SUMMARY:Claude Munson\, Marie-Clo\, Sparklesaurus and Okies
DESCRIPTION:MEGAPHONO and Folk Music Ontario present \nClaude Munson\n \nMarie-Clo\n \nSparklesaurus\n \nOkies\n \nat Irene’s Pub\n885 Bank St \n$10 advance / $12 doors\nFree with MEGA PASS or FO’SHOWS wristband.\nTickets and festival passes available here > https://goo.gl/eVjTpZ \nDoors at 9:00 pm\n19+ / licensed \nOttawa’s Claude Munson writes uninhibited impressionist-folk.\nWhether drenched in crystalline synths or stripped bare\, Munson’s songs tackle modern life and love\nwith radical intimacy. His soaring\, gritty tenor paints vivid pictures of hard promises and ecstatic joys:\natmospheric narratives that unfold\, Rorschach-like.\nIn 2018\, Munson will release “The Silence Came After”\, his second and most fully realized album to\ndate. Equal parts lush and spare\, it marries the naked soul of 70’s era Neil Young\, with Talk Talk’s\nspacious expressionism\, and Krautrock’s motoric rhythms. \nIt was her closeness to nature and never-ending nights spent around a campfire that inspired Marie-Clo to develop her art. Her alternative pop\, with its electronic undercurrent and conscious lyrics\, showcases her deep love of dance\, as well as a mature reflection on the world around her. Her eclectic songs tackle current themes such as politics\, mental health\, and love\, but also conjure up a colourful and enchanted imaginary world. In 2017\, Marie-Clo won TFO’s pan-Canadian search for francophone artists Planète BRBR\, and was given carte blanche to participate at the Granby International Song Festival 2018\, as well as at the Petite-Vallée Song Festival 2018. She celebrated the release of her debut EP Faune November 27 2017 \nLike glitter-infused jelly on toast\, Ottawa’s Sparklesaurus spreads their shimmering sounds. The sounds can be described as living room dream pop – pairing the emotional rawness of garage with the lush tonalities of glam\, set in a low-lit\, carpeted living room. Cut into triangles with the crust left on\, their self-released debut EP\, titled ‘Perennials’\, delves into dark truths about humanity through plant imagery and concentric wordplay – with an undercurrent of gentle optimism. These themes are set amidst a landscape of scaling synths\, swirling guitar tones\, colourful harmonies\, and a stoney\, muscular rhythm section. \nThomas Aguinaga (Drums/Percussions\, Harmonica)\, Sam Gendron (Keyboard) and Marc-Antoine Moisan (Guitar\, Vocals) are an Indie Folk band from Aylmer\, Quebec\, across the river from the no-nonsense\, straight-laced\, won’t-crack-a-smile-at-a-dirty-joke\, capital of Canada. Okies bring together their eclectic individual tastes to form a unique and captivating sound that dips its toes\, testing the waters\, of many different genres. Said to sound much like Alt-J\, Fleet Foxes\, Ben Howard and Passenger\, they prefer to step away from the labels and simply state that they play “honest music.” \nMEGAPHONO’s Safer Spaces policy is intended to make this event a supportive environment. SUMMARY:TRAILS\, Luka and Keturah Johnson [Megaphono 2018]
DESCRIPTION:NAC Presents/CNA Présente\, MEGAPHONO + Lixar present: \nTRAILS with LUKA\, Keturah Johnson \nTRAILS\nTrails is Allie O’Manique\, a young\, prolific songwriter from Ottawa\, Canada who weaves reverb-laden guitars through layers of smoky alto vocals. Trails’ live performances draw the room into a psychedelic haze\, looping vocals and guitars while channeling artists such as Mazzy Star and Beach House. \nTrails has enchanted Canadian audiences at festivals such as MEGAPHONO and Arboretum Festival\, and supported artists such as Tim Hecker\, The Wooden Sky\, Jeremy Gara (Arcade Fire) and The Acorn. She was awarded the MEGAPHONO artist residency in 2017\, and went on to record with Evening Hymns’ Jonas Bonnetta\, with whom she is currently producing her debut full-length album. \n“Leave Her Be” is the first fruit from these recordings; a beautiful but painfully raw recounting of a difficult relationship\, delivered with the confidence of a mid-career artist. At 18\, Allie is far from it; for Trails\, the best is surely yet to come. \nLUKA\nLUKA is nylon string poet-crooner Luke Kuplowsky and his gentle rock n’ rollers. In their first two albums\, Calling All Cats Black (2013)\, and Summon Up a Monkey King (2016)\, Kuplowsky has developed a vocal and lyrical style of opposites: deadpan spoken-word delivery transitions into a rich melodic tenor; poetic musings fall alongside conversational and plain-spoken observations. His latest work What Kind of Animal (2017) was recorded live in a single session and showcases eight poetic works that unravel questions of self-doubt\, companionship\, integrity and faith amidst sonic extremes of patient stillness and careening noise. \n \nKeturah Johnson\nKeturah Johnson is an artist who traverses the deep caverns of her mind through music. Since 2009\, Keturah has made a name for herself in Ottawa making music that resonates with audiences of varied tastes. \nKeturah Johnson’s voice is as electrifying in the studio as it is live—the sheer impact of her songwriting and abilities cannot be understated. If there is a defining aspect of Keturah’s music that must be highlighted\, it is her ability to entrance listeners with her stage presence\, profound lyricism\, and unforgettable vocals. She commands unwavering attention until the last note is played and final lyric is sung.

