I started my Saturday checking out Pop Montreal‘s Puces Pop and later went to Pop vs Jock.
Here is a info about Pop vs Jocks.
POP vs JOCK was Pop Montreal’s charity basketball game organized by Win Butler of Arcade Fire and Dexter John of DJ Sports Club. Team Pop, was made up of Arcade Fire’s Win and Will Butler, Chris Tomson of Vampire Weekend, Miracle Fortress and current and former NBA players Matt Bonner and Paul Shirley, while Team Jock was stacked with members of the McGill Redman and Concordia Stingers. Team Pop ended up pulling out the win 106-100 over Team Jock.
The only complaint I had was the gym was very humid.
I would have thought that a gym would have air conditioning.
Anyways it was a unique take on a basketball game.
Just to clarify I understand this whole event was for charity and I have nothing against it.
Kid Koala and Regine did the entertaining with the music.
The Butler brothers during the half-time tried to do some singing.
Somehow turned into a trainwreck singing a Christmas/National anthem song.
Here is a Youtube clip that I found.
While Matt Bonner and Paul Shirley did their rendition of Little Tea Cup.
The half time show was Richard Reed Perry’s debut of his Drones/Revelations show.
It is a “site specific 20 minute multichannel composition for voice, woodwind, strings and synthesizer” insprired by the use of unmaned drones and the book of revelations. The room darkened and all sorts of light-and stereo-mounted bikes circled the court, broadcasting an atmospheric soundscap of sorts. In short: it was probably the most abstract avant-guard sports half-time show of all time and a clear reminder that this was still very much a Pop Montreal event.
At first it was cool to watch it for the first five minutes.
But with the humidity and the dark, it got somewhat tedious and weird with them bikes circling around the gym.
Not to diss it. The music was fine it just that I wasn’t in the right mood for it and exhausted from the festival.
I heard someone from behind saying how weird it was seeing this.
Alot of people had a great time cheering for the POP side.
Glad that POP won the game.
Hopefully they will have it next year.
I was lucky to get this signed!
Here are some photos that I got to sneak in.
