SUMMARY:Boyhood and Muzzy Legault
DESCRIPTION:Boyhood \n\nWhen Caylie Runciman started calling herself Boyhood\, it was a nod to childhood nostalgia. Six years later\, the alias – and the beguiling bedroom anthems – are one and the same. Tough-kid guitar grit and deadpan verses give way to whimsical synthlines and delicate harmonies. But like an off-kilter merry-go-round\, or a candy shop in a seedy part of town\, there’s a shady layer to Runciman’s perfect pop. Her black magic is raw – equal parts ecstasy and heartbreak. And in among the bright colours\, there’s the joy and the pain in knowing what it means to grow up.\n\n\n\n\nMuzzy Legault\n\n\n\n\nTix : $10 @ door

Led by Ottawa rocker bassist/ vocalist Matt Spag (known for his high energy bass playing in bands BIG JEEZUS TRUCK\, HELLBROS\, etc) and drummer Astar. The pair create full tonal sound of rock n roll aided by Rickenbacker basses\, fuzz pedals\, thunderous drums and breathing fire (venue permitting). \n\nThe Haig (Ottawa Weirdo Rock/Alt)\n“The Haig have a sound that is not easy to describe\, and that’s why we love them. Their full-throttle rock has taken Ottawa by storm and propelled the band to great heights.” – Matías Muñoz\, Ottawa Showbox\n\nSweet Rocket (Ottawa LoFi Power Pop)\nCrunchy and catchy – you will hear a little Lemonheads/ Dinosaur Jr/Replacements/Husker Du\, in their tunes – who doesn’t want that!

SUMMARY:Trees and p o u t
DESCRIPTION:Winnipeg down-tempo band p o u t is leaving home – and heading out east for the first time.\n\nAbout p o u t:\n\nDissonant\, yet light-hearted. Ethereal\, but hard-hitting. Diving head first into the genre of trip-hop\, p o u t is exploring new textures and head-nodding rhythms with the incorporation of jazz stylings and instrumentation. Though at the same time keeping true to their roots with the same subby low ends\, and floating melodies. It’s down-tempo music\, that tries to express those feelings that are sometimes all too difficult to articulate with words alone.\n\nPerforming with ottawa locals – Trees

SUMMARY:Home Lands
DESCRIPTION:“Home Lands”\nRosalie Favell\nAugust 7 – September 2\, 2018\nMeet the artist – Thursday\, August 9th from 6-9pm\n\nThis selection of images by Rosalie Favell’s are a follow up to her “Facing the Camera” series. This new work is a compilation of her friends and colleagues taken in landscapes that are meaningful to them. Some are situated in their ancestral home lands while others choose a landscape of meaning to them.\n\nFavell draws creative inspiration from her family roots and her Metis\, Cree and English heritage. A photo-based artist from Winnipeg\, Manitoba\, Favell uses materials ranging from photo albums to pop culture to present a complex self-portrait of her experiences as a contemporary Aboriginal woman.\n\nHer artwork has been collected and acquired by numerous prestigious institutions including the National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography; the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian\, Washington\, D.C.; and Rockwell Museum of Western Art in Corning\, New York.\nSee website here: https://www.cubegallery.ca/exhibitions/2018_08_07_home_lands

SUMMARY:Vernissage: Reconcile/Overcome
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\nRECONCILE | OVERCOMEAugust 9 – September 9\, 2018Galerie AnnexeThis exhibition bridges the relationship two artists have to their history of colonization. One artist is forced to address her role as colonizer\, while the other works at addressing and overcoming stigma that is associated within colonized bodies and unifying her practice with other cultures through shared memories and experience.Shaya Ishaq is a Kenyan-Canadian multidisciplinary artist who explores how the body has historically been and is a site of colonial horror but how it can also manifest and act as a site of resistance. Her work focuses on the harmful stigmatization of hair in African cultures by the West and connects how similarity this specific intergenerational trauma resides in many indigenous colonized bodies. Ishaq uses a textile weaving technique called looping\, in which the weaver uses one strand of fibre to create a stronger piece. Through this process the artist creates sculptural garments that are then used as wears and photographed/filmed on subjects.Olivia Johnston’s works come from the position of the colonizer. An Ottawa-based photographer\, Johnston’s 2016 artist residency in Saint-Louis\, Senegal became difficult as she began to identify and attempt to reconcile her own distinct role as colonizer: in Canada; as a white tourist in Africa; and in relation to her ancestors’ active roles as colonial occupiers. These works thus introduce questions about representation\, portraiture\, self-portraiture and travel as experience. She presents her photographs as a way of documenting the resilience and complexity of Saint-Louis and its people\, while acknowledging that her experience becomes part of its narrative. This exhibition combines and examines the complexity of these relationships and how the artists negotiate their way through their reconciliation in their various disciplines.ARTISTSShaya Ishaq and Olivia JohnstonIMAGE CREDITOlivia Johnston\, I wish\, I wish\, I wish\, 2017\, inkjet print on photographic paper\, 30″ x 22″

