On Monday night, I made the trip to Toronto to catch Matt Berninger and RonBoy at the historic Concert Hall on Yonge Street.
This stop marked the only Canadian date on Berninger’s Get Sunk tour, and the show more than delivered.
Berninger, best known as the frontman of The National, performed a compelling solo set that drew heavily from his latest album Get Sunk, alongside selections from his 2020 debut Serpentine Prison.
While I may have missed my chance to see The National in an intimate setting, this solo performance felt like the next best thing.
Berninger seemed loose, energized, and clearly at ease performing his own material—less confined, more playful.
A personal highlight was “Bonnets of Pins,” the standout track from Get Sunk, which I was eagerly waiting to hear live—and it didn’t disappoint.
The encore brought a special surprise: Toronto’s own Hayden joined Berninger on stage for a heartfelt rendition of “Take Me Out of Town” and a cover of Tom Petty’s “Only a Broken Heart,” dedicated to Petty. It was a tender and unexpected moment that added to the evening’s charm.
Opening the night was RonBoy, who set the tone with a set of moody, indie alternative rock that fit well with the headliner’s introspective vibe.
