I was curious about this band from San Francisco called Royal Baths.
So I wanted to check out their debut album Litanies on Woodsist Records.
For those wondering what Litanies means.
Litany in Christian worship and some forms of Jewish worship, is a form of prayer used in services and processions, and consisting of a number of petitions. The word comes from the Latin litania and the Greek: λιτανεία (litaneía), which in turn comes from Greek: λιτή (litê), meaning “supplication”.
The album came out in 2010 and finding it out now due to a show tonight at Zaphod Beeblebrox.
Their music is filled with intense dark garage rock/psychedelia sound with melodic styles.
Very much like Suuns without the whole prog/math rock style.
All I can say that it is a very dark album.
When I listen to the whole album I feel like I am listening to some lo-fi act or Joy Division.
Not sure how they will translate when playing live.
Anyways it’s a good album if you are feeling blue or feel inspired.
Best tracks:
- After Death
- Nikki Don’t
- Needle and Threads
- Drudgery
- Sinister Sunrise
- Pleasant Feeling
Give Lithanies 8/10.