SUMMARY:Corridor\, Sneaks\, Victime and Scattered Clouds
DESCRIPTION:Ottawa Explosion Weekend & First Crush Promotion presents… \nThursday June 15 2018 \nCorridor (Montréal\, QC)\nCorridor croise les genres\, emprunte au krautrock\, au post-punk et au jangle pop\, mais c’est surtout à force de recherches musicales que le quatuor a édifié son univers. Première performance à OXW!\n\nSneaks (Washington\, DC)\nVery excited to have Sneaks return to OXW! With little more than a bass\, drum machine\, and deadpan vocals\, Sneaks\, a.k.a. Eva Moolchan\, makes minimalist music that takes up space—something she herself has made a point of doing in the male-heavy Washington\, D.C.\, DIY punk scene that has been her home.\n\nVICTIME (Québec\, QC)\nBiberonnés à Sonic Youth et aux têtes de proues de Riot grrrl (Bikini Kill\, Le Tigre)\, inspirés par le noise des 90’s\, allant chercher la mémoire de Lizzy Mercier Descloux\, ces trois-là donnent un souffle punk\, mettent de la fougue dans l’ordinaire et le divertissement. Première performance à OXW!\n\nScattered Clouds (Hull\, QC)\nScattered Clouds is the sound of post apocalyptic romanticism. The Hull\, Québec experimental outfit underscores auto-fictional narratives with brooding rhythm\, cavernous vocals\, and precise noise.\n \n27 Club\n27 York St. \n$15 / 19+

