On July 23rd, I literally took the train to Montreal and dropped what was happening in Ottawa to go to this show at Bar Le Ritz PDB.
All three acts were fronted by Asian-American female indie pop rock bands which was unheard of!
Playing at the show was Mitski, Japanese Breakfast and Jay Som.
This was the first time I have been to an Montreal all ages show that ended before 11pm!
Headlining the sold out show was New York City’s Mitski. Puberty 2 was released in June to rave reviews! It was a captivating set with the packed audience singing every words to her songs. I was really glad to see her and part of me felt she was like the Asian version of St. Vincent vocal wise.I was mostly excited to see Philadelphia’s Japanese Breakfast perform. Playing tracks from the Psychopomp, I was happy hearing In Heaven, The Woman That Loves You and Everybody Wants To Love You. There was no way I wasn’t going to miss this with the buzz the band has been getting!San Francisco songwriter Melina Duterte who goes by Jay Som started off the show. Performing a solo set of indie alternative pop music. Playing selected tracks from Turn Into and I Think You’re Alright (a 7″ out on Fat Possum Records). It was a captivating and attentive set!
