SUMMARY:Everyone is Someone
DESCRIPTION:Patrick Gordon Framing presents a painting exhibition by Diane Hiscox \nThis show is in conjunction with Patrick Gordon Framing’s 15th year in business! \nShow to remain up until the end of 2017 \nThis exhibition consists of more than 60 small-format paintings\, depicting figures which are immediately identifiable as people (and sometimes their dogs) who live on sidewalks. Although circumstances determine that these people are often subject to the public gaze\, there is reference made – in the suggestion of wallpaper\, and in the figures’ assemblage of belongings – to the notion of “home.” Most of the figures\, if you can see their faces\, are asleep\, or are looking away\, choosing where to engage their gaze\, maintaining the privacy we expect in our homes. Some of the figures are dogs\, who may represent intimate companionship and/or protection for their human companions. The paintings are crafted with great intimacy\, with the intent to draw the viewer in\, to engage with the works in an intimate way\, with materials – oil paint and precious-metal leaf – that are historically reserved for prestigious or sacred subject matter. \n“Everyone is Someone” reminds us that each of us are precious\, whether we live in a sleeping bag\, a box\, or a mansion. Any one of us might be one or two bad choices or calamities from being homeless. It is also a reminder that the most holy people often chose to live in dire poverty. Finally it is a critique of a society that tolerates a dire inequity of resources. \nThe source images are harvested from the internet\, many of them from Canadian cities. I have endeavoured to credit and obtain permissions for the source images wherever possible. Any errors or omissions in attribution are inadvertent and are my sole responsibility. \nPatrick Gordon Framing Studio\n160 Elm St\, Ottawa\, Ontario K1R6N5

SUMMARY:Nomadic Massive
DESCRIPTION:5 à 7 party with NOMADIC MASSIVE\nCity Room / 6pm\nFREE\n\nMontreal’s own Nomadic Massive has firmly established itself as a group of premier performers and skilled musicians in a genre that has evolved from its early days of two turntables and a microphone. \nThese musical nomads represent an open-minded hip-hop which finds its inspiration in the traditions of the past; combining live instrumentation\, samples\, and a wide array of vocal styles. This multilingual\, multicultural\, super-group has become synonymous with energetic and crowd-moving live shows. \nAs the group’s ongoing explorations open up new ways to interpret a musical style that has traditionally been marginalized\, the “more” that has always existed in the hip-hop movement is revealed in everything that is Nomadic Massive.

SUMMARY:Fire Queen & Novusolis
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate CHUO FM!\nThey make great radio all year long and rarely take the time to stop and appreciate what we do so we are throwing parties four Thursdays in a row at The Record Centre! \nThursday November 23rd \nFire Queen (Ottawa\, ON)\nhttps://soundcloud.com/firequeenband/no-control \nRaw emotions\, drum machines\, synths and the swells of FX pedals combine while creating a hybrid frenzy that has been described as cosmic club music. Fire Queen throw caution to the wind and soars to new heights with every performance leaving piles of ashes and feverish symptoms that result in body contortion. \n+ \nNovusolis (Ottawa/Gatineau) \nBased in Gatineau & Ottawa\, Zachary Perron and Amanda Lowe have created a new haven of post-rock in the local scene. Zachary steadily builds the music with his intricately charming electric guitar and baritone loops\, while Amanda’s voice and maschine swells sways us into a trance. Together\, they are both haunting\, and enchanting. \nThe Record Centre\n1099 Wellington St W. \nDoors at 6 pm\nPWYC – Support the bands!\nAll Ages! \nhttp://chuo.fm/support\nhttp://www.gofundme.com/chuofm \nWe have a unique community powered\, listener supported approach to radio. CHUO 89.1 FM provides hyper-local\, independent\, and diverse programming unparalleled in the city. We are an independent bilingual\, community station broadcasting on the FM airwaves since May 31st\, 1991. We are a small not-for-profit organization with two full-time\, one part-time and three student staff members. SUMMARY:Choose the Answer that Best Describes You by Hannah Evans
DESCRIPTION:Vernissage: Thursday\, November 16 from 6-8pm\nOn View: November 16-December 25\n1255 Wellington Street West (above Thyme and Again) \nChoose the Answer that Best Describes You is a body of work that explores identity\, the “self” and the idea of self-fulfilling prophecies. Photographic images paired with text aim to portray the complex relationship between an individual and their self-image. \nOf the many self-administered personality tests available on the Internet today\, most are based on the popular Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. They are designed to reveal aspects of a person’s character or personality traits\, categorizing individuals into one of 16 types. Finding the test\, and subsequently her “type” (INFP – the abbreviation standing for Introversion\, iNtuition\, Feeling and Perception)\, the artist felt the statements becoming facts\, personality no longer a fluid mystery. Is it harmful to believe that behaviours are predetermined in some way? Do we allow these statements to dictate us? \nHannah Evans is a photo-based artist living in Ottawa.