SUMMARY:Michael Rault\, Expanda Fuzz\, Sunshine & The Blue Moon and Queen of Swords [Megaphono 2018]
DESCRIPTION:MEGAPHONO and CKCU FM 93.1 present \nMichael Rault\n \nExpanda Fuzz\n \nSUNSHINE & THE BLUE MOON\n \nQueen Of Swords\n \nat House of Targ\n1077 Bank Street \n$10 advance / $12 doors\nFree with MEGA PASS or FO’SHOWS wristband.\nAdvance tickets available in stores at The Record Centre\, Vertigo Records\, both locations of Compact Music\, and online here > https://goo.gl/eVjTpZ \nDoors at 9:00 pm\n19+ / licensed \nMichael Rault is a Toronto based singer\, guitarist and songwriter fronting his own eponymously named band. A gifted multi- instrumentalist and arranger\, his hooky blend of pop rock refracts an evolution of guitar based music through the ages. An era-defying mischievousness defines his synthesis of jukebox R’n’B\, and acid psych as refracted through the experience of an adolescence spent idolizing the clever craftsmanship of the Beatles and the wiggy New Orleans textures of Dr. John in equal measure. \nExpanda Fuzz was conceived attempting to rip apart a Pink Floyd song with a distorted bass\, a fuzz-driven guitar through a ripped speaker cabinet and a Roland 404 sampler. The result is a unique brand of catchy\, droney\, post-punk songs that hook heavily into a psych-garage sound. Think Kim Deal fronting the Velvet Underground\, or Mary Timony jamming with Suicide. In 2017\, Expanda Fuzz released 2 EPs\, “At War With Summer” and “The Last Of The Who Heads”. “Who Heads” reached #1 on CHUO’s weekly charts. They are currently preparing their first full-length release expected in 2018. “This two-piece would be equally at home playing to the beard-strokers at a Warhol Factory Party as they would be ignoring their neighbour’s angry knocks for making too much racket in the garage”. – Sled Island \nSunshine & the Blue Moon choose to experiment not only with sound\, but mood as well\, expanding their aural landscape beyond common signifiers. Blending influences and ideas from across genres and eras spanning from early blues\, folk and country\, to 60’s rock and soul\, through eclectic 90’s grooves. One listen may place you on a rural road with your sweetheart\, feeling the summer breeze as it rolls through the trembling leaves. While another might place you in a pulsing dream wanting nothing more than to escape the hot city streets\, to shake and dance the through the night. \nQueen Of Swords is the new project from Aerin Fogel\, who played previously in The Bitters with Ben Cook (Fucked Up/Young Guv/Bad Actors Records etc). The Bitters released records with Captured Tracks\, Mexican Summer\, Sacred Bones\, and Release The Bats\, and had a period of touring and festival appearances including SXSW\, NXNE\, and Woodsist/Captured Tracks Fest. \nMEGAPHONO’s Safer Spaces policy is intended to make this event a supportive environment. SUMMARY:Daniel Romano's Ancient Shapes\, Nap Eyes\, Steven Lambke [Megaphono 2018]
DESCRIPTION:MEGAPHONO and You’ve Changed Records present \nDaniel Romano’s Ancient Shapes\n \nNap Eyes\n \nSteven Lambke\n \nat Brasserie de L’Ile\n167 Eddy St\, Hull \n$10 advance / $12 at doors\nFree with MEGA PASS or FO’SHOWS wristband.\nAdvance tickets available in stores at The Record Centre\, Vertigo Records\, both locations of Compact Music\, and online here > https://goo.gl/eVjTpZ \nDoors at 8:00 pm\n18+/ licensed \nDaniel Romano’s Ancient Shapes is the sound of punk rock\, power pop\, and psychedelic garage. It’s a solo recording project and a ripping and well-dressed live band. It’s a collage of spontaneous poetry and repurposed graphic design. The foul debris of late capitalism fuels alien engines. A hummingbird sits on barbed wire. Flowers bloom between the cracks. Insects crawl across the moon. Hopelessness and hope form a perfect sphere. \nHailing from Nova Scotia\, Nap Eyes makes crooked\, literate guitar pop refracted through the gray Halifax rain. Recorded live to tape with no overdubs\, their songs are equal parts shambling and sophisticated\, with one eye on the dirt and one trained on the starry firmament\, inhabiting a skewed world where odes to NASA and the Earth’s magnetic field coexist easily with lyrics about insomnia and drinking too much. \nSteven Lambke sets poetic words