SUMMARY:Shadowhand\, Heavy Medicine Band & Merganzer
DESCRIPTION:Ottawa Showbox & CHUO 89.1 FM\, Record Centre Records\, & Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co. present… \nSHOWBOX CONCERT SERIES ft. \nShadowhand (Ottawa daze)\n\nShadowhand arranges folk songs in a ghostly style of soul music. Described as the sound of leaving a party alone to walk to the store for cigarettes\, the band creates a richly dark\, down-tempo\, and ambient sound. \nThe band will be releasing their debut full-length at the concert series on March 10th. \n+ \nThe Heavy Medicine Band (Ottawa folk noir) \n\n“Of all the bands making music in Ottawa—or even Canada\, for that matter—the Heavy Medicine Band is pursuing a style and sound that is wholly their own. It’s phsyc-rock dipped in folk noir\, driven by the profound lyricism and vocal prowess of Keturah Johnson. On their debut full-length ERSATZ ERA\, the band weaves together texturized soundscapes that could be the soundtrack of a dream…” – Matias Munoz\, Ottawa Showbox \n+ \nMerganzer (Ottawa experimental pop) \nMerganzer is the new experimental pop project of Violinist Mika Posen (Timber Timbre\, Agnes Obel\, Forest City Lovers). She sings songs built from sampled strings\, homemade beats\, soaring sine waves\, and plaintive vocal melodies. \nTHRIFT POP-UP: \nThe Ottawa-based online thrift store Tall Pines Thrift will be setting up a rack full of amazing finds at our Concert Series March 10th. Their aim is to operate sustainably with a focus on Canadian-made items. Be sure to follow them on Instagram and keep an eye on all their wicked finds! \n————\nDetails: \nSaturday\, March 10\nSt. Alban’s Church (454 King Edward Ave)\n7:30 pm / $10 adv / $12 door\nAll Ages & Licensed 19+ \nPoster art by Jamieson Mackay

SUMMARY:Giant Hand & Blunt Chunks
DESCRIPTION:Giant Hand \nStrength has little to do with impenetrable walls or prideful swagger. True strength lies in surrender. Armed with a dusty tenor and fearless prose\, Giant Hand has quietly sown a formidable canon of outsider folk and drone-gospel. After two critically-lauded\, underground releases\, Giant Hand presents Old Cosmos\, a confident yet ever unhinged collection of naked confessionals. Co-produced by The Acorn and Evening Hymns\, Old Cosmos explodes upward from Giant Hand’s earlier\, aberrant foundations\, into Gaudí-like spires of pristine and fearless art-folk.\n \nBlunt Chunks \nBlunt Chunks is the solo project of Caitlin Woelfle-O’Brien\, born out of a curiosity and desperation for exploring the endless world of sound and song. Using looping pedals\, samplers and an ever-changing selection of electronic gear and instruments\, Caitlin’s songs swirl around you like a settling mist. Combining pop sensibility\, ambient tones and vocal layering\, her songs have been described as “music to keep close to your heart”\, “electronic Dolly Parton”\, “hypnotic” and “mermaid folk”.\nLean 2 U by Blunt Chunks \nDoors at 8PM\n$8.00 Online\n$10.00 at the door

SUMMARY:Moving Carbon @ Seven Below Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Frew‘s work has long been characterized by strong\, expressive linework. With Moving Carbon\, Frew presents a series of emotive figurative pieces on wood\, canvas and paper that feature his signature mark making. These engaging pieces are intended to be felt\, not thought\, emphasizing the simplicity and purity of the human form. \nThe title of the show refers to both the carbon-based materials used in the prominent line work\, as well as the subjects themselves who are carbon-based. The subjects are still\, even introspective\, but built from expressive lines that bring movement and life to the image. The result is intended to elicit emotion\, thus moving the viewer.

SUMMARY:Ben Globerman's Call To Prayer [Performance]
DESCRIPTION:BEN GLOBERMAN\nCall to Prayer \nJanuary 17 to March 14\, 2018\n\nMusical performance and Q&A: Sunday\, February 18\, 2:00 to 2:45 p.m.All welcome. Free admission. \n“All roads lead to the one House\nfrom one seed a thousand ears of corn emerge.”\n-Rumi \nFor the 13th-century Persian mystic and poet Rumi\, the many can be found in the one; different paths lead to the same destination. The purpose of Call to Prayer is to explore those different paths and bring them together through their music. Call to Prayer is an immersive\, sonic installation drawing on the musical traditions of Judaism\, Christianity and Islam. Beginning as separate threads\, the voices of three Ottawa vocalists (in order of appearance: Daniel Benlolo\, Terri-Lynn Mitchell and Mona Bahumaid) gradually become entwined\, ultimately forming a tonal fabric that finds harmony in difference. -Catalogue Excerpt \nBEN GLOBERMAN is a musician\, sound designer\, and multimedia artist based in Ottawa\, Ontario. He holds an MA in European Studies (Carleton University) with a specialization in migration\, and a BA in Religious Studies (Carleton University)\, and is a graduate from the Red Bull Music Academy (New York\, USA). He is particularly interested in translating conceptual ideas to sound. \nBen has composed works for film\, theatre\, and installation\, and has created projects in diverse fields such as healthcare\, fashion and public services. Under his Cabaal moniker\, he has performed throughout North America\, and released four LPs. His installations have explored themes of religious pluralism\, bleeding-edge technology\, and the therapeutic qualities of sound. \nBen Globerman gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the City of Ottawa and the Ontario Arts Council. \nCITY HALL ART GALLERY \nOttawa City Hall\, 110 Laurier Avenue West\n613-580-2424 (28425) TTY 613-580-2401\nhttps://ottawa.ca/chag \nOpen daily 9 am to 8 pm\, including holidays.\nFree admission.
