Last week, as I do every year in late August, I traveled to Rouyn-Noranda in Quebec for the 22nd edition of FME (Festival De Musique Émergente). This year, my journey went smoothly, and I arrived in town without any issues. Since my French isn’t great, I kept my interactions with the locals to a minimum.
However, I was particularly excited for the first day, especially to see the NYC band Bodega, and there were some other pleasant surprises as well.
The first night of FME 2024 kicked off with electrifying performances.
Headlining the main stage was Karkwa, delivering a powerful rock set.
Their rendition of “Oublie Pas” in an electric-rock version was a standout moment, especially since this marks the last time we’ll see them live before they disband—again after the album cycle of Dans le Seconde ends.
BODEGA was the act I was most eager to see, and they didn’t disappoint.
Their blend of rock and post-punk, especially tracks from their 2024 album Our Brand Could Be Yr Life, was nothing short of amazing.

Montreal’s Hawa B opened the main stage with an energetic mix of indie electro-R&B and jazz and rock, setting the tone for the evening.
One of the night’s first secret shows took place at the Morasse parking lot, featuring the Brussels band Ada Oda.
Their high-energy rock set, with the lead singer delivering vocals in Italian, was a delightful surprise.
The late-night set by NOBRO was a must-see, particularly as their album Set Your Pussy Free is shortlisted this year.
Their performance was liberating and packed with high-octane energy.
A surprising highlight for me was the Brooklyn rock and post-punk band TVOD, who delivered a set that truly caught me off guard with its intensity and raw power.
