SUMMARY:Jom Comyn\, Siberian Breaks & Fire Antlers
DESCRIPTION:8PM | $10 | PRESSED \n***\nJom Comyn (Edmonton)\nI Need Love by Jom Comyn\n“For years Jom Comyn has been the kind of artist that fellow Edmontonians talk about in reverence. His guitar-based compositions are enlightening\, but on I Need Love he abandons that format temporarily for long-form experimentation. There’s some drone-like songs\, little interludes\, guitar-based lullabies\, and even a full-on Motown song. It’s bold and nothing one would ever expect from Jom Comyn\, which is why it’s nothing short of incredible.” -Grayowl Point \n***\nSiberian Breaks (Ottawa)\nan arctic expedition soundtrack; the baffin island house band; cold\, dark and lost. \n***\nFire Antlers (Ottawa)\nCrawl by Fire Antlers\nFire Antlers is the jittery\, pulsating beat of a half-functioning robot sent to Canada’s Capital to warn us about events that will probably never happen\, backed by the sparkling chug of a muted surf guitar and the existential crooning of a thirty year old office worker… Travis Kinnear\, supported by his archaic drum machine\, crafts a unique blend of lo-fi pop and sci-folk that is danceable and layered with internal reflections: like some classic car cruising through the cosmos where the passing scenery causes you to ponder past relationships and inevitable futures.

SUMMARY:Dominique Sirois - Skawennati
DESCRIPTION:Respective exhibitions by Dominique Sirois (Montreal) and Skawennati (Montreal) \nApril 18 — May 19\, 2018 \n| | | | | | | \nWednesday\, April 18 from 7PM to 11PM\nOpening reception \n► Catering by Chloé Berlanga\n► Music by DJ Glory Hull \nFree admission / Free parking / Cash bar \n→ https://axeneo7.com/fr/dominique-sirois-2/\n→ https://axeneo7.com/fr/skawennati-2/ \n— \nDominique Sirois\nDi$play_Body \nDi$play_Body presents a continuation of the research of Montreal-based artist Dominique Sirois\, who has focused on art and economics in her work since 2014. In resonance with the various iterations of Indice éternité (2016-2017) and Mimesis Trinity (2014-2017)\, the theme of finance is once again centralized through a combination of affects that conceptually and formally exacerbate the prevailing trends of greed for any miser obsessed with economy. Thus\, through possible utopian cessations\, economic retentions or mythical speculations\, Sirois presents the financial dimension divided into two different allegorical figures. These two representations\, or rather\, these extensions of financial manifestations\, propose opposing attitudes towards money: one that is between retention and donation\, or deprivation and permission. Figures made of casts and assemblages\, specific to Sirois’ iconography\, are intriguing\, and at the same time\, frightening. The practical exploration of ceramics is therefore intertwined in a bidding of both theoretical and anecdotal tracks. \nIn the first figure\, the traits of the previously mentioned miser are intensified through the features of a businesswoman\, not far from those of the controversial Martha Stewart\, who was accused of insider trading in 2004 and imprisoned that same year. Arranged on a tiled device\, the biomorphic body of the latter is dismantled into a somatic and anatomical span. This inert composition presents organic tension; it seems immutable — half natural and half artificial — even transhumanistic. \nIn the second figure\, the mythological figure of Danaë is summoned. According to the age-old Greek myth\, Acrisius confines his daughter Danaë to a tower when an oracle predicts that his descendants would kill him. Interestingly\, the tower to which Danaë is confined is nonetheless showered with gold sent from Zeus. Sirois appropriates this chimerical dispute in a representation of abundant salvation: a flood of coins. The bare body of Danaë is analogically linked to the nudes of art history\, and\, the Danaë figure painted in a series by Titian (between 1544 and 1560) is seen updated in the current perspectives of fashion and high fashion commercials\, including those of Versace. The body thus becomes a human support — a device — for luxurious objects. \nTransposed in an immersive and decorative installation space\, the arrangements suggest a metonymic displacement. The paradigm of art for art\, at times associated with decoration\, is correlated to that of money for money\, and as such should the exhibition be apprehended. In this installation\, the visitor is invited to experience an assembled interior worthy of a decor magazine; one punctuated with symmetrically arranged pieces\, ethereal elements and atypical furniture made with tiles. Armored textile pieces are contrasted with transparent ornamental fabric upon which is printed the