Today, Fredericton’s noise rock trio Motherhood released their album, Thunder Perfect Mind via Forward Music Group.
An exhilarating art-rock surfy punk album with a twist of a sci-fi conceptual vibe.
About the album by Motherhood:
Thunder Perfect Mind is a divinity-defying deep-dive of forced perspective, a “Dark, Expanding Cloud”, with some light time travel.
It is Motherhood’s most focused and cohesive album to date.
“Despite it being a concept album that’s basically a sci-fi novel, I’m pretty sure it’s the most approachable album we’ve ever made,” bassist and keyboardist Penny Stevens laughs. “I’m really proud of where we’ve gotten to as songwriters.”
Told as much through its clever wordplay as through the spirited instrumentation, Thunder Perfect Mind draws on inspirations as vast as mystic Gnosticism, Ennio Morricone, Bad Brains and Kurt Vonnegut.
The record narrates the protagonist’s sudden abduction by an ever-growing otherworldly force – “The Cloud”. The first single, “Bok Globule”, reminiscent of scrappy Pixies, describes their efforts to escape, while “Wandering” is a plea to the cloud, after centuries of walking around. “Grow High” is about worshipping the Cloud that is enveloping the entire sky and, appropriately enough, the accompanying video was shot on the day of the total solar eclipse in the band’s hometown of Fredericton, New Brunswick. The punishingly heavy “Dry Heave” sees the protagonist getting yeeted by a storm on a river, and now with the final instalment, “Sunk”, a way out has been revealed for them after millions of years alone and it’s time to leave. Left foot in the mist.
Thunder Perfect Mind is a high-octane ripper that weaves surf, garage and punk into an unlikely sci-fi fever dream, with a sound that is undeniably and otherwise inexplicably Motherhood.
