SUMMARY:The NILS\, Steve Adamyk Band\, Dead Weights and GAS Drummers
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Sitting On The Outside & House of TARG\nDoors: 8pm / Show at 8:30pm\nCover: $10 \nThe Nils (Montreal power-pop-punk)\nMontreal’s lost rock band is back.\nAfter their critically acclaimed 1987 self titled album\, their increasing fanbase included musicians in the genre naming them as a direct influence: Goo Goo Dolls\, Superchunk\, Jawbox\, Meat Puppets\, Down By Law\, Bob Mould (Sugar\, Hüsker Dü).\n \n“The band\, led by brothers Carlos (bass/vocals) and primary songwriter Alex Soria (vocals/guitar)\, went on hiatus. SUMMARY:Forward Music Group 10 Year Revue @ NAC
DESCRIPTION:National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts + Forward Music Group presents: \n\nMichael Feuerstack\nGianna Lauren\nPaper Beat Scissors\nDan Misha Goldman\n\nPORTES / DOORS: 8pm\nBILLETS / TICKETS: $22.00 \nINFO: \nLong one of the Canadian scene’s most revered songwriters\, across almost 25 years\, working under his own name and the past alias Snailhouse\, Michael Feuerstack has built an underground canon of crooked and beautiful songs. A little Rilke and a little Bazooka Joe\, these easygoing tunes are like fields full of hedge-mazes – teeming with riddles\, reveries and hiding places.\n\nGianna Lauren is a project of atmosphere\, voice and warm voices. Lush arrangements and measured vocals create a haunting ambience. One of Canada’s most thought-provoking songwriters\, she recently released her 4th and most ambitious album to date\, Moving Parts\, an arresting collection of moody temperament and songs about human troubles.\n\nTim Crabtree’s haunting voice sits at the centre of Paper Beat Scissors’ sound with an honesty and rawness that skirts discomfort. The relocated-Brit began the project following a move to Canada’s East Coast and soon caught the attention of his adoptive home. Instrumentally\, the palettes shift from hypnotic loops through full brass arrangements and screaming lap steel to stripped-back acoustic guitar and layered vocals.\n\nToronto/LA based\, composer/producer Dan Misha Goldman has amassed a unique and varied body of work that has spanned 15 years. Most recently\, Goldman collaborated with astronaut Chris Hadfield on orchestral arrangements for a record largely recorded in orbit. Most consistently\, though\, Dan has been the other half of Snowblink\, who has released three sweetly ethereal records.\n\nForward Music Group is an Atlantic Canadian artist management team and record label that works with musicians to create sustainability through composition and performance with a strong focus on aesthetics\, presentation\, and a grassroots approach to promotion. \nThis event is part of a series of shows presented in various venues across the country celebrating Forward Music Group’s 10th anniversary.

SUMMARY:Skye Wallace\, Wooden Horsemen and Jasper Sloan Yip
DESCRIPTION:FREAKY FRIDAY OCT 13th! The Record Centre has got one heck of a lineup coming to Ottawa.\nFeatured are three up and coming acts from Vancouver and Toronto\, performing at one of Ottawa’s raddest venues. Friends and family\, don’t miss out\, this one’s gonna be fantastic! \nMUSIC AT 7PM \nSKYE WALLACE\nSkye Wallace is what happens when a classically trained singer with east coast roots discovers punk rock in their youth.\nHailed coast to coast as a “national treasure” (Sad Mag)\, Skye Wallace bases out of Toronto\, Ontario. Her newest album “Something Wicked”\, produced by Jim Bryson\, was listed as one of Vancouver Weekly’s Best Albums of 2016 and CBC’s Top 8 Albums You Need To Hear. “Something Wicked” will “burn you to the ground” (Vice/Noisey)!\n\nWOODEN HORSEMEN\nGarnering critical praise with their folk-laden debut album in 2013\, Wooden Horsemen have expanded their sound considerably since embarking on multiple cross-country tours. With the addition of horns and an expanded rhythm section\, the group now seamlessly fuses elements of raw blues\, soul\, gospel and rock. The outcome is a distinctly unique flavor of pop sensible melodies\, driven by a pulse for which the band has built it’s reputation as a must-see live set.\n\nJASPER SLOAN YIP\nJasper Sloan Yip’s start was humble. A self-taught musician\, he gave his first performance in 2007 on a stage he built in the backyard of his Vancouver home.\nFast forward to 2017\, ten years after his debut backyard performance\, as Jasper sits on his most realized collection of songs yet. Produced by John Raham (Dan Mangan\, Frazey Ford\, Dralms)\, Post Meridiem refines the elements he has become known for\, with eloquent reflections of life and loss woven through arrangements that climb from whispered confessions to soaring soundscapes.\nPost Meridiem will be released in October 2017 on Afterlife Music\, and distributed by Membran. It will be supported with tour dates around Canada as well as a return to Europe – perhaps inspiring the next chapter for this introspective troubadour.