traditional white shirt of the businessman\, however dislocated — even jumbled — it might be. \nDi$play_Body by Dominique Sirois introduces new formal and conceptual associations of greed\, linking the fictional to the decorative in an allegory for money by bodies converted into devices. \n— Jean-Michel Quirion \n— \nDominique Sirois lives and work in Montreal\, she hold a degree from University of Quebec in Montreal in visual art (MFA 2010) and is pursuing a PhD. Her installation work takes the form of sets composed of individual pieces often in the logic of assemblages. They are often sculptural\, associating ceramics\, casts and found objects. These assemblages have also as a starting point images where Sirois seek to play with the materiality of prints in dialogue with different material supports. With her projects\, Sirois creates mental spaces\, like semiotic and analogical constructions using economic\, aesthetic\, archeologic and digital references. Her projects have been presented in numerous galleries in Canada\, among them Clark centre\, Division gallery and Latitude 53. Sirois also did several residencies abroad (C.C.A.\, Glasgow\, Couvent des Récollets\, Paris and Hangar\, Barcelona). She frequently collaborates with artist Grégory Chatonsky\, they presented their joint work at MOCA Taipei\, at CDA of Enghien-les-Bains in France\, at Mois de la Photo in Montreal\, at Unicorn Center for Arts in Beijing and at l’IMAL in Brussels and more recently at Diagonale in Montreal. \n/ / / / / / \nSkawennati.\nTeiakwanahstahsontéhrha’ We Extend the Rafters \nChildren’s exhibition \nMy name is Iotetshèn:’en\, and I live on Earth-usually. Our planet is united under the Great Law of Peace. […] Earth has been attacked by more than one visitor from outerspace\, and our harmonious way of life is being threatened. So for now\, my home is this spaceship. We are travelling to the first meeting of the five nearest\, friendliest planets in our galaxy. The goal of our mission is to create a union that will protect us from attacks and also help us share our very different knowledges. I have been invited on this historic voyage because I have a special power… \nThus begins The Peacemaker Returns\, a futuristic saga set in 3025 yet firmly rooted in the ancestral Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) confederation story and featuring historical figures such as Tekanawí:ta\, Jacques Cartier\, and a president addicted to Twitter! This new machinima — an animation — style movie produced on the virtual reality platform Second Life — is the core of the children’s exhibition Teiakwanahstahsontéhrha’ | We Extend the Rafters\, designed specifically for kids aged 5 to 11 by Skawennati. Audiences of all ages are invited to (re)discover some traditions in the artist’s “museum of the future\,” an original installation. A guided tour and a collective workshop in the form of an innovative board game will encourage young and mature viewers alike to (re)learn history from an Indigenous perspective and imagine how all people can contribute to the world of tomorrow\, reminding us how History\, like any other narrative\, is a construction defined by those who tell it. \nAn exhibition produced and circulated by VOX — Centre de l’image contemporaine \n→ http://centrevox.ca/ \n— \nSkawennati makes art that addresses history\, the future\, and change from an Indigenous perspective. Best known for her machinimas — movies made in virtual environments — she also produces still images\, sculpture and textile works. \nHer pioneering new media projects include the online gallery/chat-space and mixed-reality event\, CyberPowWow (1997-2004); a paper doll/time-travel journal\, Imagining Indians in the 25th Century (2001); and TimeTraveller™ (2008-2013)\, a multi-platform project featuring nine machinima episodes. These have been presented in New Zealand\, Hawaii\, Ireland and across North America in major exhibitions such as “Now? Now!” at the Biennale of the Americas\, and “Looking Forward (L’Avenir)” at the Montreal Biennale. Skawennati is represented by ELLEPHANT and her award-winning work is included in both public and private collections. \nBorn in Kahnawà:ke Mohawk Territory\, Skawennati holds a BFA from Concordia University in Montreal\, where she is based. She is Co-Director\, with Jason E. Lewis\, of Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace (AbTeC)\, a research network of artists\, academics and technologists investigating\, creating and critiquing Indigenous virtual environments. She also co-directs their Skins workshops in Aboriginal Storytelling and Digital Media. In 2015\, AbTeC launched IIF\, the Initiative for Indigenous Futures; Skawennati is its Partnership Coordinator.