to minimal\, guitar based music. The song is a human ritual\, enacted and re-enacted in the void. Love is a word hung before the infinite space beyond the reach of our words. It sways like a curtain on the light breeze. Steven Lambke and Daniel Romano co-founded You’ve Changed Records in 2009. Steven Lambke is also a member of the Constantines: young hearts be free tonight. \nMEGAPHONO’s Safer Spaces policy is intended to make this event a supportive environment. The sludgy surf rock tunes captured on wax for the first time were inspired by actual events\, such as the struggle of making it to brunch for noon and how it feels to brave a waterslide in a bikini. Dooner Nooner will rip your face off and put it back together albeit a bit messed up. Best enjoyed with a hot pizza and a cool breeze. \nIn Lake Urmia\, Elsa Mirzaei and Kat Pavelic make sad songs to dance to. Tangled in hypnotic synth tones and a tug between the East and the West\, the band’s careless and catastrophic moods unearth sequences of day-dreams\, diaspora\, and queer identity.” \nMEGAPHONO’s Safer Spaces policy is intended to make this event a supportive environment. SUMMARY:Blakdenim\, Nuven\, Mas Aya\, King Kimbit & Black Wax and Budi [Megaphono 2018]
DESCRIPTION:MEGAPHONO and Lixar present \nBLAKDENIM\n\nNuven\n \nMAS AYA\n \nKing Kimbit & Black Wax\n \nBudi\n \nat Triple Seven\n75 St Redempteur St\,Hull \n$15 at doors\nFree with MEGA PASS or FO’SHOWS wristband.\nPasses available online here > https://goo.gl/eVjTpZ \nDoors at 8:00 pm\nall ages / licensed \nFormed in a basement in Ottawa\, Ontario\, in late 2012\, BLAKDENIM blends genres like no Canadian act today. The group fuses hiphop\, funk\, rock and soul with lyrical content that ranges from identity issues to daily issues\, like picking yourself up after a bad day\, perseverance\, self-esteem and hope. Influenced by artists like The Roots to Earth\, Wind and Fire\, there’s no shortage of musical expertise in this 8-piece line-up. \nNuven is the electronic outlet for the solo work of brazilian producer Gustavo Teixeira. Based in Sao Paulo\, his experiments with noise\, loop pedals and synths led the former guitarist to an ethereal and minimal atmosphere\, building inventive tracks around layers of internet samples\, home-recordings and ripped vinyl. Nuven has released a debut EP Choice of a Fiction (2015) and a full-length “”Partir”” in 2016\, when he performed at Primavera Sound festival in Spain. His live performances brings up a refreshingly and creative approach on the songs compositions\, dismembering or adding instruments\, improvising arrangements\, delivering an earwarm experience. \nBorn out of an exploration of combining and colliding cultures and ideas\, Mas Aya is the solo project of Toronto-based percussionist Brandon Miguel Valdivia (Not the Wind\, Not the Flag\, Lido Pimienta\, Above Top Secret). Mas Aya is a lively and powerful percussion\, flute and voice stage show\, inviting communities to cast off the shroud of commodity-based living to empower themselves and each other through music\, meditation\, dance and celebration. \nThe internationally-acclaimed all-around artist King Kimbit\, originally Nguyễn Anh Thư\, was born and raised on unceded Algonquin territory to Vietnamese boat people. She has performed and recorded in Jamaica and all over North America\, sharing love and knowledge\, which she believes are connected by similar roots. King has recently released her debut double-disc album LIFE LESSONS POETICALLY (with help from Canada Council for the Arts and the City of Ottawa). \nBUDI is the ever-mutating solo act from Nick Dourado\, a multi-faceted musician known across the country for his work with a very healthy variety of ensembles\, dipping into poppier waters with Century Egg and Special Costello\, and covering collaborative spontaneous explorations with EDDY and xxvii. BUDI exists in formations that range from one-man sampler & sax action to bustling large band activity that embody a volatile\, different-every-time ethos that’s more about Dourado’s own innate impulses than working within a reified soundworld or adopting a character. \nMEGAPHONO’s Safer Spaces policy is intended to make this event a supportive environment. It layers artificial enstasy with bouts of