It wouldn’t be summer in Ottawa without the start of the 32nd edition of Ottawa Bluesfest.
Despite a rainy and muddy start to the evening, festivalgoers still turned out in large numbers for the opening night.
The RBC Main Stage leaned heavily into country music, headlined by Cody Johnson.
Also taking the stage were American country-pop singer Jessie Murph and Toronto’s Jade Hilton, who helped set the tone for the night.
Meanwhile, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Stage offered a lineup that was more to my liking.
R&B and soul artist Jermaine Holmes delivered another impressive performance, marking my second time seeing him live.
Bringing plenty of nostalgic energy were hip-hop legends Digable Planets, who had the crowd grooving throughout their set before closing with their classic hit “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat).”
Keeping the dance party going afterward was DJ Champion, whose energetic set had people moving well into the night.
Over at the LeBreton Stage, country musician Justin Fancy opened the festivities, but one of the biggest highlights of the evening for me was Swedish psychedelic rock collective GOAT.
Their mesmerizing blend of heavy grooves, world music influences, and theatrical stage presence made for one of the most captivating performances of the festival’s first day.
I also caught Ottawa’s Satellite Birdhouse at the Barney Danson Theatre, showcasing some excellent local talent as part of the diverse opening-night lineup.
Overall, it was a solid first night for Ottawa Bluesfest.
Between the muddy conditions, strong performances across multiple stages, and a surprise fireworks display at the end of the evening, the festival got off to an entertaining start.
Judging by the reaction online, those unexpected fireworks will likely have Ottawa residents talking—and perhaps complaining—for days to come.
