Braids, Trees and Long Long Long @ Mavericks

It was a mix of experimental rock and pop bands playing Mavericks on January 21, 2011.
The bands playing were:

The show was also the album release for Braids’ long-awaited debut, Native Speaker.
First up was Halifax’s Long Long Long.
They wore matching black shirts (minus the drummer wearing a white t-shirt over his black shirt).
They had that Halifax indie/garage rock sound similar to other bands like Cousins and Play Guitar.
It was fun rocking set and just blew me away.

Second was Ottawa’s Tress.
Finally, my first time seeing them live.
Their set was wild and radical with lead singer Jonathan Matthews showing energetic stage presence and singing.
The audience seemed to enjoy their set.

Finally it was time for Braids.
I was very excited to see them live for their album release.
Also a big surprise was the large crowd, since at their last local show, they played to ten people this past summer.
Of course, again there were technical difficulties with some of their equipment, but a slow changeoever the band got the show started.
Started off with Glass Deer, which was just great.
The only downside to the set was the audience was kind of chatty and some were expecting a dance party (it being a Friday night and all).
It didn’t seem to deter Braids one bit.
When they sang Lemonade, I was happy to hear it.
The whole set was fun and hypnotic.
I was impressed with the new song at the end.

Overall despite the rowdy crowd, this was one of the best shows I’ve attended.

Go get NATIVE SPEAKER!
