Jagged Little Pill Turns 20!

JaggedLittlePill-20
Time flies by so fast when you find out that Alanis Morissette‘s Jagged Little Pill turns 20 years old.
I was 15 years old when that album came out.
So I am not going to analyze the album to death but more like going down memory lane and song value.
Still never been to her concerts and if I ever met her in person I would be speechless.

When I first heard You Oughta Know on the radio, I was like wow Alanis sure went rock!
Prior to that she had two pop albums which Now Is The Time and Alanis, I was more into the syrupy poppy ballads/dance stuff with songs like No Apologies and the guilty pleasure Too Hot.

(You probably want to cringe listening to that song)

It was no secret in Ottawa that she wasn’t well liked.
Even mentioning it in high school, kids were like “Yuck! Alanis!”
I really didn’t care at all what they said, as long the music was interesting.
At that time I didn’t know or was aware about feminism, I just listened to the album as great songs to listen to.
Did Jagged Little Pill changed people’s mind about her? (Probably 50%)

You Oughta Know started it all with a tale of a lover scorned and leashing that anger by slapping the guy in the face.
But it was the curiosity of who dumped Alanis. My guess is still Dave Coulier.

Ironic, in my opinion is still my favorite on the album and has the best music video.
While not as angry as the other track, just listening/singing to the lyrics can be “ironic”.

Head Over Feet which was fifth single released which probably everyone owned the album, I prefer the European version of the music video.

After 20 years, Alanis paved the way for other female musicians like Adele and Taylor Swift when writing about getting dumped.
Has it hold the test of time? It is your interpretation on what is considered a classic.
While Jagged Little Pill is not just an angry album being dumped.
It is more a soul-searching, accepting yourself and empowerment kind of album.
There won’t be like any other album that Alanis can record again, unless she gets dumped again.
