Topique 2026

Before Debaser’s 20th edition of Pique goes into full swing today, the festival got an early start yesterday with Topique, their discussion forum bringing together musicians, artists, and industry voices for conversations on the realities of creating art in today’s world.

I only managed to catch two of the talks, but both were insightful and engaging in very different ways.
“Touring Across Borders: Artist Mobility in the Current Geopolitical Climate” featured speakers Bells Larsen, Justin Sweeting, Mira Silvers, MNSA, and Rana Ghose. The discussion explored the growing challenges artists face when touring internationally, from visa complications and rising travel costs to the uncertainty created by the current geopolitical climate. It was an honest and informative conversation that highlighted how difficult it has become for independent artists to move across borders while still trying to sustain their careers.

The second talk, “Sonic Resistance,” with Charlotte Qamaniq and Eekwol, was equally compelling. Both artists spoke about music as a form of cultural expression, resilience, and resistance, sharing personal experiences and perspectives rooted in Indigenous identity and community. The conversation carried a strong sense of purpose while also celebrating the power of storytelling and sound.

Even with only attending two sessions, Topique offered a thoughtful and meaningful start to this year’s Pique festivities.