SUMMARY:Lee Henderson @ G101's new space
DESCRIPTION:Gallery 101 is pleased to present: \nThe Known Effects of Lightning on the Body \nAnd \nA Hand That Points Aligns the Air \nBy Lee Henderson \nJune 8 to July 6\, 2018 \nGrand Opening: June 8\, 5-8pm \nNew gallery hours: Thursday and Friday noon to 6 and Saturdays noon to five.\nOr book a tour during regular gallery office hours: Tues – Fri\, 10 – 5 \nGallery 101 welcomes you to the grand opening of our brand new space at 280 Catherine Street\, across from the main bus station. On Friday June 8 from 5-8pm please drop in to celebrate the solo exhibition by Lee Henderson and tour our new\, bigger and better space: 2 floors\, 3 gallery zones\, sunny workshop and office areas. \nHenderson’s is a making practice marked by the persistence of collective histories and the brevity of individual lives… which is to say it’s funny\, in the same way King Lear is funny. \nHenderson is interested in understanding problems\, with an awareness that the work of the artist lies in revealing false problems rather than solving real ones. But whether investigating problems of definition or perception\, or of measurement or identification\, existential crises or mundane anxieties\, he found that they all collapse back to the central problem of the terminus\, that presumed point of ambiguous inevitability we spend our conscious lives avoiding\, or from which we supposedly sprang. This doesn’t have to mean the beginning/end of a particular human life—it can as easily be the disappearance of a culture\, the retrofitting of an edifice\, the emergence of a language\, or the transition between weather patterns. And like an electron or a fable\, when examined with care\, the terminus problem-point reveals itself to be permeable\, mutable\, and indiscernible. Throughout this process the artist stumbles\, gropes; ad then latches on to a piece of material\, or an historical factoid\, or the cultural baggage of an object\, or a quirk of language\, and become fascinated-obsessed until it reveals the mortal banality of its associations. Those associations—networks of human intellectual-emotional investment\, more commonly known as “meaning”—then find expression in reconfigurations of light\, text\, space\, sound\, and matter. Making an artwork is every bit as absurd\, direct\, and fruitful as rearranging furniture just to see the pattern on the floor. \nBIO\nLee Henderson (1979~) is a contemporary artist whose practice includes video\, photography\, installation\, sculpture\, performance\, and text. Henderson has studied art in Canada and Germany\, holding a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design (2003) and an MFA from the University of Regina (2005). He shows regularly across Canada\, and occasionally in Los Angeles\, Washington\, Chicago\, Naples\, and Berlin; notable recent venues include The Phillips Collection at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden\, the Magenta Festival Boston\, and The Zero Film Festival (USA); The Dunlop Art Gallery\, The Mendel Art Gallery\, The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery\, Nuit Blanche Edmonton\, and YYZ Artists’ Outlet (Canada); and kunstraum tapir\, Berlin (Germany). \nHenderson’s work can be found in private and public collections including the Mendel Art Gallery/Remai Modern\, the University of Regina President’s Collection\, and The Center for Fine Art Photography\, USA. He currently teaches art and media in Toronto at Ryerson and OCAD Universities. \nGallery 101 gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the City of Ottawa\, the Ontario Arts Council (an agency of the government of Ontario)\, and the Canada Council for the Arts. SUMMARY:David Bellemare\, Jessica Bell & Robert Taite
DESCRIPTION:Respective exhibitions of David Bellemare (Montreal) and Jessica Bell (Vancouver) & Robert Taite (Winnipeg) \nJune 6 — July 7\, 2018 \n| | | | | | | \nWednesday\, June 6 from 7PM to 11PM\nOpening reception \n* Performance by Sébastien Gandy (Montreal) \n► Catering by Chloé Berlanga\n► Music by DJ Glory Hull \nFree admission / Free parking / Cash bar \n— \nDavid Bellemare\nEncounter of the Third Kind \nDavid Bellemare’s Encounter of the Third Kind is a continuation of Magic or the Philosophy of Desire (2016)\, an immeasurable\, immersive work of about 39 meters in length\, split up in a series of vignettes painted on the same piece of canvas. \nBeyond the iteration of this immense canvas\, Bellemare continues his pictorial experiment by superimposing various interventions disseminated and dissipated from one end to the other of the work\, without however erasing the initial content. Thus\, expressive elements are sketched or variegated impulsively onto figurative planes. \nFrom the outset\, the scenic vignettes served as enigmatic magical invocations or symbols — sigils — while new images\, more virulent\, are true cries of the heart to save humanity from imminent dangers. This emancipative expression exerts an attractive force towards higher beings coming from the universe — the Extra-Terrestrials. Indeed\, they would have contacted the artist and conferred on him the title of Emissary of the Society of Cosmos. Their apocalyptic ideas are telepathically communicated to the artist\, and found conceptually and formally transposed onto the canvas. \nBe that as it may\, this Encounter of the Third Kind\, circumscribed in the space of AXENÉO7\, represents a dreamlike cosmos\, at times catastrophic and dystopian\, created consciously and unconsciously by David Bellemare. \n* Invited by David Bellemare\, performance artist Sébastien Gandy (Montreal) decided to play the game of the Encounter of the Third Kind exhibition. In order to transcend the painter’s world\, Gandy has devised a brand-new play\, a kind of ritualized event that attests to an encounter with beings from elsewhere. Adorned in ceremonial dress and surrounded by religious objects\, Sébastien Gandy will offer a series of symbolic and liturgical gestures to welcome each visitor at the opening reception. The playful and exuberant visual aesthetic of his performative practice echoes Bellemare’s enigmatic approach. \n→ https://axeneo7.com/en/david-bellemare-2/ \n— \nDavid Bellemare (Montreal) is from the Outaouais. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in painting and drawing from Concordia University (2014). He presented his work at Parisian Laundry (Montreal)\, at Casino Artspace (Hamilton) and at Centro Morelos de los Artes (Cuernavaca\, Mexico). \n— \nSébastien Gandy (Montreal) is a multidisciplinary artist from Gatineau. He is currently completing his Master’s degree in Visual and Media Arts at UQAM. He has participated in two exhibitions during the last year\, Pavillon at the Montreal School of Fine Arts and Prendre lieux at the Écomusée du fier monde (Montreal). \n/ / / / / / \nJessica Bell & Robert Taite\nAdding Softly\, Hardly Subtracting \nThe exhibition Adding Softly\, Hardly Subtracting is the result of the juxtaposition of two respective proposals by Jessica Bell (Vancouver) and Robert Taite (Winnipeg) as they form a collection through formal\, material and conceptual associations. Indeed\, Bell and Taite’s installations emanate from common decisions: interfering with one another and interwoven by additions and subtractions of matter and painting. \nOn the one hand\, Jessica Bell presents\, on the floor\, an enormous quilt made entirely by hand. Laborious and careful at the same time\, it consists of 40 patchworks of muslin fabric meticulously dyed and painted\, one by one\, at the artist’s home. Using a traditional quilt design — Drunkard’s Path — and through means of repetition\, Bell constructs\, deconstructs and reconstructs her painting gestures into a plethora of pictorial surfaces that behave like sculpture. The distinct forms of each piece converge into abstract patterns subjected to manipulation and transformation and are only temporarily assembled for the moment of the exhibition. In anticipation of possible iterations\, the quilt remains formally and physically tangible: manageable\, flexible and moreover fragile. \nOn the other hand\, Robert Taite proposes a series of modular combinations that are specifically configured for the architecture — the structure — of the gallery and which pay particular attention to Bell’s installation. A total of 409 rectangular pieces cut from poplar have been wrapped in canvas and painted in several colors of found mistinted latex house paint. The prisms are transposed into the space of AXENÉO7\, then arranged both strategically and intuitively to delimit negative spaces by diverting or surrounding architectural elements. Inspired by the abstraction of the 20th century\, especially between the support and the surface\, it takes a primitive gesture to overcome the traditional support and to deviate or decline the usual surface — material — in various volumes. In this sense\, only the essential component remains: painting. \n→ https://axeneo7.com/en/jessica-bell-and-robert-taite/ \n— \nJessica Bell (Vancouver) received an MFA in 2015 from the University of Ottawa. She has twice been a finalist in the RBC Canadian Painting Competition (2013\, 2015) and received a residency at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (North Adams) in 2016. Her recent solo exhibitions are Jessica Bell\, curated by Tobin Gibson at Unit 17 (Vancouver)\, Fits and Starts (Ottawa) and All Things Being Equal (Ottawa). Adding Softly\, Hardly Subtracting at AXENÉO7 (Gatineau) is Jessica Bell’s first exhibition with artist Robert Taite. \n— \nRobert Taite (Winnipeg) holds a BFA from the University of Manitoba. He was a finalist for the esteemed Royal Bank of Canada Painting Competition (2014\, 2015). He has exhibited in artist-run centres\, museums and galleries throughout Canada and the US and has participated in numerous fair presentations including Art Toronto (2014\, 2016\, 2017) and at Art Los Angeles Contemporary (2017)\, all with Lisa Kehler Art + Projects\, who he is represented by (Winnipeg). Taite has been the recipient of numerous grants from the Art Councils of Winnipeg\, Manitoba\, and Canada. He has held a long-term residency at L’oeil de poisson (Québec)\, where he had his first artist-run centre solo exhibition (2014). More recent exhibitions include Minimal(ist) Effort at Angell Gallery (Toronto)\, curated by Bill Clarke\, and Vague Motives at CYDONIA Gallery (Dallas\, Texas). Taite will be participating in an upcoming group exhibition titled Real Shapes\, at DATELINE Gallery (Denver\, Colorado).