SUMMARY:The Arena - Live Painting Performance by Callen Schaub
DESCRIPTION:Join The Sussex Contemporary on April 15th from 6-8pm for a live performance and discussion with Callen Schaub\, the featured Artist in Residence for April\, 2018. \nMontreal-based artist Callen Schaub’s paintings seem to defy gravity. Colours burst from the centre of the image\, and paint drips down every edge of the canvas. If you look at them and ask yourself how these explosions of acrylic paint could have been made\, you wouldn’t be alone. Luckily for us\, Schaub isn’t shy about his techniques\, which are stunning performances in themselves. – Mercedes Grundy\, CBC Arts \nCallen Schaub is an abstract artist working with paint\, natural forces\, and machines in an innovative way to produce bold and thought-provoking contemporary artworks. With a growing performative practice\, Schaub often creates his paintings live at notable events and venues such as the Metro Toronto Convention Centre\, Nathan Phillips Square during Nuit Blanche\, the Field Trip Music and Arts Festival at Fort York\, Honest Ed’s\, and at the Soho House. Schaub has worked with various galleries across Canada including the Art Gallery of Ontario\, Duran Mahaal Gallery\, and Galerie Youn in Montreal\, Winsor Gallery in Vancouver\, Hatch Gallery in Prince Edward County as well as Project Gallery\, OnlyOneGallery\, and the Black Cat Gallery in Toronto. Schaub graduated from OCAD University in 2012.

SUMMARY:Pietro Amato & Jessie Stein: After Language
DESCRIPTION:Pietro Amato + Jessie Stein (of The Luyas)\nAFTER LANGUAGE (LP release)\nSunday\, April 15\, 4pm\nThe Record Centre\nPWYC / Free \nPietro Amato and Jessie Stein\, long-time collaborators and members of The Luyas present After Language: an expansive album of improvised music. \nThe album was made essentially by accident after a studio-mate was loaned a piano for the Luyas’ rehearsal space. “We weren’t even trying to make a record”\, says Amato of the sessions\, “we just got excited about having a piano in our space and started recording. It’s basically our subconscious coming out in audio form. We really didn’t actually set out to make anything specific.” \nThe improvisations sit in the general tradition of ambient music but retain important aspects of melodic structure. The piano and organs move from serene patience to frenetic blistering moments. After Language is a flow of two 20 minute-long tracks\, drenched with weltschmerz recorded live off the floor in Montréal\, with minimal edits. The album was mixed by Sandro Perri.

SUMMARY:Catriona Sturton & Liz Stevens
DESCRIPTION:Catriona Sturton \n“Hers is not a bombastic solo outing\, but rather an emotional journey informed by her tender voice\, bluesy guitar and raw\, expressive harmonica” – Lynn Saxberg\, Ottawa Citizen \nSings like an angel\, plays like a beast. Rock and roll lover of Heavenly and the heaviest blues. After learning to file harmonica reeds in a back alley\, Catriona toured Canada as the bassist for Halifax teen-rockers\, Plumtree (who inspired the cult-favourite book and movie\, Scott Pilgrim\, with their song of the same name). She’s played with Italian harmonica wizards\, a Hiroshima-based garage rock band\, and has been a hired harp gun for Canadian folk and indie favourites before striking out on her own.\n \nLiz Stevens \nThe dynamic lead singer and songwriter of Alberta’s Copperhead\, who blend dark\, throaty Motown\, swaggering rock\, folk with a rusty edge and some spacey instrumentation\, is loved for her haunting melodies and smoky\, soulful voice. Her electric guitar-based songs are characterized by a blues heart and rock ‘n’ roll soul.

