SUMMARY:Moving Carbon @ Seven Below Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Frew‘s work has long been characterized by strong\, expressive linework. With Moving Carbon\, Frew presents a series of emotive figurative pieces on wood\, canvas and paper that feature his signature mark making. These engaging pieces are intended to be felt\, not thought\, emphasizing the simplicity and purity of the human form. \nThe title of the show refers to both the carbon-based materials used in the prominent line work\, as well as the subjects themselves who are carbon-based. The subjects are still\, even introspective\, but built from expressive lines that bring movement and life to the image. The result is intended to elicit emotion\, thus moving the viewer.

SUMMARY:Ben Globerman's Call To Prayer [Performance]
DESCRIPTION:BEN GLOBERMAN\nCall to Prayer \nJanuary 17 to March 14\, 2018\n\nMusical performance and Q&A: Sunday\, February 18\, 2:00 to 2:45 p.m.All welcome. Free admission. \n“All roads lead to the one House\nfrom one seed a thousand ears of corn emerge.”\n-Rumi \nFor the 13th-century Persian mystic and poet Rumi\, the many can be found in the one; different paths lead to the same destination. The purpose of Call to Prayer is to explore those different paths and bring them together through their music. Call to Prayer is an immersive\, sonic installation drawing on the musical traditions of Judaism\, Christianity and Islam. Beginning as separate threads\, the voices of three Ottawa vocalists (in order of appearance: Daniel Benlolo\, Terri-Lynn Mitchell and Mona Bahumaid) gradually become entwined\, ultimately forming a tonal fabric that finds harmony in difference. -Catalogue Excerpt \nBEN GLOBERMAN is a musician\, sound designer\, and multimedia artist based in Ottawa\, Ontario. He holds an MA in European Studies (Carleton University) with a specialization in migration\, and a BA in Religious Studies (Carleton University)\, and is a graduate from the Red Bull Music Academy (New York\, USA). He is particularly interested in translating conceptual ideas to sound. \nBen has composed works for film\, theatre\, and installation\, and has created projects in diverse fields such as healthcare\, fashion and public services. Under his Cabaal moniker\, he has performed throughout North America\, and released four LPs. His installations have explored themes of religious pluralism\, bleeding-edge technology\, and the therapeutic qualities of sound. \nBen Globerman gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the City of Ottawa and the Ontario Arts Council. \nCITY HALL ART GALLERY \nOttawa City Hall\, 110 Laurier Avenue West\n613-580-2424 (28425) TTY 613-580-2401\nhttps://ottawa.ca/chag \nOpen daily 9 am to 8 pm\, including holidays.\nFree admission. She has performed\, exhibited\, and curated around the world since 2002\, exploring the politics of gender\, race\, motherhood\, identity and the construct of the Canadian landscape in the Latin American diaspora and vernacular. \nSilla and Rise blend Inuit throat-singing and futuristic dancefloor beats. Silla are Cynthia Pitsiulak (Kimmirut\, NU) and Charlotte Qamaniq (Iglulik\, NU) their name comes from the Inuktitut word “Sila” meaning weather. Sila is what surrounds us; it is what connects us to our land\, to the moon\, sun and stars\, the ocean and the air we breathe. In respecting and honouring the need to preserve Inuit culture and paying homage to our land and the strong connection to its spirituality\, they experience and perform the sounds of traditional and contemporary throat songs. Rise is Ottawa’s Rise Ashen\, a Juno Award nominated global-grooves producer\, DJ and dancer who has spent his life pursuing the intersection of traditional and futuristic music. \nOtherwise known as the supernatural rapper mom\, Sydanie is a Toronto born\, Jamaican-Trinidadian emcee pushing the boundaries and expectations for style and content from women in the Toronto hip hop scene. SUMMARY:Nightshades / Anemone / Warp Lines / Baby Cages [Megaphono 2018]