SUMMARY:Sarah Bradley and Amanda Lowe
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Bradley\n\nSarah Bradley’s voice glows like a bonfire. Emerging as a formiddable new talent of the Franco-Ontarian music scene in the late 2000’s\, she was immediately scooped up as the voice of emerging indie-electro band\, FEVERS. \nThe band enjoyed almost immediate acclaim for their ecstatic mix of sweet hooks\, sophisticated arrangements\, and driving rhythms. FEVERS became a staple of the regional festival scene\, playing NXNE\, Ottawa Bluesfest\, JUNOfest and many more. At the heart of the band\, was Bradley’s unstoppable alto. It was only a matter of time before the young songwriter broke out on her own. \nFor The Kill represents Sarah Bradley’s boldest\, most sincere step into the limelight. Released in 2017\, the five song EP displays Sarah’s penchant for uncluttered lyricism\, and love for R&B\, Brill-building pop\, and the pioneering electronic artists who’ve come before her. Steeped in the romanticism of Carole King and Sade\, and the forward-looking arrangements of Eryka Badu and James Blake\, Sarah Bradley is a preternaturally confident talent\, just past the starting line of a long and inspiring career. \nAmanda Lowe\n\nBorn in Sri Lanka\, raised on Prince Edward Island and now residing in Ottawa\, ON – Amanda Lowe Warnakulasuriya is a multi-lingual singer-songwriter that writes music that can be sweet\, heartbreaking\, and enchanting. With just her voice\, her guitar\, a pinch of reverb\, and awkward wit she creates a warm inclusive vibe\, highlighting life’s dark\, cloudy and sunny days
