Today, Vancouver musician and Hey Ocean! member David Vertesi released the 15th anniversary edition of his 2010 album Cardiography.
This new version sees the record reimagined in an intimate acoustic style and is out now via Tiny Kingdom Music.
Originally released in 2010, here’s what I wrote about the album at the time:
Cardiography is an eleven-track collection of intimate and personal songs written by Vertesi.
It blends indie acoustic folk, rock, and pop—quite different from the upbeat energy he brings to Hey Ocean! His solo work leans into a more serious, reflective side.
“Gentlemen Say” feels like he’s channeling a bit of Gord Downie, while “All Night, All Night, All Night” stands out as especially personal.
“Learn to Run” carries that warm indie lo-fi folk charm, and the title track “Cardiography” brings to mind the heartfelt songwriting of Dan Mangan.
A warm and comforting album then—and now thoughtfully revisited fifteen years later.
About the acoustic album by David:
Vertesi returns to these songs with a renewed perspective. Cardiography (Acoustic) strips the material back to its emotional core, highlighting the raw honesty and timeless songwriting that have defined his work ever since. Recorded in a live, minimalist setting, and production by longtime collaborator Daniel Klenner (Peach Pit, Dear Rouge, Hey Ocean!), the new release captures the quiet intensity of Vertesi’s performances and invites listeners to hear the songs as they were first written — simple, direct, and deeply human.
“I often think about Cardiography as a heartbreak record, but upon re-recording it I realized there’s more to it than that,” says Vertesi. “It sprung from a time when I was learning how to love. The lessons can be painful, but also beautiful. ‘All Night, All Night, All Night’ paints a picture of young love. I wrote this song about sneaking out at night to go sleep over at my then girlfriend’s house and imagining my Dad waking up to discover I wasn’t home. In an album that focuses a lot on heart break, this song means even more, as it is a reminder of what we are fighting for as well as what is lost when things don’t I work out.