DESCRIPTION:MEGAPHONO and POP Montreal present \nNightshades\n \nANEMONE\n \nWARP LINES \nBABY CAGES\n \nat Dominion Tavern\n77 York St \n$12 at doors\nFree with MEGA PASS or FO’SHOWS wristband.\nFestival passes available here > https://goo.gl/eVjTpZ \nDoors at 8:30 pm\n19+ / licensed \n2013: Nightshades began as the melancholic brainchild of Ottawa’s Mallory Giles. Heartbroken\, broke\, and new to guitar\, Giles’ intentions were to start a country band\, but\nonce drummer\, Geoff Clarke joined the band\, their dynamic was anything but: “We lived in the same apartment complex\, both searching around for musical partners. Eventually in rehearsals\, she’d show her songs\, and we’d just go faster and faster. We had no intention of picking up so much speed and writing punk songs\, but it felt really\, right” Clarke says.\nWith 2 DIY EP’s under their belt\, and a major recruit on bass\, Dean Morris (the Haig)\, Nightshades was complete. The band released their self-titled debut in December 2017\, and the record\, released Independently\, touches on darker themes: insomnia\, brutal heartbreak\, and the trials of coping mentally in the midst of Canadian winter. \nWarp Lines – Once described as ‘not my thing’ by a local show goer\, these veterans of Ottawa’s punk scene lay bare their struggle with impending irrelevancy in a collection of songs that’ll leave you thinking\, ‘meh’. \nBaby Cages‘ forthcoming release Bitter Melon is practically celebratory in comparison to the band’s dirge-skirting roots. Shifting gears from downtempo doom to textured\, ruminative guitar pop\, Bitter Melon offers a lush palette of tones and memorable\, off-kilter melodies. Subtle nods to krautrock and new wave keep the 6-song ode to complicated friendships bubbling against “the weighty cliff… [of frontwoman] Halloway Jones’ formidable voice”. \nMEGAPHONO’s Safer Spaces policy is intended to make this event a supportive environment. SUMMARY:Mauno / Boyhood / Helena Deland [Megaphono 2018]
DESCRIPTION:MEGAPHONO and Lixar present \nMauno\n\n \nBoyhood\n\n \nHelena Deland\n \nat St. Alban’s\n454 King Edward Ave \n$12 advance / $15 at doors\nFree with MEGA PASS or FO’SHOWS wristband.\nTickets and festival passes available here > https://goo.gl/eVjTpZ\nTickets also available at The Record Centre\, Vertigo Records\, and both locations of Compact Music Inc. \nDoors at 8:00 pm\nall ages / licensed \nEver since forming in September 2014\, Mauno has had a wandering sound that refuses to be pinned down. On Rough Master\, they strayed from twisting grunge-pop to piano ambience and string-accompanied haze\, in part inspired by Niemi’s background in classical cello and prog rock. Tuning is a different beast. There’s a raw\, guttural\, emotional punch to it — tales of botched romance and misdirected dreams play out above its bed of crunchy guitars and crashing cymbals. “It’s a collection of reflections on the feeling of finally leaving\, on the complexity of relationships\, on what the end of something means\,” say Mauno. \n“Boyhood‘s prog-grunge compositions shun standard verse/chorus structure\, instead coming in intense swells of noisy guitars and drums that morph from one melody to the next. She combines the pounding rhythms and off-key dirges of Nirvana with the atmosphere of a 1960s horror flick soundtrack to create something all the more visceral\, haunting\, and unexpectedly cathartic. It’s especially impressive that she does this as a solo artist who plays all of the instruments on her recordings herself.” Greg Bouchard\, NOISEY \nMontreal’s Helena Deland writes songs that are a testimony of a given time or place\, converting her memories to something that sounds\, in a word\, unforgettable. A myriad of influences filter in and out of her writing\, from ’60’s Parisian pop to indie folk to fuzz rock. She describes her songwriting as a collection of ‘unsent letters\,’ perhaps fueling her self coined genre\, ‘sincere pop.’ Helena captures the unapologetic aspects of womanhood the world needs today\, highlighting powerful femininity in her vocals and refined writing in her unique lyrical choices. Helena will be touring the world over the next year\, promoting the release of her upcoming LP\,Altogether Unaccompanied. \nMEGAPHONO’s Safer Spaces policy is intended to make this event a supportive environment. Her latest solo release ‘Palimpsest’ is a therapeutic reconciliation with her sheltered Chinese-Catholic heritage and the intense classical music training of her childhood. A haunting and challenging experimental-folk album\, it has “a signature sound that alternates between vibrating lullabies and primordial heart-explosions\,” (Discorder)\, drawing comparisons to Björk\, Braids\, and Lhasa. Described by CBC as “a stunning\, colossal work that’s as disconcerting as it is captivating” the album was named #6 in the 2016 Top 30 Albums of The Year by the Toronto Star. \nBrought forth from the depths of the cosmos by Jeremy Costello and further crystallized by Nick Dourado\, Special Costello is a dream vapour that entrances the listener to take time for themselves. The