While in Vancouver for a vacation, one place I absolutely had to visit was the Chinese Canadian Museum and its featured exhibition, Dream Factory: Cantopop Mandopop 1980s-2000.
The exhibition celebrates the golden era of Cantopop and Mandopop — the iconic sounds that dominated Asia and helped spark a global pop culture movement throughout the 1980s to 2000s.
Walking through the exhibit brought a huge wave of nostalgia. A lot of the music and imagery instantly reminded me of childhood memories, especially hearing these songs while my mom watched old TVB dramas and VHS tapes at home.
Seeing original performance costumes and memorabilia from legends like Anita Mui, Leslie Cheung, Teresa Teng, and many more was genuinely incredible. The exhibition does a fantastic job capturing the influence, style, and emotional connection this era of music still holds for so many people.
If you’re in the city, the exhibition runs until August 23, 2026.