unsteady euphoria and romanticism. Brooding rhythms and precise noise from this Hull QC. outfit underline film noir imagery and auto-fictional narratives. \nRenowned for their cross-genre experimentalism\, unabashedly unique\, WHOOP-Szo is a wild fusion of folk\, metal\, pop\, grunge\, and even classical musical stylings. Though radically diverse in tone\, WHOOP-Szo has crafted their many sounds well\, and are able to create immersive musical tapestries that evoke deep emotions while conveying troubling stories of civil unrest via layered harmonies\, churning guitar\, gritty synth\, and a whole psychedelic plethora of other noise. \nMEGAPHONO’s Safer Spaces policy is intended to make this event a supportive environment. SUMMARY:Kroy @ NAC
DESCRIPTION:Camille Poliquin was discovered on the Quebec music scene when she sang backing vocals on David Giguère and Jason Bajada’s albums. In 2012\, she proved she had much more to offer than a pretty voice when she wrote her first songs under the alias of KROY. \nFour songs were released on Bandcamp in 2014\, and she soon gained attention for her spellbinding voice\, with its distinctive\, crystal-clear tone. \nKROY was then dubbed the “next Montreal indie pop sensation” by cultural magazine Voir. She opened for Coeur de pirate and AaRon\, in addition to performing on various stages in Quebec\, Europe\, and the United States. \nThen came an encounter that would really change the course of things. Camille met Laurence Lafond-Beaulne\, with whom she formed Milk & Bone\, a minimalist electro outfit that rapidly made a name for itself in Quebec and abroad. Magazines such as Vice and Libération praised the atmospheric pop of the duo’s first album\, Little Mourning. \nBetween Milk & Bone tours\, Camille carries on her solo work influenced by spacey trip-hop (Goldfrapp\, Portishead) and inventive modern pop (Vampire Weekend\, Youth Lagoon). An “Artist to watch in 2016” according to Noisey\, KROY released her first full-length album in 2016.

SUMMARY:Heavy Bell & Raphael Weinroth-Browne
DESCRIPTION:Heavy Bell will be performing @ Pressed in Ottawa on February 3rd in support of their new album\, By Grand Central Station. The songs for the album were written as a tribute to the 1945 novel\, By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept\, by Ottawa-born author Elizabeth Smart. The band consists of an 8-piece chamber ensemble (French Horn\, Trumpet\, Cello\, Violin\, Double Bass\, Piano\, Guitar and Percussion). The night will also feature readings by Ottawa’s Kate Hurman and Kristina Watt. \nTickets: $10.00 ADV\, $12.00 DOOR \nMatt Peters: vocals\, piano\, guitar\nTom Keenan: vocals\, guitar\, piano\, banjo\nJulie Penner: violin\, vocals\nAlyssa Ramsay: cello\, vocals\nNatalie Bohrn: double bass\, vocals\nAja McMillan: trumpet\, vocals\nMicajah Sturgess: french horn\, vocals\nDerek Allard: drums\, percussion \nReaders: Kate Hurman and Kristina Watt\n———————————————————-\nHeavy Bell is a duo made up of Royal Canoe frontman Matt Peters and actor/singer-songwriter Tom Keenan. Previous projects include the music for the stage productions of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale and Richard II.\nBy Grand Central Station is a song cycle based on Elizabeth Smart’s novel By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept. Originally published in 1945\, the book has been called “one of the half-dozen masterpieces of poetic prose in the world.” It is based on events in Smart’s own life\, who as a young woman fell deeply in love with a married man\, and contrived to bear his child. The story is told through emotion rather than action: her inner world is enormous\, tempestuous. It takes over the world around her and tosses her like a boat on the sea.\nThis album is a paean to the novel: a song of praise and triumph. We were struck so deeply by its incredible words that we had to set them to music. We chose passages that provide an impressionistic view of the woman’s inner journey; we let the flow of the words dictate the form of the songs\, rather than adhering to standard structures.