subjects of this experiment take time to listen to the sonic provisions and also the rhythm of their heart. These shows are a space of healing\, a space of love\, of emotion\, of purposeful sadness\, of unhinged bliss and beauty. Those who have been witness to the meditative\, slow moving ballads of Jer and Nick come away feeling light\, thoughtful\, and well loved. \nAn off-shoot of Ottawa art-rock collective Pony Girl\, mal/aimé take the band’s experimental chamber sound and run with it\, combining clarinet\, guitars\, and percussion with synths\, drones and electronics. Yolande Laroche’s soaring clarinet and voice weave in and out of guitarist Julien Dussault’s demented drone patterns\, on top of a bed of synthesizers and electronic percussion created by Jeff Kingsbury. Their immersive live set works in tandem with the vibe of the audience and the sounds of the room\, and often features found noises and thematic vocal samples framed by the trio’s thoughtful ebb and flow. The listener is all but forced to close their eyes and be lost in the synergy of music\, noise\, and the ambient features of the performance space. \nMEGAPHONO’s Safer Spaces policy is intended to make this event a supportive environment. SUMMARY:Mon Doux Saigneur / Novusolis / Outside I'm a Giant [Megaphono 2018]
DESCRIPTION:MEGAPHONO and Sous-Sol 819 present \nOUTSIDE I’M A GIANT\n \nNOVUSOLIS \nMON DOUX SAIGNEUR\n \nat Bar Robo\n692 Somerset St W \npay-what-you-can\nFree with MEGA PASS or FO’SHOWS wristband. \nDoors at 1:00 pm\nall ages / licensed \nFloating down from Quebec’s upper Gatineau\, the haunting ethereal sounds of Outside I’m a Giant carry poetic homage to Leonard Cohen. Jeremi Pierre Caron\, the songwriter of this touring ambient folk band\, drew inspiration from his family’s much-loved river hideaway for many of the songs released in their acclaimed 2017 debut album\, Point Comfort. Combining acoustic guitar\, pedal steel guitar\, violin\, mandolin\, clarinet and harmonica\, this four-piece band creates atmospheric\, richly layered\, heartfelt songs that transport you to a calm and peaceful place. Lingering contemplation of nature and human nature is in abundance here. \nBased in Gatineau & Ottawa\, Zachary Perron and Amanda Lowe have created a new haven of post-rock in the local scene. Zachary steadily builds the music with his intricately charming electric guitar live loops\, while Amanda’s maschine swells and voice sways us into a trance. Together\, they are both haunting\, and enchanting. \nA genuine vehicle for impromptu grooves and point-blank prose\, Mon Doux Saigneur was started on a Montreal balcony in 2014 by Emerik St-Cyr-Labbé\, a native of the Montérégie region. The following year\, he released MONDOUXSAIGNEUR#1\, an unabashedly honest debut EP produced by Jesse Mac Cormack. In 2016\, a series of surprising and stellar performances at the Francouvertes competition brought him to the attention of Grosse Boîte. Towards the end of that same year\, the project’s eponymous LP was recorded at Studio Wild. Mon Doux Saigneur’s songs shine like the start of an inspired personal revolution\, one that brings many surprises in the moment and comfort in the end. \nMEGAPHONO’s Safer Spaces policy is intended to make this event a supportive environment. Notorious for rude stage antics and warehouse parties\, VICE described her as “”fearless and peerless””. Billboard called her a buzzworthy “party starter”. Respect Magazine called her sound “”electrifying and rowdy””. This reputation has elevated her to stages across Europe\, Mexico\, Canada\, and the US. \nRising like a phoenix from the ashes of Toronto experimental band Abstract Random\, comes the force now known as Above Top Secret. SUMMARY:Claude Munson\, Marie-Clo\, Sparklesaurus and Okies
DESCRIPTION:MEGAPHONO and Folk Music Ontario present \nClaude Munson\n \nMarie-Clo\n \nSparklesaurus\n \nOkies\n \nat Irene’s Pub\n885 Bank St \n$10 advance / $12 doors\nFree with MEGA PASS or FO’SHOWS wristband.\nTickets and festival passes available here > https://goo.gl/eVjTpZ \nDoors at 9:00 pm\n19+ / licensed \nOttawa’s Claude Munson writes uninhibited impressionist-folk.\nWhether drenched in crystalline synths or stripped bare\, Munson’s songs tackle modern life and love\nwith radical intimacy. His soaring\, gritty tenor paints vivid pictures of hard promises and ecstatic joys:\natmospheric narratives that unfold\, Rorschach-like.