SUMMARY:Fox Club and Cynthia Tauro
DESCRIPTION:Pressed presents a double-header of creative new music from Montreal and Ottawa! $8-10 suggested donation. \nFox Club \nAfter meeting in Montreal\, these three friends were inspired to create a group that draws from their varied interests\, including rock\, folk\, funk and jazz. Adapting the chordless trio format\, they explore creative original music and covers that make use of electronic instruments\, improvisation and feel-good grooves. \nJonny Chapman // bass\nAaron Dolman // drums \nChris Maskell // saxophone + electronics \nListen to their EP here: https://fox-club.bandcamp.com/releases\n\nCynthia Tauro \nCynthia Tauro is the youngest in a musical family\, playing the piano since the age of three. At the age of twelve\, she sang “Over the Rainbow” with none other than Bernie Senensky on piano (broadcast by York University 105.5 FM). Classically trained at first\, she began to specialize in jazz in high school\, and then branched out to Latin Jazz in university. She has recently graduated from the Jazz Performance Program at Carleton University. Cynthia continues to study piano with Mark Ferguson in Ottawa. She also continues to work with Frank Falco in Toronto\, where Robi Botos is among her earlier teachers and mentors. This past year\, Cynthia was the lead pianist in the Carleton University Jazz Band and in the summer of 2014 she was the coordinator of the Carleton University Jazz Camp. \nCynthia’s gift not only lies in accompanying herself while singing\, but also in composing. Her songs resonate with the audience\, as she lets you into the pure vulnerabilities everyone has felt. She has performed at the Jazz Bistro\, The Homesmith Bar\, 120 Diner\, Musideum\, and Habits Gastropub\, located in Toronto\, as well as venues in Ottawa such as Brookstreet Hotel\, Pressed\, The Rainbow Bistro\, and Das Lokal. She has also performed at Le Cagibi in Montreal\, as well as Club Med Punta Cana\, Dominican Republic.

