Yesterday, I visited the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to preview Richard Avedon: Immortal Portraits of Aging, 1951–2004 ahead of its public opening today.
Back in 2023, I visited The Met in New York and was in awe of Avedon’s MURALS.
So when I heard the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts would be presenting Immortal, I knew I had to check it out—especially during the members’ preview.
While the portraits aren’t presented on the same monumental scale as MURALS, the exhibition still impresses with its striking images and offers an intimate opportunity to experience Avedon’s work up close.
It’s definitely worth seeing.
The exhibition runs until August 9, 2026.
About the exhibition:
Featuring close to 100 portraits of public figures like Chet Baker, Samuel Beckett, Toni Morrison, Truman Capote, Duke Ellington, Patti Smith and Jean Renoir, Immortal is dedicated to one of the 20th century’s most celebrated photographers, focusing on a fascinating and unexpected dimension of his work: aging.
