On July 23, 2026, I headed to Place Laval in Gatineau (Hull) for another fantastic free summer concert, this time featuring the incredible Fulu Miziki from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
It turned out to be one of the most energetic and unforgettable performances I’ve experienced this summer.
For anyone unfamiliar with Fulu Miziki, the collective is known for its unique blend of Afrofuturism, punk, electronic music, and traditional African rhythms.
What truly sets them apart is their commitment to sustainability—every instrument, costume, and stage prop is crafted entirely from discarded and recycled materials, transforming what many would consider trash into a vibrant artistic statement.
Their performance is as much about environmental awareness as it is about making people dance.
From the moment the band took the stage, the crowd was swept up in their infectious grooves and high-energy rhythms.
It was impossible to stand still as the percussion, pulsating basslines, and captivating vocals created an atmosphere that felt both futuristic and deeply rooted in Congolese musical traditions. Their colourful costumes and theatrical stage presence only added to the experience, making every song a visual spectacle.
For a Thursday evening in Gatineau, it was the perfect way to unwind.
The free outdoor concert drew an enthusiastic audience, and before long people of all ages were dancing along to Fulu Miziki’s joyful, genre-defying sound. It was a celebration of music, creativity, and sustainability that left everyone smiling.
