SUMMARY:Andrew Beck - The Onlookers @ Studio Sixty Six
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Beck – The Onlookers\nOpening Reception: Friday\, November 1st\, 2019\, 6pm-9pm\nShow Runs: November 1 – November 17\n\nTHE ONLOOKERS\nThe works of Andrew Beck seem to show snapshots of romantic tone that locate themselves in a dystopic and bygone era. His work evokes uncertainty — which may be the fruit of his arrangement of people and objects\, often in contradiction of the laws of physics\, but may equally reflect the viewer’s sense that some fascinating and unheard-of event is unfolding just beyond the pictorial surface. Beck inserts disquieting elements into the familiar and unthreatening. People and objects seem to merge or to partially disappear from the space — both tending to alienate the viewer from the usual assumptions of naturalistic representation. Is the work reality\, a dream\, or the pure inner world of the artist? There is no answer. The best the viewer can do is to muster his own imagination and narrative arc to interpret\, and thereby unify\, the picture. In this way\, the viewer merges with the work\, becomes\, in a significant way\, part of it. This completion of the picture comes only through what the viewer and his or her consciousness imports \nARTIST STATEMENT\n“My recent paintings invite the viewer to be an onlooker\, a witness to lost moments and half remembered dreams. Like\nbeginning a movie part way through\, we’re unsure of what’s happened and must watch and wait to see how events unfold\nbefore trying to piece together the full story for ourselves.” A. BECK \nBIOGRAPHY\nBorn in England\, Andrew Beck now lives and works in Ottawa\, Canada. His passion for drawing and painting goes back as\nfar as he can remember; this early enthusiasm for visual art has continued throughout his life. After gaining a degree in\ngraphic design\, Andrew built a successful career in that field but the urge to paint remained. He continued to develop as an\nartist\, finally becoming full-time after emigrating to Canada in 2016. Andrew’s paintings have been exhibited in galleries\nthroughout the UK\, Germany and Canada and are featured in private and public collections in the UK and US. \nAndrew Beck’s last showing back in March.\n\nInterplays @ Studio Sixty Six40 photos

SUMMARY:Jean-Michel Blais
DESCRIPTION:Waking up to a summer rain storm\, or the Sunday noises of a quiet house: minimalist piano has a way of conjuring that sense of calm\, and evoking memories you’d long forgotten. Montreal’s Jean-Michel Blais’ (Arts & Crafts) enchanting instrumental compositions pair the melodic pop sensibilities of Amélie-era Yann Tiersen with the breathtaking technical skill of classical minimalists like Philip Glass and Erik Satie.

SUMMARY:Gallemit | Thériault
DESCRIPTION:Please join Studio Sixty Six for the opening reception of Gallemit | Thériault.\nTwo separate exhibitions by Ottawa artists Marisa Gallemit and Rémi Thériault \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, October 11\, 6-9pm.\nLocation: Studio Sixty Six\nShow Runs: October 11 – November 4 \nStudio Sixty Six is excited to be featuring 2 of Ottawa’s most well received and innovative artists\, Marisa Gallemit and Rémi Thériault! \nMarisa Gallemit\nTranslating Twice: listening for the echo\nExpanding on her continuing affinity for discarded materials\, Marisa Gallemit revisits the practice of manipulating bicycle tubes\, combining them with textile scraps and furniture to dissect the thorny realities of her third culture existence.\nIdentifying discarded objects as a contemporary renewable resource and contrasting them against the woven objects created by Filipino craftspeople since pre-colonial times\, she attempts to draw a direct line between her own methods of making and to those of her chimeric antecedents. \nRémi Thériault\nFRONT / First World War Landscapes\, A Canadian Perspective\nFront is a series of large-scale photographs illustrating the passing of war on landscapes rich with First World War history. This project flourished through two trips to France’s historical sites and landscapes. Traveling France’s countryside\, I got a sense of its intricate history. When I began Front in 2009\, I was primarily attracted to First World War sites masked by reconstruction\, such as the Vimy Memorial. It wasn’t until I entered Vimy Forest a couple of years later that I became fascinated with how the present-day character of a war space could boldly contrast its history. The Vimy Forest amazingly emitted serenity and beauty despite its violent past.\nWith the intention of illustrating the relationship between the present-day authenticity of these spaces and their war borne narratives\, I have furthered my project by collaborating with two local writers. I’ve invited them to create short fictional stories to accompany the images captured on this journey. Upon photographing Vimy\, I hoped to bring a contemporary outlook on these spaces contrary to the superseded lens traditionally used to characterize historical sites. \nFor more information please contact:\ninfo@studiosixtysix.ca\nOr call 613.355.0359\nSee Less

