Recently the Toronto-based band Jo Passed released the album Away via Youth Riot Records.
Away is a moody, guitar-driven alt-rock record that leans into atmosphere as much as melody.
The album feels restless and introspective, pairing fuzzed-out guitars with moments of restraint that let the songs breathe.
There’s a late-night heaviness running through the record, but it never feels weighed down—each track builds with intention, creating a cohesive and immersive listen.
About the album by Jo:
Centered around Hirabayashi’s mental health journey and recovery in between releases, the songs of Away range from existential to deeply personal. Though the album heavily plays on themes of ego death, death itself, and general loss, it’s all done with a lighthearted touch and explored via a knotty, dynamic sound, showcasing his band at their creative best.
