VOTE FOR THIS YEAR’S POLL
From the first annual poll.
Remember the site iheartmusic.net?
At the end of every year they compiled a list to see who was the hottest act of the year and/or made the biggest waves in the Canadian music scene. Since the site is no more, I wanted to revive the annual poll along with Briggins from www.thebrokenspeaker.com (Who apparently backed out and had to do this on my own :P)
So here is how it works:
Bloggers/Radio personalities/writers/etc send in their Top 10 acts of 2012, in order with 1 being the hottest and 10 being the lowest temperature wise.
For the point scheme, whoever you picked as #1 they will get 10 points, #2 gets 9 points, etc.
Here are the results:
- Dan Mangan (25 points)
- Purity Ring (24 points)
- TIED – Japandroids/Metz (21 points)

Francois of apt613 – Across the pond and back. he’s popular everywhere!
Francois of apt613 on Metz – Will they win next Polaris? Probably not, cause it’s too obvious…for now.
Ryan Breese on Metz – This is the buzz band right now. I can’t remember the last time I saw so many music critics salivating over a band. And you know what? They have pretty good reason to. After years of honing their live show, they finally released an album on Sub Pop. It’s 30 minutes of ferocious power with just enough hooks to soothe the ears. Check it.
Ryan Breese on Japandroids – They released a straight-up great rock album. Even that weird dude from The Office was on board with Japandroids. If that wasn’t enough, Spin Magazine named them Band of the Year!
Brenda Lee on Feist – “She released a highly anticipated fourth album, which becomes acclaimed internationally, partners
with Mastadon, wins the Polaris Music Prize, and everyone goes, “oh, that makes sense.”
Ryan Breese on Kathleen Edwards – “She released the best album of 2012. Hands down. Writing a break-up album is nothing special. Writing one that still makes the hairs on my arms stand up after more than 100 listens is incredible. She worked with indie rock darling Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), toured the world and stirred my soul with songs like this one.”
Music Notes on Feist – “Winning the year’s Polaris Prize with Metals, 2012 was a fairly quiet year for Feist otherwise. Although, have you heard the 7” split EP she did with heavy metal giants Mastodon? Very interesting stuff!”
Brenda Lee – “Grimes burst into collective public consciousness seemingly all of a sudden, garners crazy blog
buzz, becomes known for absurd, eye catching, and visually contradictory music videos and live performances, releases line of pussy rings, wins the Polaris Prize gala by having a male pole dancer
perform alongside her”
Music Notes – Another Canadian mainstay, the godfather of grunge made some moves on the Canadian music scene by reuniting with his old friends in backing band Crazy Horse to release two albums this year. Americana was released in June, featuring the group’s interpretations on traditional American folk tunes, while Psychedelic Pill sees a return to the band’s sound usually associated with seminal works of theirs from eras past. Currently on tour with Crazy Horse, Young has once again shown that old age is not slowing him down (Psychedelic Pill is his 35th studio album). Long may you run, Neil.
Brenda Lee – those who “get” them are enthralled, challenged, and slightly
frightened. Those who don’t think they’re pretentious bullshit. Either way, everyone has an opinion.
Brockpapers – Half Moon Run is slated to become Canada’s “next big band.” They haven’t won me over completely yet, but they sure warmed up a cold crowd in an outdoor tent in Reykjavik, Iceland for Iceland Airwaves this fall.