SUMMARY:Cheryl Pagurek - Fragile
DESCRIPTION:CHERYL PAGUREK\nFragile \nOctober 11 to November 27\, 2018 \nVERNISSAGE\nThursday\, October 11\, 5:30 to 7:30 pm \nQ&A WITH THE ARTIST:\nSunday\, November 18\, 2018\, 2:00 pm\nAll welcome. Free admission. Presented in English. \nVideos and photographs from the Tea Cups series explore the tenuous state of current world affairs. Made by projecting contemporary global news imagery into delicate vintage tea cups\, these works evoke our own human fragility\, the shattering of fragile notions of peace and social democracy\, and the vulnerability of the earth itself to natural disaster\, all while bringing worldwide events ‘closer to home’. \nThe magic of Cheryl Pagurek’s work lies in how she engages\, confronts and gets to the heart of the issue. At the same time\, she steps aside\, as a painter steps away from the canvas with her brush in hand. She invites us to participate in this back and forth\, a dynamic force that generates thought and anger\, an energy capable of transforming us into passport makers. \n-Excerpt from the essay by Marc Mercier \nSince receiving an MFA from the University of Victoria\, Cheryl Pagurek has shown widely in galleries\, public art events\, and film/video festivals\, including exhibits at MSVU Art Gallery\, Patrick Mikhail Gallery\, Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal\, VU Photo\, Gallery 44\, Carleton University Art Gallery\, Ottawa Art Gallery\, and screenings in Canada\, France\, Brazil\, Columbia\, Morocco\, Egypt and the USA. She installed a permanent video commission at an Ottawa transit station in 2011. Her work is in many public and private collections\, and has been reviewed in Canadian\, American and British publications. \nCITY HALL ART GALLERY\nOttawa City Hall\, 110 Laurier Avenue West\n613-580-2424 (28425) TTY 613-580-2401\nhttp://ottawa.ca/chag\nhttps://www.facebook.com/ottchag \nOpen daily to 8 pm\, including holidays.\nFree admission. SUMMARY:Danger Grove + Awards
DESCRIPTION:Danger Grove and Awards on tour! \nThis is a FREE\, ALL-AGES\, AFTERNOON event in the jewel of Mechanicsville’s musical marketplace\, The Record Centre! \nTwo of Canada’s most innovative hip-hop/electronic duos are teaming up this October to tour in support of their respective full-length debut albums. London\, Ontario-based AWARDS will release Warm Computers on Oct. 12\, the first album as well for Animal Street Records. The following week (Oct. 19)\, Ottawa-based Danger Grove will release Want\, For Nothing on Coax Records [INFO BELOW]. \nWhile both projects have their own unique attributes\, they represent the cutting edge of Canadian hip-hop\, expanding the genre into the electronic realm\, with lyrics that reflect contemporary politics and issues revolving around mental health and the effects of technology. This is a tour not to be missed! \nDANGER GROVE:\nOne day in the Enchanted Wood\, in a dark and humid grove\, there was a stirring and a little animal called Lizard brought a beat she had made to a large\, cynical\, tenuously notorious animal called rap legend Jesse Dangerously. \nrap legend Jesse Dangerously roared their appreciation – that tastes pretty good! Is there more! – and Lizard said yes I have got more. I’ll make more. There is more. \nA wise old owl said they were influenced by Aesop Rock and Ramshackle Glory\, and that the album they made together sounds like “if Drake listened to Neutral Milk Hotel.” It’s true they paid the owl to say this\, but that doesn’t mean he was lying. Money words can be true ideas. He even said they could “chance the shape of Canadian hip-hop to come” but gosh\, who knows? \nLink to their new album\, Want\, For Nothing\, on Coax Records \nAWARDS:\nAwards are important in the eyes of some that are interested in that sort of thing.\nAwards can be time based\, often only applied to a specific region. As a tribe or group expands\, or trades it’s mantra\, others can understand the importance of awards passed down from generation to generation.\nMost awards are meant for celebration to mark an achievement\, but sadly to admit\, Awards become useless as everything returns to the earth in the end. For now though\, we do hope you can follow and enjoy.\nAwards have their own sleeping bags we will come to your town.\nAwards are Thesis Sahib and Funken. \nLink to their new album\, Warm Computers\, on Animal Street Records
