Steven McKay for those that don’t know plays drums on Bruce Peninsula.
Lately in 2010, he has ventured off going solo.
Hence his first debut album simply titled Steven McKay.
Its eight tracks of (as Fuzzy Logics Recordings/Musebox says) warm 60/70’s air filled with Ouuu’s, Ahhhh’s and even FaLaLa’s.
Touching on ideas of:
- Urban decay (Restore Me)
- Home sickness
- Canadian landscape (Of All The Places)
- Old friends (Andy’s House)
The songs utilize rich percussion, smart lyrics, accompanied by gorgeous vocal harmonies and embellished by cheeky chimes and fun vintage synthesizer flairs.
Listening to the album, there is a mix of indie folk pop and some synth-like pop sounds.
The beginning track Emma Comes Home has that medieval feel like a party is happening in a forest.
Then goes somewhat indie folky-country in Restore Me.
The song Andy’s House is a poppy track about going to a friend’s house playing videogames, watching movies and swimming in a pool.
The song Of All The Places has that 1960s rock feel about Canada. *more like a Coca-Cola ad if it was sung in a Canadian point of view*.
Fast Forward is a nice intimate folky track.
While Dance ‘Til The End Of Time totally reminds me a Leonard Cohen’s Dance Me To The End Of Time and First We Take Manhattan.
Overall totally was surprised with Steven’s work as a solo musician.
Somehow I can see promise in the coming months or years.
You should definitely check out this album.