\nIn 2018\, Munson will release “The Silence Came After”\, his second and most fully realized album to\ndate. Equal parts lush and spare\, it marries the naked soul of 70’s era Neil Young\, with Talk Talk’s\nspacious expressionism\, and Krautrock’s motoric rhythms. \nIt was her closeness to nature and never-ending nights spent around a campfire that inspired Marie-Clo to develop her art. Her alternative pop\, with its electronic undercurrent and conscious lyrics\, showcases her deep love of dance\, as well as a mature reflection on the world around her. Her eclectic songs tackle current themes such as politics\, mental health\, and love\, but also conjure up a colourful and enchanted imaginary world. In 2017\, Marie-Clo won TFO’s pan-Canadian search for francophone artists Planète BRBR\, and was given carte blanche to participate at the Granby International Song Festival 2018\, as well as at the Petite-Vallée Song Festival 2018. She celebrated the release of her debut EP Faune November 27 2017 \nLike glitter-infused jelly on toast\, Ottawa’s Sparklesaurus spreads their shimmering sounds. The sounds can be described as living room dream pop – pairing the emotional rawness of garage with the lush tonalities of glam\, set in a low-lit\, carpeted living room. Cut into triangles with the crust left on\, their self-released debut EP\, titled ‘Perennials’\, delves into dark truths about humanity through plant imagery and concentric wordplay – with an undercurrent of gentle optimism. These themes are set amidst a landscape of scaling synths\, swirling guitar tones\, colourful harmonies\, and a stoney\, muscular rhythm section. \nThomas Aguinaga (Drums/Percussions\, Harmonica)\, Sam Gendron (Keyboard) and Marc-Antoine Moisan (Guitar\, Vocals) are an Indie Folk band from Aylmer\, Quebec\, across the river from the no-nonsense\, straight-laced\, won’t-crack-a-smile-at-a-dirty-joke\, capital of Canada. Okies bring together their eclectic individual tastes to form a unique and captivating sound that dips its toes\, testing the waters\, of many different genres. Said to sound much like Alt-J\, Fleet Foxes\, Ben Howard and Passenger\, they prefer to step away from the labels and simply state that they play “honest music.” \nMEGAPHONO’s Safer Spaces policy is intended to make this event a supportive environment. SUMMARY:TRAILS\, Luka and Keturah Johnson [Megaphono 2018]
DESCRIPTION:NAC Presents/CNA Présente\, MEGAPHONO + Lixar present: \nTRAILS with LUKA\, Keturah Johnson \nTRAILS\nTrails is Allie O’Manique\, a young\, prolific songwriter from Ottawa\, Canada who weaves reverb-laden guitars through layers of smoky alto vocals. Trails’ live performances draw the room into a psychedelic haze\, looping vocals and guitars while channeling artists such as Mazzy Star and Beach House. \nTrails has enchanted Canadian audiences at festivals such as MEGAPHONO and Arboretum Festival\, and supported artists such as Tim Hecker\, The Wooden Sky\, Jeremy Gara (Arcade Fire) and The Acorn. She was awarded the MEGAPHONO artist residency in 2017\, and went on to record with Evening Hymns’ Jonas Bonnetta\, with whom she is currently producing her debut full-length album. \n“Leave Her Be” is the first fruit from these recordings; a beautiful but painfully raw recounting of a difficult relationship\, delivered with the confidence of a mid-career artist. At 18\, Allie is far from it; for Trails\, the best is surely yet to come. \nLUKA\nLUKA is nylon string poet-crooner Luke Kuplowsky and his gentle rock n’ rollers. In their first two albums\, Calling All Cats Black (2013)\, and Summon Up a Monkey King (2016)\, Kuplowsky has developed a vocal and lyrical style of opposites: deadpan spoken-word delivery transitions into a rich melodic tenor; poetic musings fall alongside conversational and plain-spoken observations. His latest work What Kind of Animal (2017) was recorded live in a single session and showcases eight poetic works that unravel questions of self-doubt\, companionship\, integrity and faith amidst sonic extremes of patient stillness and careening noise. \n \nKeturah Johnson\nKeturah Johnson is an artist who traverses the deep caverns of her mind through music. Since 2009\, Keturah has made a name for herself in Ottawa making music that resonates with audiences of varied tastes. \nKeturah Johnson’s voice is as electrifying in the studio as it is live—the sheer impact of her songwriting and abilities cannot be understated. If there is a defining aspect of Keturah’s music that must be highlighted\, it is her ability to entrance listeners with her stage presence\, profound lyricism\, and unforgettable vocals. She commands unwavering attention until the last note is played and final lyric is sung.

