For Thanksgiving Sunday, I decided to attend a Debaser Presents show featuring the legendary Japanese musician Phew at Club SAW. What unfolded was an unforgettable journey through experimental soundscapes that defied categorization.
Phew’s set was a sonic exploration that blended no-wavey synth hymns, shoegaze-laced atmospherics, and industrial undertones.
The eerie incandescent drones that filled the room created an unsettling yet captivating atmosphere, while her vocals seamlessly floated between ghostly chants and ballady J-pop moments.
The performance was both haunting and hypnotic, evoking a sense of disconnection from time and space, as if the music transported the audience to a world all its own.
It was unlike anything else—experimental, atmospheric, and emotionally charged—a perfect fit for Club SAW’s intimate space.
Opening up the show was SUBR صبر with some atmospheric and political visuals of Palestinian traditional sounds and field recordings.
Lamb Fatale provided some music during between the sets.
