Finally, I got a chance to listen to the long-awaited album The Party by Andy Shauf.
Andy Shauf’s previous album, The Bearer of Bad News, originally came out in 2012, but it wasn’t until 2015 that the album received a reissue and began reaching a much wider audience. Since then, Shauf’s unique brand of singer-songwriter folk-pop has continued to grow in popularity.
The Party features 10 lovely tracks and feels like a departure from some of his earlier folk-pop material.
Here, Shauf leans further into catchy melodies, luscious piano, drums and beautiful string arrangements, creating a rich and inviting indie pop sound.
While Shauf has stated that The Party isn’t a concept album, it certainly feels like one.
There is a unique sense of narration throughout the record, almost as if you’ve been transported into a party and are slowly meeting the different characters and observing their stories unfold.
Depending on your perspective, it could be the best or worst party of your life.
There is also something nostalgic about The Party.
At times, the arrangements and melodies feel like being transported back to the 1960s, when pop music could be innocent, pure and simply fun.
Shauf takes that vintage sensibility and blends it with his own intimate songwriting, creating something that feels both timeless and distinctly his own.
The upbeat tracks “Twist Your Ankle,” “To You” and “Eyes of Them All” bring some extra energy to the album, while songs like “The Magician” and “Early to the Party” showcase Shauf’s ability to build detailed stories through understated instrumentation and clever songwriting.
I was especially happy to see The Party end with “Martha Sways,” a song Shauf has been performing since 2013.
This version feels much more orchestral than the earlier stripped-down performances, where it was largely just Shauf and his guitar. The expanded arrangement gives the song an added emotional weight while preserving its isolated sense of sadness.
Overall, The Party is a beautiful and meticulously arranged record that showcases Andy Shauf’s evolution as a songwriter. It moves beyond straightforward folk-pop and creates a lush world filled with memorable characters, catchy melodies and bittersweet stories.
Definitely one of my favourite records to listen to heading into the summer!