SUMMARY:Michael Rault\, Expanda Fuzz\, Sunshine & The Blue Moon and Queen of Swords [Megaphono 2018]
DESCRIPTION:MEGAPHONO and CKCU FM 93.1 present \nMichael Rault\n \nExpanda Fuzz\n \nSUNSHINE & THE BLUE MOON\n \nQueen Of Swords\n \nat House of Targ\n1077 Bank Street \n$10 advance / $12 doors\nFree with MEGA PASS or FO’SHOWS wristband.\nAdvance tickets available in stores at The Record Centre\, Vertigo Records\, both locations of Compact Music\, and online here > https://goo.gl/eVjTpZ \nDoors at 9:00 pm\n19+ / licensed \nMichael Rault is a Toronto based singer\, guitarist and songwriter fronting his own eponymously named band. A gifted multi- instrumentalist and arranger\, his hooky blend of pop rock refracts an evolution of guitar based music through the ages. An era-defying mischievousness defines his synthesis of jukebox R’n’B\, and acid psych as refracted through the experience of an adolescence spent idolizing the clever craftsmanship of the Beatles and the wiggy New Orleans textures of Dr. John in equal measure. \nExpanda Fuzz was conceived attempting to rip apart a Pink Floyd song with a distorted bass\, a fuzz-driven guitar through a ripped speaker cabinet and a Roland 404 sampler. The result is a unique brand of catchy\, droney\, post-punk songs that hook heavily into a psych-garage sound. Think Kim Deal fronting the Velvet Underground\, or Mary Timony jamming with Suicide. In 2017\, Expanda Fuzz released 2 EPs\, “At War With Summer” and “The Last Of The Who Heads”. “Who Heads” reached #1 on CHUO’s weekly charts. They are currently preparing their first full-length release expected in 2018. “This two-piece would be equally at home playing to the beard-strokers at a Warhol Factory Party as they would be ignoring their neighbour’s angry knocks for making too much racket in the garage”. – Sled Island \nSunshine & the Blue Moon choose to experiment not only with sound\, but mood as well\, expanding their aural landscape beyond common signifiers. Blending influences and ideas from across genres and eras spanning from early blues\, folk and country\, to 60’s rock and soul\, through eclectic 90’s grooves. One listen may place you on a rural road with your sweetheart\, feeling the summer breeze as it rolls through the trembling leaves. While another might place you in a pulsing dream wanting nothing more than to escape the hot city streets\, to shake and dance the through the night. \nQueen Of Swords is the new project from Aerin Fogel\, who played previously in The Bitters with Ben Cook (Fucked Up/Young Guv/Bad Actors Records etc). The Bitters released records with Captured Tracks\, Mexican Summer\, Sacred Bones\, and Release The Bats\, and had a period of touring and festival appearances including SXSW\, NXNE\, and Woodsist/Captured Tracks Fest. \nMEGAPHONO’s Safer Spaces policy is intended to make this event a supportive environment. SUMMARY:Daniel Romano's Ancient Shapes\, Nap Eyes\, Steven Lambke [Megaphono 2018]
DESCRIPTION:MEGAPHONO and You’ve Changed Records present \nDaniel Romano’s Ancient Shapes\n \nNap Eyes\n \nSteven Lambke\n \nat Brasserie de L’Ile\n167 Eddy St\, Hull \n$10 advance / $12 at doors\nFree with MEGA PASS or FO’SHOWS wristband.\nAdvance tickets available in stores at The Record Centre\, Vertigo Records\, both locations of Compact Music\, and online here > https://goo.gl/eVjTpZ \nDoors at 8:00 pm\n18+/ licensed \nDaniel Romano’s Ancient Shapes is the sound of punk rock\, power pop\, and psychedelic garage. It’s a solo recording project and a ripping and well-dressed live band. It’s a collage of spontaneous poetry and repurposed graphic design. The foul debris of late capitalism fuels alien engines. A hummingbird sits on barbed wire. Flowers bloom between the cracks. Insects crawl across the moon. Hopelessness and hope form a perfect sphere. \nHailing from Nova Scotia\, Nap Eyes makes crooked\, literate guitar pop refracted through the gray Halifax rain. Recorded live to tape with no overdubs\, their songs are equal parts shambling and sophisticated\, with one eye on the dirt and one trained on the starry firmament\, inhabiting a skewed world where odes to NASA and the Earth’s magnetic field coexist easily with lyrics about insomnia and drinking too much. \nSteven Lambke sets poetic words to minimal\, guitar based music. The song is a human ritual\, enacted and re-enacted in the void. Love is a word hung before the infinite space beyond the reach of our words. It sways like a curtain on the light breeze. Steven Lambke and Daniel Romano co-founded You’ve Changed Records in 2009. Steven Lambke is also a member of the Constantines: young hearts be free tonight. \nMEGAPHONO’s Safer Spaces policy is intended to make this event a supportive environment.