They exist between decay and renewal. \nThe forthcoming exhibition\, ‘Ghosts’\, is a new series of paintings made with extracted pigments from decaying plants and flowers. King continues to work with materials like beeswax and earth sediments\, and has now incorporated plant pigments that are extracted through steam dyeing methods. ‘Ghosts’ is an invitation to consider the topography of painted surfaces and our relationship to landscapes today. \nThese traces of pigmentation are not the only ghosts in Gillian King’s work. The paintings are evidence of her body moving through time. Beginning outdoors\, she gathers raw materials; earth sediments\, plants\, and flowers. In the studio\, she uses her hands to work with the materials in order to gain an intimate understanding of them and her function within local ecosystems. \nSympoiesis\, meaning\, becoming-with is a central idea in ‘Ghosts’. Donna Haraway elaborates on the concept of sympoiesis in Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene. Sympoiesis challenges the human-centric framing of the Anthropocene; a new destructive environmental period thought to be caused by human impact on the natural environment. Haraway’s alternative interpretation is the Chthulucene. Derived from the greek word chthon\, meaning “earth”\, Chthulucene considers all things that dwell in or under the earth. The focus is on how everything is codependent\, such as bacteria\, plants\, flowers\, and beeswax. King and her canvases are then connected. Like Haraway\, King is interested in deviating from the idea that our relationship to the environment is without hope. Rather\, her gestures are traces that consider sympoiesis\, or how to make-with nature’s ecosystems. \nThank you to the Ontario Arts Council – Conseil des arts de l’Ontario\, Ottawa Arts Council\, and the Nancy Petry Foundation for their financial support in the research\, making\, and execution of this exhibition. \nFor more information about the Nancy Petry Award please visit:\nhttp://www.joeplaskett.com/petry.php?lang=en \n=============================================\nABOUT GILLIAN KING: \nGillian King is an Ottawa based painter. She holds an MFA from the university of Ottawa\, and a BFA from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. \nKing is the the recipient of the 2017 RBC Ottawa Emerging Artist Award and the 2017 Nancy Petry Award . She has recently completed residencies at Nes Artist Residency (Skagaströnd\, Iceland)\, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity (Banff\, Alberta)\, and Spark Box Studio (Picton\, Ontario). In 2016\, she exhibited in group shows at PDA Projects (Ottawa\, Ontario)\, Galerie Karsh-Masson Gallery (Ottawa\, Ontario)\, and a solo exhibition titled\, ‘Becoming Animal’\, at the Ottawa Art Gallery – Galerie d’art d’Ottawa (Ottawa\, Ontario). In 2017\, she exhibited at La Maison des Artistes (Winnipeg\, Manitoba)\, the City of Ottawa Annual Acquisitions exhibition at the Karsh-Masson Gallery for ‘Longevity’\, and had a solo exhibition\, ‘Megacaldera’\, at the University of Marinette (Marinette\, Wisconsin\, USA). She was honoured to be Ontario’s representative at the 50th Anniversary The Robert McLaughlin Gallery exhibition titled ‘Ab NEXT ’

Inaugurating the first-ever visiting artist series to take place in SPAO’s new multi-purpose Panasonic Studio\, “Indigenous Praxis” has been designed to make a pointed acknowledgment of the First Peoples on whose traditional territory SPAO is located. \nSPAO is excited to present an illustrious panel of contemporary Indigenous artists and arts professionals to give presentations on their work with photography and lens-based media and the issues they address. The critically-acclaimed photographer and independent curator Jeff Thomas and the award-winning and internationally recognized photo-based artist Rosalie Favell will discuss the subjects of identity and Indigeneity in their work. These two Karsh Award winners will be joined in conversation with Steven Loft\, the Director of the Creating Knowing and Sharing: The Arts and Cultures of First Nations\, Inuit and Métis Peoples program with the Canada Council for the Arts. \n“Parfocal Lens: Indigenous Praxis” offers an occasion to learn more about the panelists’ important work and how they put their far-reaching vision into practice. \nImage credit: Rosalie Favell\, I awoke to find my spirit had returned\, 1999. \nArtists’ Bios: \nBorn in Winnipeg\, Rosalie Favell is an award-winning Canadian photographer whose practice takes inspiration from her Métis (Cree/English) heritage. One hundred years later\, I am creating contemporary artwork that reflects the new Canadian landscape. I embody Marshall