SUMMARY:Jose Palacios - We Can Start Over Again
DESCRIPTION:Jose Palacios\nWe Can Start Over Again\nSolo Exhibition\nAlliance Française Ottawa\nMay 12 – June 23\, 2022\nOpening reception: May 12\, 2022 @ 6pm \nPerformances de DJ Magnificent et Osita \n***Jose Palacios acknowledges that this exhibition will take place on the unceded\, unsurrendered Territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation whose presence here reaches back to time immemorial.\nhttps://www.instagram.com/p/CcQeqo5FTLN/\nAlliance Française is pleased to present We Can Start Over Again\, the first solo exhibition of Ottawa-based artist Jose Palacios. This selection of paintings showcases the stylistic breadth of his intuitive\, experimental and process-based approach to visual art\, leading to unexpected interplays of colour\, line and space that invite the viewer to see anew. The exhibition opens on May 12\, 2022 at Alliance Française Ottawa with a reception attended by the artist.\nhttps://www.instagram.com/p/CcA85xhrKN8/\nInformed by his experiences as a musician and DJ\, Palacios approaches painting in a way that is similar to how ideas come together when he makes music: layering and sampling ideas\, looping phrases and repeating patterns until all the different parts reveal a finished whole. Palacios uses a variety of media – acrylic\, oil sticks\, watercolour\, and spray paint – to enrich\, layer\, and interrupt surfaces with multiple textures\, creating curious contrasts and tensions within a single work.\nhttps://www.instagram.com/p/CbQVssVlWz8/\nWhere locatedness is loosened through a playful tension of differently weighted focal points – as in Analogous\, where the fluid verticality of intentionally-placed lines contrast with heavier\, constrained blocks – the paintings seem to contain circuits of energy that follow a complex internal logic. Other works\, like In Your First House and In Praise of Melancholy\, draw upon electric and calming colour palettes to channel a spontaneous and uncontainable force driven by an intuitive impulse that leaps off the canvas. When Palacios’ works include figurative elements\, as in Death of a Party\, they tend to emerge in a dream-like way\, entangled with bursts of colour\, textures\, and layers.\nEnlivening and evocative\, the paintings in We Can Start Over Again are a delight for the eyes\, rousing curiosity and offering the possibility to look again at what and how we see.\nThey evidence a raw vibrancy at the root of Palacios’ creative momentum that continues to propel his work forward in new and exciting directions.\nhttps://www.instagram.com/p/CaIbKzUF3LC/\nJose Palacios (b. 1978\, Lima\, Peru) is a visual artist\, musician\, and DJ who works and lives in Ottawa\, Ontario. His paintings\, which include both digital works and those on canvas and paper\, have been shown in exhibitions at Galerie Annexe at the Ottawa Art Gallery\, and the Ottawa City Hall Art Gallery.\nJose Palacios acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts\, City of Ottawa and Digital Originals.

SUMMARY:Edwin Raphael @ Club Saw
DESCRIPTION:Dubai-born\, Montreal-based songwriter Edwin Raphael will be stopping by Ottawa’s Club Saw on May 12\, 2022.\n\nHow do you anchor yourself when occupying multiple geographic identities at once? For Edwin Raphael\, it requires an intentional and intensive form of world-building. By developing an unmistakable style of folk that merges Eastern scales with the Western pop canon\, Raphael reimagines his music as a exploratory tool that allows him to construct an interior and sacred home to retreat into.\n \nGrowing up in Dubai\, as the son of parents who immigrated from the city of Cochin in India’s coastal Kerala state\, Raphael studied classical guitar before deciding on the keys. As he developed an affinity for John Mayer and Ben Howard\, he felt at odds with Dubai’s distinct sense of “placelessness” — and the bewildering feeling of being immersed in a culture where everyone claimed an alternate homeland. It wasn’t until he moved to Montreal to pursue a business degree that he felt a sense of stability\, and became deeply entangled with the city’s indie bedroom pop scene. \n\nHis debut EP Ocean’s Walk (2015) paired stirring\, melancholic instrumentals with a fierce self-reckoning. It would set the stage for a string of releases that would dive deeper into the psyche; like confronting the aftershocks following a significant heartbreak\, or relearning your emotional baseline as you mature. Subsequent releases\, Cold Nights (2017)\, his acclaimed debut Will You Think of Me Later? (2019)\, and its follow up Staring at Ceilings (2021) on

SUMMARY:Joel Plaskett @ NAC Theatre
DESCRIPTION:In a world increasingly defined by disconnection under the guise of digital bonding\, Joel Plaskett is an analogue holdout\, making his most solid connections the old-fashioned way\, through the electrifying\, uplifting experience of his live shows. The warmth and care with which he works shines through on his albums\, self-produced and recorded to tape at his New Scotland Yard studio in downtown Dartmouth. But there’s no better spot than under the bright lights of the stage to catch one of Nova Scotia’s favourite sons\, shredding in reverie alongside his band\, The Emergency\, harmonizing with his dad\, Bill or spinning tales and songs on his own. \nSetting his impressive catalogue aside\, Plaskett’s legacy is in those communal experiences\, the ones that have fans old and new belting out his songs for a couple hours before they stumble wide-eyed onto the sidewalk outside the club\, buzzing with the life-affirming electricity that gets generated between the stage and the audience.