SUMMARY:Joyce Crago's Flotsam Vernissage @ Exposure Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Joyce Crago | Flotsam\nVernissage: Thursday\, October 5\, 2017 from 6-8pm \nJoyce Crago is creating still-life compositions out of garbage. She has long been intrigued by garbage and what people leave behind. She is constantly finding interesting and intriguing trash. She found her best jeans on Albert Street on a snowy January day: she found her couch on the curb in Toronto. \nShe finds in photographing trash that there is the possibility of the rediscovery of order\, under circumstances that are never propitious and out of materials that are less than promising. \nShe photographed garbage from: \n-Arts organizations including the Canada Council Art Bank in Ottawa\, the Pace MacGill Gallery in NYC\, and the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin at a time when she was going to arts school (SPAO) \n-The Women’s March on Washington and the 2017 Inauguration. It is hard to overstate how devastated Joyce Crago was at 4 am on Wednesday\, November 9th\, 2016. It was more than her heart could bear. In the subsequent weeks she decided to travel to Washington\, D.C. to confront these feelings in order to understand better where we go from here. \n-Her morning walks to get coffee when she was recovering from a perforated appendix and for the first time in her life seeking to understand the country of Illness with its different language\, different citizens\, different culture\, and different Gods and Totems. \nThere are challenges with her process. For instance\, certain arts organizations refuse access to their garbage. In particular\, the Art Bank stated: \n“I love what you are doing but with reservations in regards to Art Bank garbage. Anyone reading this would assume the artworks are garbage (contemporary art is a challenge to many) and not the detritus of framing\, eating etc. please consider another opportunity.” \nIn addition\, the garbage from the Women’s March on Washington and the Inauguration needed to be photographed in the U.S. and brought across the border. \nBut these types of challenges ultimately inform and inspire her work. \nShe is constantly amazed by the intriguing stories of what we leave behind in our waste. And as someone who is always seeking to understand\, Joyce wonders what do the images of the trash she collected in DC tell us about the world and the time we live in. \nIt is interesting to think of the backstory of the DC trash: \nWho left a lifesaver on a yellow string at the Women’s March on Washington? \nWho left a Marlborough cigarette butt in a holder at the Inauguratio

In 2003\, after two years of audio performance practice in France and elsewhere\, she enrolled at the Conservatoire de Musique of the 20th arrondissement in Paris\, in the electroacoustic class of Gino Favotti and in the computer assisted composition class of Octavio Lopez. The creations of Emmanuelle Gibello are both a projections of her unconscious and a mirror for her audiences. She develops a practice that borrows from both the visual arts and electronic music. \nHazel Meyer is an interdisciplinary artist who works with installation\, performance\, and textiles to investigate the relationships between sport\, sexuality\, feminism\, and material culture. Her work aims to recover the queer aesthetics\, politics\, and bodies often effaced within histories of sports and recreation. Drawing on archival research\, she designs immersive installations that bring various troublemakers — lesbians-feminists\, gender outlaws\, leather — dykes into the performative spaces of athletics. Recent exhibitions include Tape Condition: degraded with Cait McKinney at the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives in Toronto\, a screening of Muscle Panic at neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst in Berlin and a commission to produce the installation and performance Where Once Stood a Bandstand for Cruising & Shelter for Nuit Blanche Toronto. She holds degrees from OCAD University (Toronto) and Concordia University (Montréal). \nMatt Miwa is an Ottawa-based video\, theatre and performance artist. His performance work blends elements of drag\, gymnastics\, acting and song and strives to convey subtle instances of awe. Matt last performed at AXENÉO7 as part of Theo Pelmus’ Operatic Visions of Excess in 2013. His most recent theatre piece\, co-created with Montreal’s Julie Tamiko Manning is The Tashme Project: The Living Archives. Tashme has been presented across Canada and can be seen next at Vancouver’s Firehall Theatre and Kitchener-Waterloo’s Impact Festival in 2019. \nNicolas Rivard is dedicated to interdisciplinary work that combines intervention and performance. He is influenced by political\, social and cultural events. His main centers of interest relate to new places and new forms of contemporary art as sensitive transformation engines of social space and the interactions within them. He holds a MA in art history\, is a freelance writer and is interested in different forms of political art and appropriation of citizen initiatives. \nJonathan Sitthiphonh was born in Reims in 1983. After enrolling in a scientific course at the Université des Sciences Exactes et Naturelles\, he studied design at the ESAD in Reims\, visual arts at ENSA in Bourges and architecture at the CAFA in Beijing. Since 2010\, he works in his studio in Bourges and lives in many regions of France. \n/ / / / / / / \nWednesday\, October 11 at 7PM\nPerformances — Aymara Alvarado & Raeda Saadeh \nFriday\, October 13 at 7PM\nPerformances — Hazel Meyer \nFriday\, October 20 at 7PM\nPerformances — Action Indirecte\nIn collaboration with MACL \nThursday\, October 26 at 7PM\nPerformances — Serge Olivier Fokoua & Geneviève et Matthieu\nIn collaboration with Galerie UQO
