SUMMARY:Flying Hórses and Mal Aimé
DESCRIPTION:National Arts Centre Presents Series:\nFLYING HÓRSES\nFlying Hórses is the project of composer-pianist Jade Bergeron. With an unapologetic air of whimsy\, Flying Hórses combines piano\, Wurlitzer\, chimes\, bells and cello to create otherworldly\, instrumental soundscapes. Her debut album\, Tölt\, was recorded with Sigur Rós’ producer\, Biggi Birgisson\, at Sundlaugin Studio in Iceland. She has performed at Festival International de Jazz de Montreal\, Iceland Airwaves\, and was nominated for the 2018 Prism Prize\, for Best Canadian Music Video\, alongside Leonard Cohen\, The Weeknd\, Feist\, and Grimes.\n\nMAL/AIMÉ\nmal/aimé are a three-piece experimental-chamber trio from Ottawa. Effect-laden clarinet melismas blend with circular synth passages\, hypnotic guitar lines and found samples. The resulting sound ebbs and flows between anxious and meditative passages that juxtapose comfort and affliction.

One hundred years later\, I am creating contemporary artwork that reflects the new Canadian landscape. I embody Marshall McLuhan’s phrase “the medium is the message” by ruining other people’s landscape paintings with toxic accidents. \nRuined Landscapes is a painting series whereby I ‘hijack’ vintage\, mass-produced\, Bob Ross-style landscape paintings found in thrift stores and antique shops\, and I paint in hazmat cleanup crews and man-made environmental disasters. Many of the painting titles are appropriated from actual news headlines from real accidents that have occurred in Canada. Train derailments\, fuel truck rollovers\, oil tankers running aground\, and illegal chemical dumping are just some of the toxic disasters reflected in these truly Canadian landscape paintings. \n☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️ \nAbout the Artist:\nMarc Adornato (1977 – not dead yet) \nAdornato (BFA\, NSCAD) is a Canadian contemporary artist\, satirist\, reformed antique hoarder\, and occasional shit-disturber. His provocative art practice usually consists of sharp socio-political critique\, with themes of wealth inequality\, terrorism\, state surveillance\, technology\, pollution\, and plagiarism – with a hint of dystopian sarcasm or dark humour. Adornato explores a wide range of mediums and disciplines including painting\, sculpture\, assemblage\, performance\, ready-mades\, video\, and sound. \n“I don’t have stylistic loyalty. That’s why people perceive me changing all the time. But there is a real continuity in my subject matter.” – Adornato \nHe received a degree in Fine Arts from NSCAD University in Halifax\, Nova Scotia. Bragging rights over the past decade include exhibits in the Canadian War Museum\, the Bank of Canada’s Currency Museum\, the Ottawa Art Gallery\, the Canada Science and Technology Museum\, and the Diefenbunker Museum. His work resides in the permanent art collections of the City of Ottawa\, the Diefenbunker Museum\, as well as several private and celebrity collections in Canada and abroad. \nFor more information about the artist\, visit http://www.ADORNATO.com \n☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️ \nA SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR EXHIBITION SPONSORS \nThe Hintonburg Public House\nMatt Love Royal LePage Team Realty\nNick Bachusky\nMint Hair Studio\nMaker House Co.\nBrew Donkey\nASAPpm\nSh*ttyShades

SUMMARY:Alex 'Bender' Buchanan: A Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:On March 1\, 2018\, Ottawa lost a humble genius.\nAlex ‘Bender’ Buchanan was a man of many hats: MC\, producer\, writer\, visual artist and battle rapper.\nFor many people here in Ottawa — and far beyond — we were lucky enough to add the title of friend to that list. \nHaving Bender as a friend was a privilege. In the give-and-take of any friendship it was a barter system that always worked out in your favour. Trade him sleeping on your couch for a verse that would leave you transfixed and dazzled. Your last cold beer for a chance to bop your head to his beats of brutally beautiful boom bap. Offer up the glow from your TV set to see him destroy round after round of Jeopardy with Einstein-like instinct. Bender never disappointed. \nHis approach to his artistry was both obsessive and prolific and he has left us with many gifts. \nIn his far too brief career he gave us three full-length LPs as a member of Flight Distance\, a large body of artwork with a focus on portraiture\, hours of classic battle rap footage and countless social media posts that could rival the wit of any Harvard grad in a comedy writers’ room. \nIn spite of all of this Bender never once made you feel like he was better than\, or above you. He always made you feel like an equal. \nBender was humble. Bender was a genius. But on top of it all Bender was kind. If you offered up your heart to him he’d give you his right back. —DA \n—————\nThe evening of Thursday\, March 29\, we — Bender’s closest friends — will be celebrating his life at Babylon\, the club where Flight Distance played its first show many\, many years ago\, and its final show in late 2017. The night will include the music Bender made and the music he loved\, being spun by the DJs with whom he worked closest; select pieces of his artwork\, along with art from friends and those he inspired\, and an open mic for those wishing to share memories\, stories or favourite verses. (Please be respectful: This is not an opportunity for exposure. Bender’s family will be present\, and while they very much look forward to hearing stories about him\, they don’t want to hear your latest 16 bars\, etc.) \nFood will be provided by one of Bender’s favourite restaurants\, TWO SIX {ATE}\nMemorial t-shirts and artwork will be available for purchase with all proceeds going to Bender’s family

