Ottawa’s supergroup, The Retrospects.
The band comprises members from an impressive array of local acts, including New Calling, The White Wires, Bonnie Doon, Sleep Late, Warp Lines, Million Dollar Marxists, and The Giorgioz, to name just a few.
The band quietly dropped their second album, Vaporwaves — a stellar collection steeped in nostalgic ’80s-inspired new wave and synth-driven electro-pop.
Shimmering melodies, pulsating rhythms, and lush production make Vaporwaves a standout release that captures the spirit of retro futurism while keeping one foot firmly in the present.
About the album by the Retrospects:
“Very similar approach to the first album.
Using 12 synths and drum machines to lay down the bed tracks.
A couple new synths on this one too.
Namely the 2 Oberheims. Next we overdubbed vocals.
On this record we also did some takes with a polyphonic vocoder synth to bring some robot sounds into the mix.
The guitars were recorded in the bell tower, where Mike strategically placed microphones in tight on the amp and also up higher to catch the resonance of the stone tower.
Probably my favourite guitar sound I’ve ever had.
Overall the songs are happy and positive with some reflection and some optimism.
Songs of perseverance, and songs of the pursuit of excellence in all endeavours.
This band is intended for the stage.
Big parties, big times.”