McLuhan’s phrase “the medium is the message” by ruining other people’s landscape paintings with toxic accidents. \nRuined Landscapes is a painting series whereby I ‘hijack’ vintage\, mass-produced\, Bob Ross-style landscape paintings found in thrift stores and antique shops\, and I paint in hazmat cleanup crews and man-made environmental disasters. Many of the painting titles are appropriated from actual news headlines from real accidents that have occurred in Canada. Train derailments\, fuel truck rollovers\, oil tankers running aground\, and illegal chemical dumping are just some of the toxic disasters reflected in these truly Canadian landscape paintings. \n☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️ \nAbout the Artist:\nMarc Adornato (1977 – not dead yet) \nAdornato (BFA\, NSCAD) is a Canadian contemporary artist\, satirist\, reformed antique hoarder\, and occasional shit-disturber. His provocative art practice usually consists of sharp socio-political critique\, with themes of wealth inequality\, terrorism\, state surveillance\, technology\, pollution\, and plagiarism – with a hint of dystopian sarcasm or dark humour. Adornato explores a wide range of mediums and disciplines including painting\, sculpture\, assemblage\, performance\, ready-mades\, video\, and sound. \n“I don’t have stylistic loyalty. That’s why people perceive me changing all the time. But there is a real continuity in my subject matter.” – Adornato \nHe received a degree in Fine Arts from NSCAD University in Halifax\, Nova Scotia. Bragging rights over the past decade include exhibits in the Canadian War Museum\, the Bank of Canada’s Currency Museum\, the Ottawa Art Gallery\, the Canada Science and Technology Museum\, and the Diefenbunker Museum. His work resides in the permanent art collections of the City of Ottawa\, the Diefenbunker Museum\, as well as several private and celebrity collections in Canada and abroad. \nFor more information about the artist\, visit http://www.ADORNATO.com \n☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️ \nA SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR EXHIBITION SPONSORS \nThe Hintonburg Public House\nMatt Love Royal LePage Team Realty\nNick Bachusky\nMint Hair Studio\nMaker House Co.\nBrew Donkey\nASAPpm\nSh*ttyShades

SUMMARY:Alex 'Bender' Buchanan: A Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:On March 1\, 2018\, Ottawa lost a humble genius.\nAlex ‘Bender’ Buchanan was a man of many hats: MC\, producer\, writer\, visual artist and battle rapper.\nFor many people here in Ottawa — and far beyond — we were lucky enough to add the title of friend to that list. \nHaving Bender as a friend was a privilege. In the give-and-take of any friendship it was a barter system that always worked out in your favour. Trade him sleeping on your couch for a verse that would leave you transfixed and dazzled. Your last cold beer for a chance to bop your head to his beats of brutally beautiful boom bap. Offer up the glow from your TV set to see him destroy round after round of Jeopardy with Einstein-like instinct. Bender never disappointed. \nHis approach to his artistry was both obsessive and prolific and he has left us with many gifts. \nIn his far too brief career he gave us three full-length LPs as a member of Flight Distance\, a large body of artwork with a focus on portraiture\, hours of classic battle rap footage and countless social media posts that could rival the wit of any Harvard grad in a comedy writers’ room. \nIn spite of all of this Bender never once made you feel like he was better than\, or above you. He always made you feel like an equal. \nBender was humble. Bender was a genius. But on top of it all Bender was kind. If you offered up your heart to him he’d give you his right back. —DA \n—————\nThe evening of Thursday\, March 29\, we — Bender’s closest friends — will be celebrating his life at Babylon\, the club where Flight Distance played its first show many\, many years ago\, and its final show in late 2017. The night will include the music Bender made and the music he loved\, being spun by the DJs with whom he worked closest; select pieces of his artwork\, along with art from friends and those he inspired\, and an open mic for those wishing to share memories\, stories or favourite verses. (Please be respectful: This is not an opportunity for exposure. Bender’s family will be present\, and while they very much look forward to hearing stories about him\, they don’t want to hear your latest 16 bars\, etc.) \nFood will be provided by one of Bender’s favourite restaurants\, TWO SIX {ATE}\nMemorial t-shirts and artwork will be available for purchase with all proceeds going to Bender’s family