SUMMARY:Walrus\, WHOOP-Szo & Shadowhand
DESCRIPTION:LIVE! on Elgin Presents: Walrus\, With WHOOP-Szo & Shadowhand \nNovember 15th\n220 Elgin st. 2nd Floor\nDoors at 8pm| Showtime at 9pm\n$10 Advanced | $12 at the door \nWalrus:\nWalrus is comprised of four members channeling their inner psychedelia\, with songs that range from trance to surf. Their music will adhere to all levels of inebriation or consciousness. Walrus takes you swiftly into a dream you’ll nd yourself never wanting to wake up from. Goo goo ga’joob. \n“The band somehow mix gentle\, Brian Wilson vocal melodies and orchestrations with out-of-the- blue punk thrash parts that keep listeners guessing. The high\, winsome vocals and chiming 12- string Rickenbacker certainly conjured late ‘60s cloudy folk- pop\, but the rest of the band infused the songs with sharp edges. Some of it recalled the Sadies\, and the musicians in Walrus are certainly in the same league.”\n— Vish Khanna\, Exclaim!\n \nWHOOP-Szo:\nRenowned for their cross-genre experimentalism\, unabashedly unique\, WHOOP-Szo is a wild fusion of folk\, metal\, pop\, grunge\, and even classical musical stylings. Though radically diverse in tone\, WHOOP-Szo has crafted their many sounds well\, and are able to create immersive musical tapestries that evoke deep emotions while conveying troubling stories of civil unrest via layered harmonies\, churning guitar\, gritty synth\, and a whole psychedelic plethora of other noise.\n \nShadowhand:\nFloating in and out of dreams and dances with sidewalks and skylines. Shadowhand is folk songs sang with a ghost-like soul.Starting as a recording project in the fall of 2016\, members of Lost To The River\, How Far To Mexico\, and Winchester Warm join to make this new Ottawa band. Debut EP coming soon.

SUMMARY:Boogat @ Mercury Lounge
DESCRIPTION:Mercury Lounge presents\nBoogat – World Music Juno Winner 2016\nAlbum Release party “San Cristobal Baile Inn”\nFriday\, November 10th \n“San Cristobal Baile Inn” is Boogat’s third album\, written entirely in Spanish. It brings him back to a more urban and electronic sound with more rap and reggaeton flavors. Boogat’s new album is danceable\, uplifting and party oriented\, fitting with the general audience’s expectations of what Latin music is\, while still remaining politically charged. \nSan Cristobal (St. Christopher) is the patron of the travellers and the album is a celebration of immigrants and travellers at large. Cristobal’s “Inn” symbolizes the hotel we are all travelling through for a brief moment. \nThe album was written during the year that Boogat had spent living in Mexico’s capital DF in search of his own personal connection to his parent’s culture. His mom being from Mexico\, he wanted to bring his family to the city\, explore its neighbourhoods\, its music and its subcultures. While doing so he connected with the diaspora of international Latin musicians who congregate in the metropolis\, making Mexico the number one city for Latin music.\n \nDoors at 8pm / Live show at 9pm \n$12 in advance online at www.mercurylounge.com\nmore at the door

