schofield’s album ‘Water Sine’\, followed by the performance of a new work in the second half.
