Daniel, Fred and Julie [Streaming]

I recently stumbled upon the self-titled debut album by Daniel, Fred and Julie, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it features the talents of Julie Doiron, Daniel Romano (of Attack In Black), and Fred Squire (formerly of Shotgun and Jaybird). Each of these artists is a remarkable musician in their own right, and together they create a compelling acoustic folk rock sound with hints of bluegrass.

The album opens with tracks like “No One Knew My Name” and “Johnny Sands,” where the bluegrass influence is particularly evident. Another standout track is “Hallelujah, I’m a Bum,” which is both fun and endearing. It even sounds like Julie’s child might have contributed some vocals to this song, adding an extra layer of charm. “Clementine” is another highlight, offering a lullaby-like, folksy melody that soothes and delights.

Daniel, Fred and Julie come across as the Canadian answer to Peter, Paul and Mary, bringing a fresh yet nostalgic vibe to the genre for new generations of music lovers. The entire album is a testament to their superb songwriting and storytelling abilities, touching on themes of country life, love, and loss.

The chemistry between the trio is palpable throughout the album, making it a must-listen for anyone who appreciates 1960s acoustic folk rock. The collaboration between Doiron, Romano, and Squire is dynamic and harmonious, resulting in a project that feels both timeless and contemporary.