SUMMARY:Manon Labrosse and Jillian McDonald
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, November 7\, from 7PM to midnight\nOpening reception \nLaunch of Desire Change: Contemporary Feminist Art in Canada \n► Food prepared by Chloé Berlanga\n► Music by DJ Glory Hull \nFree admission / Free parking / Cash bar \n— \nHow to Paint Death According to Lucy \n“Who knows how many trees there were on the cliff just before Lucy disappeared? Who counted? Maybe there was one more\, afterwards.” — Margaret Atwood\, Death by Landscape \nHow to Paint Death According to Lucy explores our need to see what isn’t there and our relationship with the wilderness\, be it from being connected or disconnected. Inspired by a short story by Margaret Atwood titled Death by Landscape\, the landscapes are meant to have a polarizing effect of restlessness and subdued acceptance. In addition\, it considers the idea of metempsychosis\, transition\, and the possibility of an “in-between” world where The Wilderness rules and we have to assimilate by becoming rooted in nature. \n— \nManon Labrosse is a Franco-Ontarian artist from Northern Ontario (Canada). She currently lives in the Outaouais region in Quebec. She studied painting at the University of Ottawa. Labrosse’s practice is based on experiences in nature: her painting style plays on memory\, using her experiences as an adult\, documentation of the landscape and an unavoidable connection to growing up in Northern Ontario to create conflicting landscapes of bright colours and dark neutral tones. \n/ / / / / / / \nCrystal Lake \nIn Crystal Lake\, McDonald exhibits recent work in video\, drawing\, and prints that feature northern landscapes\, paranormal visions\, and folklore — both real and imagined. Local actors\, glowing rocks\, fog\, or flags are characters in a visual narrative. Premiering at AXENÉO7\, her video Crystal Lake (2017) — filmed on Canada’s Georgian Bay\, whose 30\,000 islands are populated by summer cottagers. Signs of cottage life were removed from video footage and the shores and waterways appear in more natural forms. The Rock and the True Believers (2015)\, was shot along the north and east coasts of Newfoundland; in it\, icebergs\, whales\, boats\, and mummers in disguise stand among apparitions. Birds: After Audubon and Hitchcock (2015)\, a drawing on cut paper\, features birds from Audubon’s Birds of North America redrawn and configured in a swarm\, to reference Hitchcock’s film of the same name. \n— \nJillian McDonald is a Canadian artist living in New York (USA) where she teaches video and performance art at Pace University. Solo shows and projects include the Esker Foundation in Calgary\, Air Circulation in New York\, and Centre Clark in Montréal (Canada). Her work was featured on The Whitney Museum’s Artport in New York\, at The Edith Russ Haus for Media Art in Oldenbourg (Germany)\, The Sundance Film Festival in Utah (USA)\, and New Media Space in New Westminster (Canada). A 2013 feature length radio documentary by Paul Kennedy on CBC’s IDEAS profiles her work\, which has also been reviewed in The New York Times and Canadian Art. Critical discussion appears in books including The Transatlantic Zombie (2015)\, by Sarah Juliet Lauro and Deconstructing Brad Pitt (2014)\, edited by Christopher Schaberg. McDonald received grants and commissions from The New York Foundation for the Arts\, The Canada Council for the Arts\, Turbulence\, and Pace University. She has attended residencies at Glenfiddich (Scotland)\, The Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito (California)\, Lilith Performance Studio in Malmö (Sweden)\, The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in New York\, and the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta (Canada). In 2017\, she participated in the Arctic Circle Residency and Expedition in Svalbard (Norway). \nFunders: Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec\, Canada Council for the Arts and the City of Gatineau \nhttps://axeneo7.com/en/manon-labrosse-jillian-mcdonald-2/

SUMMARY:A Rebellious Nature
DESCRIPTION:Artist Reception: Saturday\, November 4th\, 5-8pm. (Show Dates: November 4th to 26th)\nIn “A Rebellious Nature\,” Drew Mosley explores themes of displacement and transition. Urban sprawl and commercial development threaten and displace natural habitats. The paintings in this collection evoke the transient nature of all life and reveal what is at stake if we do not develop sustainable relationships with the natural environment and its inhabitants. Both playful and haunting\, Mosley’s scenes depict an imagined world in which characters both innocent and foreboding are depicted at crucial moments in their missions to fend off the encroachment of two-legged foes. These anthropomorphized travellers work tirelessly in the shadows to protect and preserve what is left of the beauty in our natural world—a task that is often lonely and thankless. \nBy experimenting with three-dimensional painting techniques and found or fabricated sculptural materials\, Mosley achieves a unique depth and atmosphere in his pieces. Inside wooden bowls and other thrift store finds\, multiple layers of painted resin produce deep shadows that contribute to the convincing mood of his strange world. His forest-dwelling creatures appear forever in suspense\, confronted with dangers and trials beyond our knowing. \nDrew Mosley lives and works in Ottawa where he divides his time between an exhaustive studio practice and various carpentry and woodworking projects in the Ottawa Valley. He spends his free time bushwhacking with his wife\, Izzy\, and their son\, Gray. The influence of these moments of solitude and resiliency in nature figure prominently in his paintings.
