This is my third year attending the Polaris Music Prize 2018 Gala.
Congratulations to Jeremy Dutcher on winning this year’s prize for his album Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa.
Here is what went down this year.
Weaves was the first band to perform.
Playing the songs Law and Panda and Wide Open.
Absolute wonderful performance considering they were the first act to go on. 9/10.
Jean-Michel Blais was seconding performing and played the songs Dans ma main from the album of the same and Hypocrite from 2017 Cascade EP with CFCF.
I literally jaw-dropped when he played Hypocrite since it was the first time hearing it live.
Man! His music had that beautiful and magical vibe to it! 10/10.
Third was Hubert Lenoir and he performed Fille de Personne I, II and III.
That was some spectuclar performance.
Hubert literally crashed and stood on a table during the performance. 10/10.
Deep Vvaters is a band from Toronto’s Girls Rock Camp and they performed Alvvays’ In Undertow.
The band couldn’t make it since they were touring.
It was totally adorable seeing that performance. 8/10.
Snotty Nose Rez Kids bought down the house with their hip-hop music!
First time seeing them and it was definitely a performance. 9/10.
U.S. Girls literally had the best performance of the night.
No backing back but 12 piece group doing acapella to Poem and Pearly Gates.
On the veins from 2016 performance where she was acapella with the song Sororal Feelings.
Nice seeing Alanna of Bonjay and Basia Bulat doing the back-up singing! 10/10.
Jeremy Dutcher bought down the house with his four song medley from the album winning Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa.
So powerful and moving, you had to pause for yourself on hearing those songs.
Second last act was Pierre Kwenders who put on a captivating set with the songs Zonga, Welele and Sexus Plexus Nexus/Tuba Tuba/Enjaillement his album Makanda at the End of Space, the Beginning of Time. 8/10.
Ending the night was no other than Partner.
Rocking it out to Creature in the Sun and Big Gay Hands.
Great way to end the performances to something loud rock.
Revealing the winner for the 2018 edition of Polaris.
Overall night of the gala – 8/10.
