When I heard that Pick a Piper was going to finally drop their long awaited debut album on April 2nd through Mint Records.
I just had to listen to it!
If you aren’t familiar with Pick a Piper.
It is a collaborative project by Caribou drummer Brad Weber with Angus Fraser and Dan Roberts.
2009 was the first time I saw them play live when I went to Toronto.
Finally 2013 could be the year for them if you are inkling for something Caribou-related.
The album is 8 tracks of pure atmospheric psychedelic-pop and electro-dance music.
I will feel bad saying this, but it sort of reminds me of a Caribou album. (Just because Brad plays in that band :P)
But this is very different and it’s more of a intense dance-vibe.
There is alot of special guest in this album like Ryan McPhun of The Ruby Suns, Raph of Braids/Blue Hawaii on Once Were Leaves and many more.
The album begins with Lucid in Fjords which is a intense polyrhythmic percussion with a hypnotizing beat and vocals.
Once Were Leaves is my favorite not just because Raph sings in it. Just has that great fast intense paced rhythmic dance feel to it.
South to Polynesia is a summer-like infused saxophone and pounding on the drums epic dance track.
While Dinghy in a Quiet Cove ends it off with a fast paced trancey dance vibe.
Best tracks:
- Lucid in Fjords (feat. Ryan McPhun of The Ruby Suns)
- All Her Colours (feat. John Schmersal of Brainiac)
- Cinders and Dust
- Once Were Leaves
- South to Polynesia
- Hour Hands
- Dinghy in a Quiet Cove
Overall I totally enjoyed this album!!
Gets your feet moving and dancing!
I’d give this album 9/10.
RIYL: Caribou, The Ruby Suns and Daphini
Don’t forget that Pick a Piper will be playing Ottawa on April 7th at Pressed! Details on here.
