Toronto’s Sun K will be playing a show tonight in Ottawa at the Bier Markt on 156 Sparks Street
I had the opportunity to do a interview with Sun K’s frontman Kristian Montano.

Is this your first time playing Ottawa?
We played TulipFest in Ottawa last May. An awesome little outdoor stage to a very welcoming audience. We’re extremely excited to come back and play BierMarkt though!

Where did the name Sun K come from?
The name Sun K is a reference to the roots of the music we play. It plays off of old artists such as Sun Ra and Son House. I used it as a moniker back when I was playing more solo folky stuff with Stuart on horns and when the band formed the name just stuck.

The album is mix of blues, rock and folk. Who were your influences?
Personally most of my writing influences come from around 1964-1972. Bigger names like Bob Dylan and Neil Young but also some of the folkier cats like Dave van Ronk, Nick Drake and Jackson C Frank. In a more modern sense we all listen to Father John Misty, Wilco and Tobias Jesso Jr.

Is there a song you love to playing live?
Cowboys + Drugs and Teaser Pt. II are probably our favourite live songs.

What are you doing after the March-April tour ends? Also you are doing a residency at Dakota Tavern. How exciting is that?
Once we come back we’ll probably give our loved ones a long hug, sleep for a week and then try to start doing it all over again. That’s the life!

The Dakota Tavern has been amazingly supportive to us. It is truly our home in Toronto. They trusted us right from the start and we’re happy to play there as long as they’ll have us. There’s such a history of great bands coming from residencies at the Dakota and going on to do amazing things – we hope to fall under that category one day.