SUMMARY:GINNY EP Release at The Concorde Motel
DESCRIPTION:Presented by OTTAWA ALT-COUNTRY FOLK & BLUES and MAVN \nGINNY EP release show @ The Concorde Motel \nDate: March 16th\, 2018\nConcorde Tavern and Sports Bar – 333 Montreal Rd\, Ottawa\n$10 Advance* $12 Door // 19+ // Doors at 9PM\, Bands at 10PM\n***Tickets available at The Record Centre & The Concorde Motel front desk + Eventbrite*** \nGINNY with Special Guest Matt Miwa\nGINNY is the haunting country project of vocalist Lesley Marshall (Bonnie Doon)\, guitarist Catriona Sturton (ex-Plumbtree)\, and bassist Kristy Nease (Area Resident). Their debut release takes on the dark romance of falling in love: the awakening; the shaking of the past; facing the inevitable end. Marshall’s haunting lyrics in combination with the guitar styling of Sturton are delivered like electric lullabies\, an eerie waltz of elation and heartbreak. Matt Miwa joins GINNY bringing his own sultry lounge singer style.\n\n———\nThe Railway Hotel\nThe Railway Hotel was formed in the spring of 2016 for the release of Seany Sharko’s debut solo album\, September Comes Too Soon. The band plays a blend of psychedelic folk rock and are currently in the studio working on their debut EP\, with an anticipated release of summer 2018. \n———————————-\nOmmie Jane\nOttawa singer-songwriter and high-femme country priestess. \n~The Concorde Motel is regretfully not wheelchair accessible. SUMMARY:Conversations in the Commons - Algorithms for Good
DESCRIPTION:MediaStyle presents the second installment of its new speaker series: Conversations in The Commons. This series brings researchers from Carleton University into The Commons to talk about big issues in their respective fields of research. These conversations will take the form of informal armchair discussions\, facilitated by a MediaStyle team member. Grab a drink/nibble\, sit back\, and learn with us. \n*Space is limited – RSVP on Eventbrite now to secure your spot* \nTechnology shapes how we perceive the world around us. Invisible forces – algorithms – track our behaviours\, with the goal of serving content tailored to our tastes. \nWhat are the implications of technology predicting our next move? Are we simply living in a world with more easily digestible content\, or are we living in our own echo chambers? What does it mean for you\, and what does it mean for democracy? \nJoin MediaStyle for a discussion with Dr. Sandra Robinson from Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication. She’ll bring her specialization in the topics of privacy and surveillance\, social data and analytics\, and software design and algorithms to help us understand the impact of technology in our increasingly public lives.

SUMMARY:Shadowhand\, Heavy Medicine Band & Merganzer
DESCRIPTION:Ottawa Showbox & CHUO 89.1 FM\, Record Centre Records\, & Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co. present… \nSHOWBOX CONCERT SERIES ft. \nShadowhand (Ottawa daze)\n\nShadowhand arranges folk songs in a ghostly style of soul music. Described as the sound of leaving a party alone to walk to the store for cigarettes\, the band creates a richly dark\, down-tempo\, and ambient sound. \nThe band will be releasing their debut full-length at the concert series on March 10th. \n+ \nThe Heavy Medicine Band (Ottawa folk noir) \n\n“Of all the bands making music in Ottawa—or even Canada\, for that matter—the Heavy Medicine Band is pursuing a style and sound that is wholly their own. It’s phsyc-rock dipped in folk noir\, driven by the profound lyricism and vocal prowess of Keturah Johnson. On their debut full-length ERSATZ ERA\, the band weaves together texturized soundscapes that could be the soundtrack of a dream…” – Matias Munoz\, Ottawa Showbox \n+ \nMerganzer (Ottawa experimental pop) \nMerganzer is the new experimental pop project of Violinist Mika Posen (Timber Timbre\, Agnes Obel\, Forest City Lovers). She sings songs built from sampled strings\, homemade beats\, soaring sine waves\, and plaintive vocal melodies. \nTHRIFT POP-UP: \nThe Ottawa-based online thrift store Tall Pines Thrift will be setting up a rack full of amazing finds at our Concert Series March 10th. Their aim is to operate sustainably with a focus on Canadian-made items. Be sure to follow them on Instagram and keep an eye on all their wicked finds! \n————\nDetails: \nSaturday\, March 10\nSt. Alban’s Church (454 King Edward Ave)\n7:30 pm / $10 adv / $12 door\nAll Ages & Licensed 19+ \nPoster art by Jamieson Mackay
