Jenn Nucum – Monuments [Listen]

Filipina-Canadian singer-songwriter based in Toronto named Jenn Nucum dropped a new track called Monuments.
It has been years since Jenn released something new.
A slow burning indie alternative rock tune.

About the track:
“Monuments” was inspired by my childhood experiences that continue to echo and affect my life to this day as a diasporic Filipinx person. The opening verse is a first-person narration of recollecting how my legal first name was often mispronounced or misspelled—and ultimately anglicized and shortened. This song is about surviving in western society as a racialized person while resisting assimilation, cultural erasure, and navigating colonial and oppressive systems.

“Monuments” offers a safe space, empowerment, and validation to racialized listeners who share similar experiences. It is an anthem for those who are on a journey of self-actualization or are starting to rethink structures and norms put in place by those who have assumed power and privilege over others.

An emotional time bomb, the song starts off like a lullaby and gradually builds to a cathartic crescendo – an explosive battle cry of the oppressed to the oppressors. I was also inspired by acts of protest across Canada, where people took down statues and memorials of figures who were directly involved in the existence of residential “schools.” The title is a tribute to these important events, which were part of similar movements around the world protesting colonial abuse and the damaging perpetuation of colonial practices.
