Thus Owls – Black Matter [EP Review]

Thus Owls is a Montreal based couple band consisting of Erika and Simon Angell.
I happened to catch them live at Pop Montreal back in 2003 and interviewed them on my radio show.
On November 6, 2015 they will release their EP called Black Matter.
Six tracks of indie experimental rock music with some tracks ranging around 5 minutes.
Here is a info about the EP.
Black Matter steps off the path to examine their core from a new vantage point by engaging new sounds, new collaborations and new artistic relationships. Recorded at home and in friends’ spaces, and ultimately tied together with one new collaborator, Pierre Girard at Planet Studios, the EP format allowed them to start fresh and go deep: “…to focus on something smaller with any kind of detail and perfection you like…” says Thus Owls’s Erika Angell.

The EP is very unique with its lyrics and music.
Ranging to haunting epic on Asleep In The Water to Portishead influences on Black Matter and mellow with it’s layer of sounds on Shields
Then the EP ends with an emotional orchestral-rock We Leave / We Forget.
I feel it is a dark and heavy EP to experience while listening.
I’d give Black Matter 8/10.
RIYL: Patrick Watson, Feist and Portishead.
