Although I couldn’t make it to Pop Montreal this year, this show at the NAC Fourth Stage felt like the next best thing, especially with Secret City Records as a key presence.
The intimate setting provided an ideal atmosphere for the lineup, featuring Fernie, Emilie Kahn, and Unessential Oils.
Each artist brought something distinct to the stage, creating a showcase that felt both personal and profound.
Kicking off the show was Unessential Oils which is the project of Plants and Animal’s Warren Spicer.
While missing a drummer, their set spacey experimental jazz rock set.
I think there was one Plants and Animals song included.
Emilie Kahn followed with her signature ethereal sound, blending folk and dream-pop influences.
Her harp added a timeless element to the night, creating lush soundscapes that filled the space with both grace and emotional depth.
Kahn’s ability to layer introspection into each note made her performance one of the night’s most compelling.
Fernie set the tone with a raw, heartfelt performance, pulling the audience into his world with his earnest delivery and carefully crafted melodies.
One being the song Pain which Patrick Watson collaborated on.
Overall a great set.
