The music video for “Genesis” by Montreal’s Grimes has finally dropped.
Take a look—it’s undeniably strange. I love the song, but the video itself is a bit too bizarre for my taste. Maybe that’s why I still prefer “Oblivion”, with its unmistakable Montreal feel, back before Grimes fully exploded onto the global stage.
The big news this week is Grimes signing to 4AD, a move that came as a surprise to many longtime fans. Still, it’s hard to argue against it—2012 is shaping up to be a massive year for her.
“Genesis” is the second single from her upcoming album Visions, which drops on February 21st in the U.S. via 4AD (the day after my birthday) and in Canada through Arbutus Records.
I first heard “Genesis” live at Mission Santa Cruz during Pop Montreal 2011, as part of the Arbutus Records showcase. When she played it that night, I couldn’t stop dancing—those dreamy, dance-pop beats were completely infectious.