\nWe arranged the songs for a chamber ensemble in order to reflect Smart’s vibrant humanity\, and to express a great range of emotion confined to an intimate space. Whereas the initial composition took only a few days\, the scoring took place over the next several years\, whenever we found time between Matt’s work with Royal Canoe and Tom’s work as an actor and singer-songwriter.\nAt the core of the songs are the unison voices of Matt and Tom. Surrounding these are piano\, guitar\, strings\, brass\, woodwinds\, percussion\, and a choir. The performers include members of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra\, Begonia\, Chic Gamine\, Royal Canoe\, Slattern\, and Imaginary Cities. Two of the tracks feature Elizabeth Smart herself reading passages from her novel. These were recorded almost forty years after she wrote it: a mature woman embodying the joy and pain of her younger self. Her voice reminds the listener where this music came from. \n \n———————————————————-\nRaphael Weinroth-Browne (Ottawa)\nCellist and composer Raphael Weinroth-Browne is rapidly making a name for himself as an exceptionally versatile musician in Canada and internationally. With his groundbreaking duo\, The Visit\, Raphael has toured through Europe and played major festivals such as Wave Gotik Treffen (Leipzig\, Germany) and 21C (Toronto). In addition to performing with The Visit and as a solo artist\, he is also a member of acclaimed chamber trio Musk Ox and East-meets-West duo Kamancello. Most recently\, he joined the Norwegian progressive rock/metal band Leprous for a European headliner tour spanning 18 countries. \nRaphael has played on over 70 studio albums. His work as a collaborator and session musician is extensive\, ranging from performances with Pauline Oliveros and Ernst Reijseger to studio recordings with Lawrence Gowan (Styx) and Leprous. His inventive cello ensemble and amplified cello arrangements of metal and prog songs have been praised and reposted online by the likes of Opeth\, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree)\, and Chris Adler (Lamb of God\, Megadeth).

SUMMARY:Modern Hyenas
DESCRIPTION:Natalie Bruvels / Joyce Crago / Wendy Nichol \nPlease join The Sussex Contemporary for their first reception of 2018 from 6-9pm on Friday\, February 2nd!\nTheir first show of the year features the work of artists Natalie Bruvels\, Joyce Crago and Wendy Nichol. Painting\, photography and sculpture combine for this thought-provoking and a contemporary group show of emerging Canadian artists. \nModern Hyenas features works by artists Natalie Bruvels\, Joyce Crago and Wendy Nichol. As modern hyenas\, these three artists embody the archetype of scavenger in their search for artistic inspiration and material. Natalie Bruvels\, a painter\, is finishing a longstanding series of work wherein she reuses discarded canvas material to incorporate into her own oil paintings. Old surfaces find rebirth. Photo-based artist Joyce Crago exemplifies the resourcefulness of the hyena\, a peaceful but strong scavenger who subsists of what is left behind. Crago collects refuse\, skillfully arranging it into photographed compositions. Nichol works with her chosen medium\, raw clay\, molding and working. Like the hyena\, she works with her body as an instrument – with dexterity and graces her works of both strength and fragility create new life.

SUMMARY:Galapagos\, Swim Team and Greathunter
DESCRIPTION:Galapagos are kicking off 2018 in style with the release of their new EP Even This Glow with special guests Swim Team and GREATHUNTER. \nDoors at 8PM.\n10$/PWYC\nNo one turned away for lack of funds\nAA/19+ licensed \nGalapagos play sugary sweet indie and is one of the Ottawa’s best kept secrets. However\, the secret is slowly getting out. \n“If you haven’t had a chance to listen to these guys\, I can say you’re missing out on something great.” Jess from PunKanormal Activity. \nSwim Team released their debut EP in May and have been spreading their tunes all over this town and province ever since. From the pool to the stage\, they are Ottawa’s favourite surf emo band. \nGREATHUNTER is a new musical project from Andrew Grosvenor (Those Gulls) and Leigh Newton (The Sun Through A Telescope). The music blends choral vocals\, live instrumentation\, including string\, brass and woodwind arrangements\, over programmed synths and percussion. The result is a hybrid of dream pop\, electro\, shoegaze and chamber pop.
