Yesterday, I attended the opening of Resistance Fibres at the Âjagemô Exhibition Space, located at 150 Elgin Street as part of the Canada Council Art Bank’s programming.

The exhibition brings together a dynamic roster of artists, including Siku Allooloo, Haley Bassett, Bob Boyer, Evelyn Coutellier, Erika DeFreitas, Frances Dorsey, Nancy Edell, General Idea, Chantal Gibson, Murray Gibson, Zoe Lambert, Joanne Lynes, Ann Newdigate, Michèle Provost, Ruth Scheuing, Carl Stewart, and Barbara Todd.

It was a pleasure to see such intricate and conceptually rich textile works take centre stage. From delicate handwork to bold, politically charged pieces, Resistance Fibres offers a powerful exploration of how textiles can be a vehicle for resistance, storytelling, and cultural expression.

Afterwards there was a special performance by the Lyon Sisters.
The exhibition runs until May 19, 2026 which is well worth a visit for anyone interested in the intersection of craft and contemporary art.
