Pop Montreal 2012 – Yamantaka // Sonic Titan @ Théâtre Rialto [September 21, 2012]

After seeing the spectacular show by David Byrne and St. Vincent during Pop Montreal.
I cab up to Théâtre Rialto for Yamantaka // Sonic Titan‘s rock opera.
The rock opera was called Opera 33/渦.
I didn’t do any research for this, I just wanted to see how the band pulls off this ambitious project.
Basically there was two acts in this opera.

I got there in time before it started.
Arrived when Alaska who is the drummer warned the audience about the flashing lights and didn’t want people to get seizures.
The first act of the opera was 33.
All I have to say it was out there.
Had that modern new wave look with the theatrical feel about murder and power.
At that time I didn’t do my research about what the opera was about.
I was like “Where is the lead singer?” until I forgot that it is a opera.
It was an entertaining and captivating opera.
Wasn’t until it ended, I asked my friend and she told me that 33 was the length of the opera and there was a second act.

Act two was called 渦 (UZU, in English means Whirlpool)
It was basically the band performing!
They previewed alot of new material on a upcoming album.
That was the first time I heard the song Atalanta///Whale Song.
Act two in my opinion was the best part of the opera.

I hope the band will tour with the opera.
It might be too out for audience but at least it is something different.
Here are some of the photos I took.
