Been awhile at Galerie St-Laurent + Hill and it was the vernissage for Tavi Weisz‘s I Can’t Seduce You, I Can Befriend You.
All I have to say that they were beautiful and colourful paintings he presented this year.
About “I Can’t Seduce You, I Can Befriend You”:
In the past year I worked at a furious pace on works that were based on drawings, sketches that I created during the first months of the pandemic. I decided to create abstract works thus deviating from the way I used to work. From those initial abstract works I merged or remerged back to my own approach towards painting. This is the body of work that forms this actual show.
I am seducing the viewer into a world of ongoing equilibrium and the interval that articulates the stream of daily events. Moments are depicted that only exist to punctuate the human drama in order to clarify our existence and to find poetic meaning in everyday life. I am interested in juxtaposing pompous and utopian constructivist designs, ideas with trivial objects.
At times, disconcerting beauty emerges. The inherent visual seductiveness, along with the conciseness of the exhibitions, further complicates the reception of their manifold layers of meaning.
Situations are placed in a lush, warm, inviting, maybe dream like environment. In these works motifs from daily life are juxtaposed with historical images, my personal images and at times political themes are mixed with the above mentioned images and my own concerns. I am taking images out of their original context, emptying them of their actual meaning and placing them in the newly created compositions.
I am creating situations in which everyday objects are altered or detached from their natural function. By applying specific combinations and certain manipulations, different functions and/or contexts are created.
The exhibition runs until August 17, 2021.
